Here's the description from my dad about the car itself. "I was given a dilapidated 1961 Corvair "Lakewood" station wagon in 1995. It sat until 2019 when I decided I would either do something with it..., or get rid of it. Using many "old school" techniques such as knurling pistons, lapping valves, taking half a thousandth off the rod cap, etc. were employed. The Powerglide transmission was assembled from the better parts of two transmissions. I will only drive the Lakewood about 100 miles a year so a full rebuild was not warranted. I get a lot more joy out of "MacGuyvering" a few thousand miles back in the motor than if I rebuilt it properly to go another 100,000 miles. The engine was somewhat troublesome but eventually rewarding when it fired up. The day prior electrical problems mandated workaround wiring to get it going."
According to the story, my dad was told, the car was driven from Michigan to California in 1973 and it has sat ever since. The car was in the "Penny Saver" for $150 when my dad originally calls about it. Two weeks later my dad calls again and the guy goes "I am moving, it is yours for the taking." When my dad picked it up he borrowed a friend's truck and rented a trailer to get it over to where it sits now. I only set the camera up thinking "well if it blows up my dad has a video for the forums and if it works he has a video showing off what he did" not expecting it to go how it did. If you got any questions regarding the car/what was done leave them down below and hopefully at a later time my dad can respond to them.

Oh, how I miss my ‘65 Corvair Monza. In my sci-fi novel, the main character (a very smart teenage hottie) buys a metallic turquoise secondhand Lakewood as her first car.

Good luck with your project! Lakewood is very cool and getting difficult to find. I know exactly how you felt when it started up for the first time, I had a difficult time getting a '64 Corvair FC to start this year. Local Corvair club will be your friend~

Thanks, it is actually my dad's car but he did have to do some scrounging to get the vehicle to this point. A combo of parts that came with the car, parts he bought/traded online, and I may have helped a little along the way too!

Thanks for the encouragement. I have two 64 two-doors one running. the other, a 4-speed has been sitting for years...wish me luck. I do use leaded (no ethanol) gas.

NP! I figured no matter the outcome of the first start it would be interesting to see what happened. Are you burning avgas in yours? My dad just used some regular unleaded he had sitting in the gas can.

That's what like about a air cooled engine ! Most of the time they can sit for decades , & eventually you'll get them running ! Unlike a water cooled engine , But that depends on what part of country your in with a water cooled .

One less thing to worry about for sure! Not to mention all you need to worry about is a belt going bad, not a water pump, radiator, hoses, radiator caps, coolant... For all the peculiarities of that engine, I can see why they chose it for the application too!

gas & oil change! I'd run it straight from the gas can!! good luck! don't forget the penetrating oil !! OMG!! runs like a sewing machine!!

Considering this engine was SEIZED by the corrosion from years of rat pee, to see it running now is incredible.
