Thanks for sharing! Wonderful footage not just of the TRIPLE CROWN races, but of the grandstands, celebrities, fashions, cars, and that tray of Mint Julips. I loved hearing the thundering of the hooves......wild with 17 horses in the Derby. He won the Preakness by a nose; the Preakness was the race that his half brother, Middleground loss while winning the Derby and the Belmount. Only Texas horse to win the Triple Ground! TEXAS BRED AND TEXAS PROUD.!
Great footage. I never realized his wins were that visually impressive. When he was on his game, he was a great horse. Glad he won the triple crown, because otherwise, he would have been forgotten by most. Fun to watch 3 year old.
Assault won his Triple Crown the year I was born. Maybe that was an omen for my life, because I grew up loving Thoroughbred horses and following racing my entire life. Belated congratulations Assault!
and him coming out of that surveyor stake accident with his hoof, had a limp at a walk and trot, but still was able to go 42 starts! i’m learning about him and am super impressed. meanwhile all the excuses in the world for a horse to race barely a quarter number of those starts today. anything to get that stud fee asap. can’t even just be patient. i just don’t get it
Assault had a full sister named Equal Venture (1953), who would go on to produce Prove Out (1969), who would go on to defeat Secretariat in the 1973 Woodward Stakes, and defeat Riva Ridge in the 1973 Jockey Club Gold Cup. Both those race videos are currently available on youtube. Steve Haskins has called Prove Out "The Unbeatable Horse", because at that point in his career, he pretty much was unbeatable.
