Hi Chris, I came across this video today while looking for a way to resolder a broken single hinged door. Your video gave me confidence to tackle the problem. While I had a slippery reference point for a single hinged door, I started by cleaning the surfaces and then using my soldering iron. After many expletives and failed attempts, I had a pool of solder on the inside rim near the hinge position and I eventually used a little gas torch to finish the job (trying to be careful to not overheat and then let the solder harden before letting go of it). I think it was the 5th attempt before I was able to get the right result - but pretty happy with the outcome and the door aligned really well with the catch with a strong bond at the hinge . Many thanks for your detailed instructions on the approach to fixing these little marvels. I'm a fan - thanks for your help.

Great work Mark! Funny thing is that we learn more from having five attempts at something before it works, instead of getting something right the first time! I'll bet you'd be a boss at the job next time! 👌😀

Looks good now, and sounds great. That white gunk might have been lithium grease. 👍

It is a rather boxy looking clock compared to some Kayle - they had such a huge range of shapes and styles at the time!

It was fun watching you do all the work it needed. I have a couple of clocks that need that. I'm looking for a certain Japanese Takano clock. How do I find pictures? This one had grooves going down verticly and bead work. I can't seem to find another one like it.

A very fair repair! You'll never get rich doing them, but that was never your plan... I'd like to set it on top of a guitar amp hooked up to a recording of Big Ben, covered up with a table cloth! Did I mention I like the odd prank? Yes... the chime was a little worn, but I found a replacement! See what you think!?
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler Год назад
Haha, with the amp turned up to 10! Yep - I'd like to see that! 🤣

Your style of "agricultural" clock fixing matches mine Chris. I might have used Brake and Part cleaner in a spray can. Did you note that the three barrels are in slots, and can be removed without dismantling the clock completely? That way (if the effort is worth it) you can clean the clock in engine cleaner, which rinses off with water (which then won't get in to the barrels), and can be dried in a low oven or outside on a hot day. I recently did one in petrol, and the petrol smell lasted for ages. I wasn't very proud of my efforts. Also, do you know whether IPA dissolves the shellac as well? I've never stopped to think. I imagine it does... Thanks for my style of restoration 🙂

Thanks Dave. I grew up on a farm, so can be a little "agricultural" at times! 🤣 I did notice the removable spring barrels and mentioned that at the end I think. I didn't want to go to that much trouble - but it will be necessary down the track. I don't seem to have trouble with a petrol smell - maybe it's a different formula here?? I haven't tried IPA on shellac.. will have to test that!
