I thought that this was going to be a project car for Noah. Next, before you know it, Mr Magic is working his mojo on it. I do predict a project for Noah is just over the horizon.
Unbelievable Jonathan. That thing runs great. Good luck with your search. If you find something in northern California let me know I'll ship it to you.
She sound real good for being ninety years old. Especially for the weekend's worth of time(all told, I figure, since you brought her home) that you put in her. "Let it set for 38 years and it starts right up. Let me have it for a few days and I'll make it where it won't run..." Sure, that'll be the day. Remember how long you worked to get that big mower tractor to start?
Yep 8.50 well spent is right. Always good to see it keep running. Now you really know how good that engine is as well after tearing the engine down and putting it back together. Sounds great
Oh that runs GOOD! Sweet little motor. I really like the whippet its a good looking old car. Yeah that pully on the water pump fan is disturbing might break and the fan tears into the radiator.
hey jonathan i give you big props for preserving these truly old cars. and just as good you have sparked the interest of the next generation in noah. keep up the great videos please
Sounds good and it didn't shake the gas tank off the cowl this time. I live about an hour from Brownsville and would be happy to pick up the parts and send them your way. Wouldn't take too much to get me to drive them down since I have family in Fayetteville that I haven't seen in way too long. Good job on the Whippet and let me know if I can help....
Jonathan great job getting her back together. You’re right it would be nice too source some cloth wiring. How cool it would be if you could get that heater to work also, maybe come the fall you will have found a wheel for it and get her button up proper like. She’s a keeper for sure. Hope you had a good Father’s Day take care
You should check out Engles Coach shop.ru-vid.com/show-UCMgTlht-PsNniRIuaax4m8QHe specializes in repairing old coach work including full restoration of wood wheels.
Just stumbled across your channel, wanted to comment, hey you don't need to apologise , your DOING a great job, really like your content and enjoyed these wippet videos !!
Great video Jonathan i have really enjoyed this one and is great to see you back doing what you do best. Noah is such a lucky lad to have you as a mentor although he looks to be doing just fine on his own. You always make things look so easy i wish i had just 10% of your knowledge to be able to do what you do. Send my regards to the family and i hope everyone is ok. cheers Shayne
Looks and sounding good Jonathan, I think i speak for everyone when i say we would like to see the old girl fixed up, you could make a trailer and when you take your Elcar to a show take the Whippet on the trailer. Wish you the best of luck finding a Whippet front wheel a sensible price.
An old friend of mine had one same year in upstate NY took me and wife for a ride on a dirt road over an even older single lane bridge on buttermilk falls rd. at night it was nostalgic rest in peace our butch
She sure does start quick! The first start was quick and then after you got the wires right she didn’t even hesitate! Nice work Jonathan and Noah! Hope the guy comes trough for you on the wheel(s). Happy Fathers Day!
Gotta love that engine that would start that dang smooth. Loved your insult to one's self; give it to me and it will never run again... so untrue my friend as you have started engines I would of given up on... Stop beating yourself up as you are priceless in a world of want a be's. I would hold your back in any fight as to who is one of the best I've seen in a bit. Miles a head of my best day and I only thought I was pretty good. You've forgot more than most ever learn
I'm amazed how you made your own shims for the crank, and modified a different lifter to work engine sounds great, hope you find a rim for the front so you can do your first drive in the 1929 whippet, great video jonathan.
That sounds great , I'm fairly new to your channel , I like it and think it's great that you were able to get it running without having to fully rebuild it
I wonder if, many many years ago it was put off the road because it was only running on 3 cylinders? The rings and valves seem to be in great condition .Cotton braided wire is still available and you might even find that Whippet owners know someone who can make a proper cotton sheathed loom.
I recall reading a story in Hemmings Classic Car about a gentleman in eastern Massachusetts who specializes in these wheels. Perhaps you can get some information from others. A starting engine = a good repair job.
I bought one of these Whippets when I was about 20, that is 45 years ago! My younger brother Tom still has it. It runs well and has never been restored. It is located in Albany Western Australia. It is a 1929 Willys Overland Whippet Model 96A. Body was built by Holdens, and it is a Phaeton (Tourer) which has been made into a utility but retains all 4 doors. Good to see your work!
That's what I was thinking hope that water pump don't let go and go through that rad being it's a good rad hope it was just the pulley and not the pump itself because I wanna see this thing roll on down the road on all fours
Get some Hi-Temp ceramic aluminum paint, spray into a can, slather it on that exhaust while HOT. 3-4 coats will seal the pores & save it from blowout of rust. I'd also run it with Lead additive in the gas. Could you make a mould of that air horn, and cast your own?
if you need cloth covered fuel lines just use the stuff made for classic vw's.....get the german made stuff though, I might have some layin around the garage if you need some.
When I'm questioned about talking to myself, I usually tell people "You know, from time to time I enjoy talking to someone that thinks the same way I do. " Folks will usually quietly turn around and walk away. :)
Runs great now, love this car. All engines need to run a bit to bed the valves after being stood, or stripped. Sure you'll get a wheel sorted soon. Missing video is with these cameras that turn on when you flip the screen. Glance at the camera and think it's recording. 10 minutes later, after talking to yourself, find you have to do it all again lol, unless of course it's something you can't.
I would of loved to see the oil pump and pick up to see how they differ from modern engines. I also would of like to seen the timing set-up since the generator was driven the timing chain.
I found wire with braided coat used for stove / oven repair. It has a high temperature braided sheath that would look authentic. What part of Indiana were you looking for someone in for the wheel separation?
damn that thing runs good too bad that guy could not answer you about that wheel instead of ignoring you but some weired people out there on ebay anyways hope you find something to get that rolling on all fours to be able to take her for a rip
This car makes me smile Jonathan! I'm sure you'll find your wheels eventually. Wonder if you could adapt a set off a Model A? They're plentiful I'm sure. Keep up the good videos I like ALL your projects! Newk from Kentucky
I remember reading something, about the time I got out of high school, that there was some technology shared between Chrysler, and Whippet. While I think your car is a year, or two, too old, it might be worth while to see if Chrysler wheels might fit. John and Walter might have been trading tech before '30-'31. If they were, you might get lucky with a Chrysler wheel.
I think you will have to soak the Wheels in Linseed Oil, before you use them. They Look a bit Dry... You may have to use Boiled Linseed Oil, it gets sticky but it works great...
Got a question, what is the large canister mounted on the engine firewall. I’ve seen them on some Chrysler products and it never occurred to me to ask what this thing does. Sooooo, What does it do?
I'm not sure, but I think I saw the radiator shift towards the fan when you revved up the motor or leaned on the body (around 15:05). With the play in the water pump, that fan might get to close to the rad for comfort.
Thanks, I was wondering. I assumed that the two upper struts going to the radiator shell provided the support, and that they were loose or worn out. I guess the engine mounts are solid?
