Installing a hard start relay is simple and inexpensive. It will make your starting system more reliable and take the load of an aging electrical system.
I installed a relay a few days ago. With very little experience with VW's it took me all of 10 minutes to get it all wired up. Now my bug starts right up. Great information.
i did that on my 68 bug before the car was totaled but done it illustrated in the beetle restoration handbook by mounting the relay to the package tray close to the starter and the wires of the relay connector went straight to the starter and ground as it took the small wire off of the solenoid on the starter. as the next beetle i get will do the same be an older 63 bug after i convert it to 12 volt will use the old 6 volt starter as it should work
Informative video. Tnk you. Wish you were handy to me. I recently got a 74 super beetle basket case. Was all disassembled. Wiring puzzle! Currently I’m in the dash speedo ect....
Thought about adding a relay to the ignition X circuit (1970's onwards) so that only the headlamps are the direct load on this circuit. The screenwipers and the rear heated window are the other loads via fuse 10. These would be run via the relay. Seems to be done on most watercooled models but I'm not sure about the early T25 Transporters with the air-cooled engine.
Thank you for posting a helpful video. I just installed relay yesterday but one problemo: The moment i reconnect the battery, the car attempts to start rigjt away and the negative cable started to spark the battery post. I disconnected it right away. What i do wrong? 😅
Hi there’s a few things it could be, first up just check your wiring, make sure the power from the battery isn’t mixed up with the wire from the ignition switch, if they are back to front that will happen. Also if it’s a relay that has a terminal 87a that will happen, it needs to be on 87 instead. Other possibility is a faulty relay. Good luck
Just subscribed again. Don't know I got knocked off. I hope to have a few videos this week myself. I think your subscribed already . I'm off to watch your videos
so my beetle will start by touching the original starter wire to the battery but with this set up the key still won't work. What do you think it could be?
If it’s all wired up correctly it would either be a dead ignition switch or faulty relay. If you jump the wire from the ignition switch to the relay to the battery does it crank?
Great. I have a 1969 Karmann Ghia for sale that is not running, and curious if I should make this part of my diagnostics? He is dellkng in as is condition, and firm on $7,500 Canadian (partially restored).
