Try the old hotrodder trick and use a Ford style solenoid. This will give you the most current possible. You merely add a short battery cable between the "Ford " solenoid and the starter. The VW start terminal on the starter is wired directly to the battery terminal of the starter. Connect the start wire from the ignition switch to the Ford starter. Oh yeah the cable from the battery goes to the Ford solenoid. The reason for this is current goes up when the starter motor gets hot, therefore you need the ability to get more current to the starter motor's solenoid
