Yes. Can you just imagine how many modern disposable razors get discarded everyday worldwide?
@MJFallout
@MJFallout 11 дней назад
Nonsense though. The razor blades shown here are meant to be disposed and replaced. In fact these Gillette blades and razors are often shown as the archetype and the very beginning of the business model of convincing consumers to keep buying replacement parts, the 'Razor and blades model', a model that, to this day, is responsible for short product lifespans and unnecessary waste the whole world over. The fact that Siemens made a little doohickey to re-sharpen them a few times doesn't change the fact that these are disposable blades, not meant to last longer than a few months, at best.
@PH4RX
@PH4RX 10 дней назад
There are no "non disposable" things. Stuff simply degrades. Sure, you can fix, mend and repair them a few times (which is often a few times more than modern stuff) but you aren’t restoring them.
@secularnevrosis
@secularnevrosis 9 дней назад
@@PH4RX I started using an old shaving knife and razor a couple of years ago. Works totally fine as long as you keep things sharp. Haven't bought anything in regards to shaving, except foam since then. It just works and works. Then you sharpen things and continue.
@PH4RX
@PH4RX 8 дней назад
@@secularnevrosis They do but the process of sharpening takes away material. So eventually you have to replace it. It's just the nature of things.
@LTCDRRAZOR
@LTCDRRAZOR 11 дней назад
The loop was so you could hang it off of the side of your bathroom mirror/medicine cabinet or somewhere similar. You would put the blade in, leave it hooked up, grab the other end of the cord, and just move it back and forth along the cord that you and the medicine cabinet were now holding steady. Bonus knowledge, if you have ever noticed a small slit/slot on the back of medicine cabinets, this was for you to slide your old, used, rusty razors through. They would then fall between the layers of the bathroom wall and the room next to it. We found more than a few walls filled with rusty razor blades when doing remodels. Just like under some fire places is a grate that opens up, like in my grandparents house. This dumps into an ash holding room, some often had no access, just like the wall where people dumped their used up razor blades.

@wyw876
@wyw876 8 дней назад
@@petternorman6192 Aha! I think you've cracked the line of thinking for the inventor of this contraption, it's a mechanical strop for those who grew up in the days before throwaway safety razor blades, and were used to stroppping blades for continued use!

Why would a discerning gentleman use disposable razors? You know humans have been shaving for literally thousands of years before someone invented disposable razors right? Straight razors were used by the upper class. Because back then labor was cheap and it was easy to hire an entire house full of servants. You can even shave with a knife if you know how to sharpen it.

No it isn't. Of all the things you could have possibly picked, you couldn't have found a more wrong example than this. These are disposable razor blades. They're meant to be used and thrown away. They replaced straight razors, which were meant to be sharpened and used over and over again. You know how printers are cheap and ink is expensive? That's called the razor blade model. No prizes for guessing why. These safety razor blades were one of the earliest products in the "use it once and throw it away" trend that we're living in today. This is where it all started, and it was *wildly* successful.

@@sac3528 Sorry, but you may not have watched the video carefully. The item shown there is not a cassette for storing blades. This is a machine for sharpening these very blades. And it was clearly made before the adoption of the theory of stimulating demand due to the transition to the production of one-time things. And if you think that this theory is optimal marketing, then I must upset you. It's more of a crazy living of resources. Crazy and meaningless. Although it gives a momentary increase in profits.

Clever little device and sweet restore. One thing, not sure if it makes a difference, but you didn't put the cord back the way it was originally. It went over the guide then under the gear, you have it under the guide now. Probably would change the tension. Easy fix if you wanted to try it the other way to see if it works better or not.

I bought my first safety razor back in the 60's and carried it with me through my military years. I've tried the BIC razor and numerous others but when I want to look my best my old safety razor is still the best. Now trying to buy blades is becoming harder to find. If that razor blade sharpener would have been found easily way back then I would have had one but blade were readily available and cheap. Nice job on the restoration.

I still use the old style double edge safety razors and blades. When the blades get too dull to shave with I break them into two halves and use each half as a gasket scraper when I have to do repairs on my car. I never realized that there was ever a sharpener for them. That's pretty cool.
