My ultimate goal is to add every option onto the Cadillac that was available in 1956. One of those options is the six way power seat. I have one from my parts car, let's see if I can get that to work again. But before that, I need to figure out why my battery does not want to start the car!
If interested in a TheCorvetteBen RU-vid Channel window decal, please send $5 through PayPal to Benjamin.friend56@yahoo.com. If you are international, please contact me first about price!

I remember seeing a collection of all factory 1956 American car convertibles in a guys storage garages! Everything from Chrysler, Ford and GM and maybe even Packard, I forget but, they were all the top models from all of the makes! Including Corvette, Thunderbird and even Dual Ghia! The guy loved 1956 and he loved convertibles, and they were mostly all original or restored, maybe just needing finishing touches! I think that he did say that he and his wife got married in his first new car, a 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible in 1956, or something like that and that was the start of his love for 1956 convertibles! An outstanding collection!

Standing in corner, arms crossed, foot tapping: OOOOOO, Ben's got a new video!!!! That we've been waiting not patiently for. Enough of that, I just wanted to suggest that you provide, occasionally, the approximate time it took to accomplish a task where you show the result but not the process, or not all of it. Even though I do this sort of work as a hobbyist, it still seems like it takes no time at all -- and I know better! As for the battery, in my experience, going from a deader to recharge can only occur so many times until the battery is no good. It's just lead-acid chemistry but also a PITA.

I have been told that when a lead acid battery is drawn all the way down with a low current draw it will often cause plates to distort in the battery and the plates will actually touch negative to positive and short out the battery internally. I had this happen on a Chevy pickup due to a problem with the brake light switch. As others have observed a battery disconnect switch is a rather inexpensive but totally fool proof to keep this from happening on a car that is not driven regularly.

Hey Ben, 11.4V is dead flat. Below about 12.4V the battery starts sulphating, which accelerates the demise of the battery. You should check the charge voltage when the car is running to make sure the generator and regulator are doing their thing correctly.

I didn't have to on my 65 Cadillac, But You can take apart and clean the connections in the switches, I had some issues on a 68 Cadillac where the plugs for the switches had bad connections. I broke the plastic spot welds cleaned and crimped the loops to make them smaller than used a soldering iron to re-melt spot welds one switch I soldered wires directly to prongs on one switch must be redone to remove the door panel sadly but the plastic plug socket was burned up and useless. and the motors are rebuildable as well. I think in 69 the thought went to replace not repair for motors.

@mikeobrien3744
@mikeobrien3744 4 года назад
Soem starters will spin but draw mopre amps than rated. That will kill a battery right quick. You would need a stout amp meter to test the pull of the motor. Good luck.
@GWMRed
@GWMRed 4 года назад
That would be acid in every cell. As I logged earlier, we found that was a terrible place for a battery because there's a lot of heat in that area. Moving the battery to the front of the engine compartment saved a lot of headaches and prevented corrosion in a n arly-inaccessible area. Coating the battery box pan with sodium bicarbonate helped, before the battery was relocated (an old trick we use in the aircraft).

One way to kill a battery is to let it get too low on acid and it will cause an internal short that will destroy the lead plates & separators. Overcharging either from a bad voltage regulator or a battery charger will do it. Typically we used to buy batteries rated at 24 months, 36 or 48 in those old open type batteries and one lasting five years or more was a real rarity.
@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 4 года назад
It rather sounds like the old battery from the Cadillac had developed a bad cell if it's showing a reasonable standing charge but won't do anything when a load is put on it. The fact that it was pushing the battery fluid out also suggests it was getting warm, which also could be a sign of a bad cell. It could just be a faulty unit and an internal joint has failed out, but it could be it may have been damaged in transit which could have cracked some of the lead inside...
@joealbert7773
@joealbert7773 4 года назад
You did a good job checking for a draw, but you should realize that the ammeter function on that meter is probably limited to 10 amps. You came awfully close with the power window. A draw of over 10 amps will blow a fuse inside the meter.
@joelpalmer
@joelpalmer 4 года назад
Ben. that isnt water In the battery. Its sulphuric acid. Try not to tip it and wear gloves when removing and installing. invest in a trickle charger to keep it charged. You can test for a parasitic draw by using a multimeter and removing one fuse at a time. Good luck with the land yacht!
@iaagg
@iaagg 4 года назад
If the parasitic draws the battery voltage down too low it will ruin the battery. A battery needs to have a charge on it to stay good.

