I get the feeling Jay is specifically using these videos as a future preservation tool. One day sadly Jay will be gone, and his cars auctioned off (hopefully on many decades). You KNOW that each of these videos will be played with the car, and will be treasured by the future owner. It's almost like Jay is speaking directly into the future.

As a Brit I have only seen glimpses of his other life as a comedian and talk show host. I'm really impressed with Jay's reverence and respect for the great engineers, designers and renovators who dedicate their lives to creating and restoring these wonderful historic vehicles. Jay comes across as a genuine guy who sees himself as curator and custodian of some of the worlds most coveted vehicles. The result is a very watchable series, like a book I just can't put down!

He doesn't have to share these things with us. It's not like he needs the fame and I bet with production costs this channel is only breaking even. We even get to see things when they don't go perfect. So if you're the kind of person who likes to leave angry comments, do what you got to do. I'm sure he was cringing from that scrape that they put on the underside of the gullwing, but it was neat seeing him give the "no big deal". That's one of the big reasons why I admire him and his shop and all these videos he shares - he drives and uses his stuff, doesn't just polish and stare at them. That scrape just adds to the patina. Jay, if you're reading this, I just wanted to say how much admiration I have for you. And it's not the usual admiration for a Hollywood star because I really don't have any admiration for any of those people. It's admiration for what a normal, regular person you are despite being a Hollywood star. I admire your love for vehicles, your knowledge of them and the way you present this show. You must have had numerous fights with executives who have wanted to hide the occasional imperfections that crop up (like the scratch in today's episode). These people always want to present a sanitized, squeaky clean image of life, even while presenting a reality show. I want you to know that there are people out there (I am one) who greatly appreciate the fact that you show it like it was filmed..like it occurred. A true reality show. I watch every episode. Keep up the good work. There are very few people I subscribe to on RU-vid but I will always be a subscriber to this show. ...a Canadian fan in St. Catharines, Ontario

Mine's pretty diverse if you consider the volume to wealth ratio! :-D But seriously, no. Jay's got some Edwardian steam thing parked next to a 1950s racing car, next to an electric carriage, next to an early 90s hot hatch, next to an exotic 80s supercar, next to a prewar land speed record breaker... it just goes to each and every extreme. Brilliant!

@ekner
@ekner 8 лет назад
The centre of gravity is probably very similar to a big front wheel drive car, so the suspension would be fine. Think lorry suspension, really heavy duty stuff. As far as the design decision of making it with such a huge overhang... Crash safety would be like if you put an egg on the nose of a brick and drove it around like that, lol :P That's taking into account the materials and design styles of the time. A modern version of that transporter could be as safe as any new lorry if you really wanted to make it.

*As a comedian, an automobile collector, historian & buff, a restorer, the literal 'savior' of automobile of many different types and designs, rare automobiles that would otherwise have been left to decay, or worse, be destroyed. Mr. Leno has done more for our collective automobile history that he should be honored with an award by the combined world's auto manufacturers, (or what's left of them, anyway) And, just for being a regular guy, a good man that happened to make it BIG. However, even though I truly admire and respect Jay for so many and varied reasons... Mr, Leno is really one of the most truly absentminded drivers I've ever seen drive a car! lol. He rarely stays in one lane, always veering off into the next lane! He's a true 'Sunday Driver' lol! Yes, I am aware that Jay is actually an excellent driver, but just watch the way in which he drives in these videos, it's, as Jay would say, 'Hilarious!' lol.*

People don't think of future values on what seems junk. Heck I see things all the time that I trashed as a kid and it's now worth something. I have a friend in his late 70s that is a real car guy and saved many things but he is really sad to think of when he was a kid how many of those old cars he cut up with a torch for a guy that sold scrap metal. They wouldn't have more than scrap value for 30-50 years. Think about what you throw away today as junk and what it could be worth in 50 years. Then again in 50 years it might still be junk.

I'm impressed by how calm Jay is when he says "hey hold on George the ramp is collapsing" and then, when his Priceless Mercedes is being winched back up and the bottom of it it's coming within a fraction of an inch of contacting the ramp he doesn't say anything, then later he says something like a good thing this one has a crummy paint job or something like that. One of the advantages of a crummy paint-job. What happened? Nothing, just another sign that his cars are USED instead of stored and not driven! Any car collector should be like him. Drive them, and when needed fix them back up!

Back up to 12:25 There is no scratch. But it happened right where Jay was supposed to be watching so he has no one to blame but himself. Note that there is a break in the video so some expletives were probably uttered in the interim before he resumed his talk-show host unflappability.

You hit the nail on the head with your comment, Malcolm! You are exactly correct! He is kind enough to share his love of these vehicles with the world, and our lives become more enriched with each video that he makes - may he live forever - I wish that his collection could be preserved as a singular entity, and his garage turned into a museum, or at least turned over to the Petersen Museum, which Jay loves only second to his own collection!

yea that's exactly my thoughts aswell and sure the restoration aint complete but im sure he didnt like that deep down inside. then again he probably doesnt care too too much about that because he isnt into these things because of the investment potential. he rarely sells cars and the ones he does probably dont interest him anymore. like the VIN # 003 Hemi Challenger (2012 or whatever) he sold at auction. back then you couldnt have the manual at all for the Challenger (how stupid is that). and a while back he sold his F150 Harley Davidson edition. the very first one made and the very first one to have the SVT Lightning package which didnt come in until later in the years of the Harley Davidson editions.

Hot Wheels recently issued a Leno's Garage Premium 4-pack, with the Tank Car, 2017 Ford GT, 2015 Ford GT350R, and this, the "Blaues Wunder", or "Blue Wonder". It's so wonderful to have this thing in an affordable and more durable size. Plus, it can carry most Hot Wheels, often with the tires right up against the deck lip. I never knew what happened to the original after its career was done. Leave it to Mercedes-Benz to construct an exact replica of a one-off antique transporter. Inhear their vintage support program is still going strong. Also, gods bless Jay Leno. This man is not only living the dream, but he actually takes time to drive all these cars. You're a protector of holy relics.

we are so lucky Jay leno exists!! He not only has one of the best and coolest colections around, but he cares to make a youtube channel and share it with us. There are some impresive collections hiding from the world that owners dont want to share and show, which is a real shame. Those car collectors should take note of what a real car guy is, not some rich guy with millions of dollars in cars he never drives or shows to almost anyone.

Wow, that front end overhang is extreme. Spoon drains and humps would be a big issue, even with the front air bags up full. Weird that Mercedes made something like that. The way it was bouncing around at street speeds makes 100mph sound rather scary. Interesting vehicle.
