Very well done Christine💪🇸🇪 A man is driving down an old dirt road As he is driving he notices there are very few houses nearby, as he is enjoying the scenery he runs his car over into the ditch. As it had recently rained the ditch was slick and muddy and he had found himself stuck. He realizes his predicament so he starts walking. He walks up to a house and see's a farmer plowing his field while his wife is dropping in seeds and his kid is burying the seeds. The man asks the farmer "Hey, you got a phone? My car is stuck in the ditch." The farmer says "I'll unhitch my horse and pull you out." The man says "No I need a phone to call a wrecker, my car is stuck in the ditch." But the farmer insists on using his one horse. So the man and the farmer walk back to the car, as they approach the car the farmer says, "I'll hook him to the bumper and you put it in neutral" the man says ok. So he gets in his car and puts it into neutral, the farmer gets behind the horse and says, "Come on Dusty, come on Matt, come on Richard," then the farmer says "Come on Elmer" then the horse, with ease pulls the car out of the ditch. In shock the man asks the farmer why he called the horse so many names. The farmer says "well, Elmer is blind, and if he thinks he is working by himself he won't pull"

Really did awesome job there Matt!! Just to give you a small pointer when grading. Remember that you. Stand the mold board up to cut and move material. And to do finish work you follow over your board to smooth and fill. You see the adjustments on each side to di that with. The next time that you grade those cuttings on the driveway fold forward the moldboard and turn your blade to the side so you put a windrow in the middle of the driveway. Make a pass down each side rolling material and leaving overflow in center. Make your final pass with the blade angled a bit towards the outer edge of drive giving you a crown from center to outside so as it settles and packs it gives a slight slope to have runoff from rain. Make you final passes and it rolls the material in front of blade and will fill in the small imperfections. Then a simple passover with the roller and you'll have a driveway that will maintain for many long years. Just a simple blading as needed in years ahead. My father spent his entire life as a heavy equipment operator- IUOE 841, he took pride in his finish grade work. He told me, any mouth breather can dig a hole, push dirt around, or cut a slope, finish grade work separates the men from boys. He would challenge himself to cut road crown in before they staked it out and be within tolerance when they did stake it.

Fantastic job on Christine. I never thought watching someone restore a piece of rusty history could be so addictive. Have you thought of excavating a ditch on the left of the road to help with that wet patch, possibly going in to the creek for drainage, maybe a colllab with letsdig18?

This is probably one of the most satisfying videos you've ever posted. I love seeing you wrench on things and fix up this equipment, but seeing it at work is best part by far. It was particularly nice seeing Christine doing what she was meant to do after all of the hours fixing her up and making her look nice.

I like the “cleaning up and organizing “ your area and seeing the transformation. Always like to see you continuously improving what you have! We all try and do that…. Great job!

Now that is pretty damn cool! I used to love those old graders as a kid- those old ‘50s models were still working then, and I always liked them...

The first time I ran a blade it’s was a CAT12 with all mechanical blade controls. I was a kid but in heaven! I bladed off to the sides and the road was a masterpiece (for me). Only problem was a removed the crown. You must angle the blade to the center instead of the sides to keep the crown my dad said a flat road won’t drain the water. . So I got a stern talking and had to fix it. I still won cause I got more blade time!

Matt, I’m no way mechanically inclined, but I’ve learned so much by watching your videos. I really enjoy watching and always look forward when you put out a new one. Btw, the driveway with the help of Christine turned out awesome!

Matt, thanks for all your videos, I really enjoy them. I'm Australian, so our terminology and methodology may differ. You don't seem to be grading a "crown" into your road, just grading it flat. A crown, even on the single lane will assist in water displacement/run off, not leaving water pooling on the surface causing damage. Sorry if I am telling you something you know. Keep up the good work. 😀

Finally getting to use Christine to make huge progress on another farm project must be a huge morale boost! Don't suppose I could convince you to haul her all the way to Texas and shape up my driveway, lol. Keep it up!

Hey, Matt, you should pull back from the sides to "crown" the center for good drainage.

After all the work, go for a ride on a mini bike to enjoy the results. Perfect.

You may want to address the water and drainage on the sides, I’ve seen that soften a road up if left to seep in over time, looks great Matt keep it up.

Matt, Awesome Job! Once you are able to review the driveway performance in the rain, you may want to consider re-openning the drainage ditches on each side and possibly crown the driveway to improve drainage runoff so water doesn't sit and permeate your work creating soft spots or places for pot holes to develop.

So gratifying to finally use something that you’ve invested time and money into for really one purpose of your own stuff and to finally be able to use it for that purpose. No other feeling like it. Awesome.

