Beautiful! We had a 62 Grand Prix for a number of years with 389 (.030 over), Tri-power, 8 lugs, and a 4 speed with factory tach. It had the power windows too! It was like sitting on a couch that just happened to moving down the highway. A Tri-power couch that sat 6 adults comfortably! It started my love of all things Pontiac. Thanks for a great video of one of my all time favorite cars. Semper Fi!

Me too, I had a white/white (top of the line). Must have lost my mind to sell it. I also had a '63 with the 421 midnite blue

@@chrisnizer1885 Hi Marine, I was a gunner on a 105 mm Howitzer, 1961 to 1967. GM had a winner, but destroyed the Pontiac. If anything left, it should have been Buick. Today I drive a GMC Sierra Stepside 1500. It is lowered 4 & 5, rides like a caddy... I am now 76... Semper Fi

These early models were so fricking cool, I couldn't understand why pontiac went to a larger body style! The 70's models were so large i didn't even consider them a grandPrix anylonger!😏

In my opinion, the Black 62' Grand Prix with its lack of body chrome was/is one of the best looking cars ever made.

In 1962, Chevy's had the Powerglide. Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Cadillac had the four-speed Hydra-Matic, and Buick had the Dynaflow. The three-speed GM Hydra-Matics weren't mandated until 1965. Also, Chevy had the "Turbo-Glide" automatic available in 1957, which was a continuously variable torque converter transmission with a planetary gearbox that allowed switchable performance modes. It proved to be troublesome. By '65, Hydra-Matics, of varying types, became the only transmissions for GM products, on the heels of the government mandate that all automatic transmissions on American roads follow the new standard "P-R-N-D-L" configuration on shift patterns.
@bobbyheffley4955
@bobbyheffley4955 23 дня назад
The P-R-N-D-L configuration was first used by Ford.
@robertwbingo
@robertwbingo 22 дня назад
@@bobbyheffley4955 True that. I had an uncle who had a '51 Ford Victoria with the Ford-O-Matic and it had the P-R-N-D-L arrangement.

If you're smart, you can use the vacuum pressure gauge as a performance assist with triple carbs. All you Indian devotees know what I mean...

Think you may find that's a speed minder instead of a cruise control. As far as I know cruise control wasn't available then.

My '63 Pontiac book says that the "Slim Jim" was a 3 speed auto except for the Bonneville. The Bonneville came with the 4 speed auto. I have an original '63 Grand Prix, 389 4 barrel with an auto, A/C and eight lug wheels.
@Quidamkid
@Quidamkid 4 года назад
The "Slim Jim" was a confusing bit of machinery. It was a 4 speed, but the 1st and 2nd gear were internally controlled with a shift point of 8 mph. Although the shift pattern showed Drive, 2nd, 1st and Reverse, the car was actually in 3rd when set in 2nd. To look the transmission up search for the Roto-Hydramatic 375 Model 10.
@bobbyheffley4955
@bobbyheffley4955 23 дня назад
The 4-speed automatic could also be found on Star Chief.

@starchief59 -- hello, yup, vacuum gauge was stock on all autos and mounted on center console but a 'sweep' tach like the vac gauge was an available option on tri-power 389 and 421's. it was mounted on upper left corner of dash.
@caribman10
@caribman10 Год назад
The tach wasn't an option; it replaced the vacuum gauge on automatics. The option was that on automatics you could get the tach on the dash. I never saw one, though.

Sorry; I had a '62 Bonnie HT with base 303hp and the latest and greatest 4-sp Hydramatic (no overdrive gear); I drove round trip from Ca to Iowa and back in 1963- that car got 19mpg. This was back in the day when engines were designed by ENGINEERS and not politicians and quality 100 octane fuel didn't hurt any either.