The point of the story?,it''s a 6 year old Walmart battery,it's starts every-time,but I have not allowed the battery to sulfate-down from leaving it connected and not charged occasionally. I seriously doubt you use your Caddy enough to keep your Caddy's battery in good condition.

Glam Stachee: Peugeot of America keeps track of the remaining 1,500+ Current Registered Peugeots in North America (which I am of);for the second assault attempt on America which is too occur on our shores within a years time. And if your do in fact have a Peugeot,I suggest you buy a rebuilt/used old-school 60s-80s GM alternator from a chain auto parts store or a junk-yard for $20-$59.00...all you need to do (with a file) is shave off about 1/16+ of inch(off a GM donor alternator casting) for a perfect fit. No clipping of/or cutting of Peugeot wires is necessary,if your Peugeot is XN6 powered,you just flip the tension-er bracket. GM alternators provide a good 14.00-15.3 volts(and higher amps) when the engine is warmed-up far better than the French or German alternators ever delivered. Make sure you snag/get a GM style pig-tail connector and solder a male adapter to connect to the Brown Peugeot Wire exciter wire(from alternator) which trips the alternator to charge and turn-off idiot light once engine is running. Belt size change may be necessary if its a Diesel or Gas Turbo. For the record,anybody that knows anything about ,old-school GM alternators;they are the choice regardless of car brand.....Iv'e even seen a Rolls Royce with a 75-amp GM alternator on it, bearing and regulator kits are dirt-cheap and easy to replace if and when that time occurs.

@@dmcnamara9859 Well I'm in Europe, so GM isn't really a thing apart from Opel. And I got another alternator....which of course didn't fit because there are like 10 different alternator types, so I had to take both the old and new one apart to change the guts out. Mine's also a 309, probably the rarest of the 80's Peugeots, less than 15 still exist in my country.

Glam Stachee: I had a 405 MI-16 which I regrettably gave to my friend's son's girlfriend (that thing gets around 40mpg+ around a 65mph cruise)....it has a 80s-90s Mazda 626 alternator....all I did when I had it,was add a couple of washers to alternator for it to line-up with the idler pulley. Peugeot then and the few outlets that sold NEW replacement parts wanted $400.00+ USA bucks,get one at Pick N Pull (junk yard from a Mazda 626)..........cost $20.00 plus $5.00 core charge GM and Toyota Nipponenso alternators are cheap to rebuild..........you don't need to replace the alternator if the : brushes,regulator, or bearings go south even in Europe.
@GlamStacheessnostalgialounge
@GlamStacheessnostalgialounge 4 года назад
@@dmcnamara9859 Didn't know the Mi-16 got that good gas mileage, my poor little 1.4 liter gets around 43 MPG combined, maybe around 50 highway, but it's still fast enough where tiny non-turbo diesels still reign. And yeah I thought about rebuilding the old alternator, but the entire thing was just fried from the inside, yet even this "new" one is starting to make bad bearing noises not 2 weeks after installing it, so that'll have to get fixed. My main issue now is the busted radiator I have. Doesn't overheat but drips coolant ever so slightly. No OEM replacements exists for my particular car as the radiators are one of the few things not shared with the more common 205. Found one for only 15 euro, we'll see how good it is once it arrives.

You've had this car how many years? I mean no disrespect, but you obviously love this car, which is why I'm puzzled as to why you haven't painted it yet. The patina look is played out. God bless.

@@aliceshaw8265 Ben had more into this car than it's worth 3 years ago. I'm just puzzled as to why a new, yet correct base/clear paint job hasn't been applied. I'm sure he'd make the money back in RU-vid views alone. It's a gorgeous Cadillac that needs to be painted IMO

1. Time, it would take a week straight just to prep the car and remove all the chrome, let alone paint 2. Money, why take all the time to prep if your not gonna do it right and go cheap with Rust-Oleum? If it's gonna get painted, it'll be a nice paint job.

@@TheCorvetteBen Hahahaa you reminded me of Derrick on the vice grip garage. "Do the RIGHT thing and a fella gets a can of rustoleum..."