Matt seeing you work with the old Galion road grader reminded me of my first job with a construction company in 1957, I was given a pair of mules and introduced to a machine called a fresno, a man making or maybe a man killer hand operated drag bucket, I would cry at night from my blisters on my hands but after a couple of weeks the hands were covered with callus, WOW!! you do great work with that old Galion

Great job! 😀 Would you consider digging a drain next to the road? There's a lot of water lodged beside it. It would be a shame to have it destroy the new road surface with potholes etc. Just a thought. It's probably low down the priority list 😀.

You’ve had several jobs Matt and I’ll have to say you nailed the grader the roller the road and even the video on the mini bike. That camera didn’t move on those rips. Good job. Hoping to see that shop go up with the crane. Can’t wait.

You know I loved trucks and tractors growing up. I still remember while still in a wheelchair after double foot surgery my cousin taking me to watch when they built the highway, he pushed me up on top of the hill so we could watch all the tractors digging, trucks going, etc. And even just in general any time there was road maintenance or they where digging out the ditches near my house I'd always go watch the backhoe work. Heck even in Winter I always watched out for when the council put the big plow on the front loader as I lived on a side street, loved watching them push massive amounts of snow. But am I the only guy that always found Graders specifically to be the freakiest bloody thing to ever drive down the road? I loved big trucks, I loved all other types of tractors, but man did Graders freak me the heck out when I was young. lmao

A technique used here in Australia and no doubt in other parts of the world to spread finer material such as gravel and millings is to use a couple of chains on the bottom of the tail gate to limit the opening of it. This consists of a couple of pieces of chain fastened to the tip body and a couple of notched pieces of flat plate welded to the tail gate. The opening is controlled by which chain link is in the notch. I think that you do it well the way that you are doing it but thought the use of the chains may be a little easier.

I guess you really 'made the grade' on this one! Excellent work as alway.

When you bought Christine I was thinking what are you getting yourself into… I admit I was wrong… she has turned out amazing… and she is earning her keep. Nothing like reclaiming old iron, and putting it back to work. 👍

All I know about road grading is from watching Letsdig18 grade his driveway, and he did it the way you did: many small or shallow passes to level it out and then a finishing grade and crown. I think he would approve of your work. Good old Christine still does the job just as well as when she rolled off the factory floor. Thanks for saving her from the weeds and trees.

Lovely seeing Christina do what she was designed for, you must be really proud of the work you've done to not only get her to do this, but show her off as well. Love it when old machines are brought back to life, so they can fulfill their legacy. That's better than a lot of our roads over here in the UK and there tarmacked!

Not disappointed in the least. As an old guy born in 1946 and raised with this old technology and things "Made in the USA". It's nice to see something I recognize under a hood. All these new cars and trucks made today just have no soul.

Congratulations Matt! The Diesel Creek Interstate turned out very nice! I have made similar tracks here on our farm in the UK. As you graded it flat across the width, if that top coat settles out and you get some ponding on the road that wants to soak into the road sub-base, you might want to consider taking the grader back over it and put a bit of a camber on it so the middle is a slight high point and roll it as two strips that fall away from the centre line to help the road shed the rainfall to the sides. I noticed some wet areas beside the road. Here in the UK, we would also probably dig a shallow curved ditch / gulley each side to take the rain and lower the water table under the road to stop the sub base getting soft. Either way, it's a great road Matt! And it's very satisfying for us viewers to see you go from total forest to finished roadway. Looking forward to the new shop when it happens! I love seeing the place get cleaned up and I love what you’ve done with the road!!!! If it was my road I would push the trees farther back from the road and put in some good ditches!!!

The secret to using millings as a topcoat to your driveway is a 3 part process. Evenly spread the millings, lightly spray diesel fuel and then roll and compact the surface. For the best results choose a dry, very hot day.

Matt, I would say you are doing very well with your OJT!!! I live in E.Liverpool, Ohio just a few miles from where your farm and shops are!! Nicely done...my only comment is when grading dirt roads "crown" the middle of it meaning to make the middle slightly higher than than sides to help with drainage. Christine ran great!

..I remember seeing these scraping the county roads when I was a little kid in the early '70's..loved watching them...I remember thinking it said "Gallon" on the side of them, not "Galion"..😁

5:25 when we had dump trucks (scandinavia) we had the pivot for the tail gate on upper side (I think you have holes for it, looks like that) on the sides of the bed that hold the gravel. And a chain that restricted the opening of the bottom of the tail gate, if thats what its called in the US. Gives a more even spread, and if you want to save gravel, put a barrel in the middle and just put gravel on the tracks.
