Eastern Shore Classic Cars is excited to present this rare 1958 Renault Dauphine “Gordini”. This example is in outstanding condition and even features a roll back sun roof rarely seen on this vehicle.
The Renault Dauphine was introduced in 1956 and at its debut, it was an instant hit. In the rear was a water-cooled 845-cc (51.6-cu.in.), 30-hp, OHC four-cylinder and a three-speed transaxle. Under the front hood a surprising 7 cubic feet of luggage space exists and a crank for cold weather starts. If you flipped away the door behind the front license plate, you found the spare tire, which slid out easily.
Perhaps the most striking thing about the Dauphine was the Italian influenced exterior styling. With a wheelbase measuring 227 centimeters (89.4 inches), Renault managed to create a small saloon with rounded edges, perfect proportions, and just enough accents to avoid it looking gaudy. It was stylish and, more importantly, photographed well from any angle. A clue to the engine location was air intakes integrated into the rear doors. The gas filler was also under the rear hood.
The front suspension was conventional, with upper and lower control arms with springs mounted between them and an anti-roll bar. Out back were "high pivot" swing axles with the shocks mounted within the springs in "trumpet casings.”
Amédée Gordini, a French race car driver, was hired by Renault to make the Dauphine a true competitor. In 1957, the Dauphine-Gordini, with a 38-hp engine and four-speed transaxle debuted. With a top speed of 120 kph (75 mph), it won the 1958 Monte Carlo Rally.
This is a rare opportunity for the Renault collector to acquire a “Gordini” in excellent condition. This is driver and show ready. The interior is spotless and the sheet metal is in excellent condition. Those in the know will appreciate how difficult it is to find one in this condition. Please contact hank at hank@easternshoreclassiccars.com or text at 201-317-9277 for details. The vehicle is located in South Central NJ. Offered at 21,000.00

I owned a 1967 Dolphin Renault. It was a great little car. Had plenty of room for five. 30 miles to the gallon. 4 on the floor. Water cooled. Great for around town. Lots of fun to drive. I wish that I had today.

We had a non Gordini (video in my profile) and it was such a beautiful car. It was restored by Lawrence Dooley and he did an exceptional job! I wish I never sold it.

Really the best paint job I ever saw on a Dauphine. That Gordini does I suppose testify to a genuine Gordini spec engine. We upgraded a standard Dauphine to Gordini.

Cool! My parents had a regular '68 R10 in late seventies for a second car. Very neat and quirky car. 4 wheel disc brakes, tiny radial tires, and horn was on the turn signal with a country/city setting. It had a piston failure after a few years, so I never had an opportunity to drive it. I remember it was fortunate the max speed at the time on the hiways was 55, because that was about as fast as it would go.

Gorgeous car! This video really illustrates the Dauphine's advantages over the VW Beetle -- more rear seat room, easier rear seat access with the four doors, more trunk space, and real cabin heat with the water cooled engine. If only they had been as reliable as early Beetles and had a better dealer network in the US.

I was stationed at Hickam AFB temporary duty. 1966. An E2 airman bought a used car, his wife, a nurse was coming to Hawaii so he needed a car. Cars were very expensive. About two days before I returned state side he had found a car. It was a Reanult Dolphine. $ 300. I went to look at the car. Outside looked good. The interior had burned out. Really. His seat was a metal milk crate. No other seating. Hecwas planning oncfinding seats for the car.

great design. Why aren't small electric vehicles designed like these? Even now, if this vehicle had an electric one, it would be bought.
@fjp912
@fjp912 11 месяцев назад
Ha! Believe it or not, a small number of Dauphines were converted to electric power in the early 60's. Look up "Henney Kilowatt." They had a range of about 60 miles on lead-acid batteries. If you did this using today's batteries and technology, the range would be much better -- but the car still wouldn't pass a single 21st century safety test.

Yeah, VW had a dealer network: Renault never really did. VW had an ad campaign, with a major ad agency; Renault didn't. VW sold its cars based on what they weren't (luxurious, skilfully made, well-designed); Renault didn't. VW had a car designed by a man who should have been tried and convicted as a war criminial; Renault didn't have that either.
@caribman10
@caribman10 Год назад
@@XXLkielbasa No, it was the almost complete lack of a national dealer network. The VW had enough cheap junk (an optional gas heater that was attached to the gas tank? A windshield washer that used the spare tire for pressure, steadily deflating the spare?) . But VW had catchy commercials and a dealer network. Renault didn't.

Nice, old car. Bur really a terrible design with the motor at the rear. Very bad roadholding and no safety at all. Heavy oversteering. A death trap! Compared to other french cars of the time with front wheel drive and the motor at the front, this construction is a pure disaster!
