It's good to know that there's guys like Jonathan that love finding vehicles that time forgot, and making sure that they're no longer forgotten.

I had a 49 dodge Panel I dragged home back in the 70s,It was used for a dog house at a farm for a St Benard dog.Sat with the hood open for 20 years,was missing 2 spark plugs..The engine was covered with pine needles.Had it running and was driving it around the field the same day! Miss those old day,Was so much fun!!

this is right down my alley,, I like to make something old work again, my brother and I used to drag in old cars and lots of the times the engines were ok.. sometimes we got lucky and was able to drive them home by attaching an outside gas can and bypass the old rotten fuel in the tank and we always had one of the 100 # propane tanks converted to an air tank so we could see if the tires held air and if all was ok, we'd drive it home.
@jonathanw4942

I use to do that when I was a teen and didn't have a way of hauling them. It's nice to get them running great, but the joy is to hear them run again. It's still up in the air as to the engines actual condition, but We will both know in a couple days.

that was great Jonathan nothing better than hearing a motor come back to life one cylinder at a time. still needs some tlc but should be fine. had a 350 a few years back that sounded like it had no spark plugs in it that took 15 mins of steady cranking to get to go. i have always got a motor to run so long as will turn. cant wait to see how many bent push rods you find. keep up the great videos

Before starting an engine that has sat for a long while. It is advantageous to pour some oil in the spark plug holes, and turn the engine over by hand a few times. It makes the whole starting process much easier, I think.

Speed Racer That is so true. A lot of the videos that I see on you tube of these old vehicles being started for the first time, they get rate in them and start cranking them. It helps lube the cylinder walls so you don't do damage on a dry start. Thank you for giving that info.

Hello Jonathan, enjoyin' your videos. Remove that oil cap off the valve cover and listen closely. I suspect you have a pushrod that is not seated into the rocker arm, AND a stuck intake valve (or 2) on that or another cylinder.
@desotofiresweep58
@desotofiresweep58 5 лет назад
those old 318 poly head engines were bad for back popping through the carb when they were cold, damn good engine when they run , lots of torque, and with that stromberg 2 bbl carb they were actually pretty good on fuel

@johnwade5747
@johnwade5747 6 лет назад
On those 2 Bbl. Carbs You can squirt 2 stroke gas through I n oil can around the accelerator lift-rod and pre fill the bowl, (so you won't have to grind it over dry for long) AND hopefully soften up the pump's leather at the same time.., assuming no one has touched the gas pedal first and damaged the cup. It is a cool old Dodge.

when i have worked on a vehicle that appears to be dead, but stll turns over, some of the first that i do is remove the plugs check for spark from all spark plug leads then check all plugs for spark, if no spark, it is either the coil or the condenser playing up or the points are bad. The next is do some cleaning up of the plugs and points, replace the coil & condenser, the next thing that i do is spin the motor over a few times whilst listening for any noise, i always rip the carby apart then give it a good clean up making sure that the jets are clear, after that, i put it all back together, wack it back on connect it all up, give it fuel then crank it over to see if it will start

Had a 73 coupe de ville with a 472 4 bbl th400 been sittin for about 3 yrs before we gave it to my aunt it had a dead miss and rattle slowly poured 2 it's of trans fluid thru the carb it got worse as it burned the fluid but after about 45 mins it cleared up and ran like a top it loosened all the carbon off the valves and unstuck a few rings that were stuck wouldn't hardly pull its self out of it's own tracks before , afterwards it would lite up the back tires
@LarryDeSilva64
@LarryDeSilva64 7 лет назад
well i must say you are about as tenacious as a bull dog when it comes to getting those engines running I would have given up after 10 minutes lol. Well I would have pulled the valve covers and checked those out next i would have checked the plugs and wires all the normal stuff before I even attempted to start it. But like you said you were just trying to find out if the engine would fire at all. It did finally after you kept loosening it up a bit too much blow by through the breather but hey you will get it eventually i'm sure.

Hey Jonathan, I got a question for you, my grandpa has an old McCormick international 400 gas/diesel tractor that's been sitting for the last 3 decades. I've gotten it to fire up and run good on gas but I can't get it to switch to diesel it'll only run on 1 or 2 cylinders of 4 when I switch it over to run on diesel. All the cylinders are getting fuel as well. Do you know what could be wrong?
@jonathanw4942
@jonathanw4942 5 лет назад
That is a u d style engine. It has an extra valve that opens to make the chamber bigger to run on gas my guess is when you close the chamber to run on diesel it's still leaking compression past that valve into the gasoline chamber.
@noaherickson7385
@noaherickson7385 5 лет назад
Okay interesting. So say some of those valves are maybe just sticking open or not seating well how hard is it to access them and trying to get them unstuck? I'm not super familiar with these motors
@jonathanw4942
@jonathanw4942 5 лет назад
You will probably have to pull the head the third valve works on the linkage from the lever you push to change it to diesel. Marvel Mystery Oil in the engine may help free them up. Take the valve cover off pour some in the top.
