1964 Chevy Impala Posi Rear End Axle Third Member Swap. GM 55-64 8.2" Carrier.

I recently got a great deal on a positraction rear axle from a 1962 Chevy Corvette. I knew that the third member from this Corvette rear axle was interchangeable with the 1955-64 Chevys, so I decided to swap the Posi from it into my 1964 Impala, to get rid of my sad 1 wheel peel. This upgrade was definitely worth the effort.
I began by gathering up the parts needed for the swap:
- Felpro Gasket: RDS 11724
- Two Quarts of 75w-90: amzn.to/2DPX4ni
- Posi / Limited Slip Additive: amzn.to/32qKwgc

That’s awesome! The toughest part is taking the old one out and putting the new one back out because of its weight. If you can overcome the weight of it, and do it safely, you’ll be in good shape!

The ring gear has the numbers stamped on the edge... Ring teeth and pinion teeth. Divide the ring teeth number by the lower pinion number, that yields the ratio. Good idea to tape up the u-joint caps an soon as you can. Otherwise you will learn how many rollers are in there, as you go looking for them on the garage floor. Good idea to rub some gear lube (from each housing) on a finger, go out in the sunlight an see how much "metalflake" if any, is contaminating the assembly. Consider cleaning up the inside of the housing with lacquer thinner... Ideal time to check each axle bearing condition as long as you are in there. Check inside the u-joint caps and see if they are good, if they need some grease, or ( ouch) if they are dry, red and powdery = time bomb. A 9/16 nut is really a 3/8" nut which generally uses a 9/16" wrench... Liked your video, great informative how-to get it done! Thanks.

I have the same rear end on my 63 impala. I'm just curious on how to change the oil. It only has a fill plug no drain plug. Don't tell me I need to drop the entire thing just to drain the oil and fill it back up.
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 3 года назад
I read about people adding their own drain plugs to these, but the easier option is to use suction to get the fluid it out. Harbor freight has a suction tool for doing this that is cheap and I’ve use before. It makes a hell of a mess and you don’t get 100% of the fluid, but you’ll probably get 90%. I have a factory service manual for these cars, I’m now kinda of curious what it says about this. I’ll check in a bit and post an update.

Hey bud question for you, I watched the video again. Does any of the 64 impala have a C-clip on the end of the axle?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 3 года назад
I know that mine did not (and I got my car from the original owner), and neither did the 62 Corvette rear axle that I bought & showed in the video. So I would have to guess none of them did.

Did you use any rtv or just the gasket straight up?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 года назад
I have done this both ways and it seems to work both ways. I’m pretty sure the factory never used RTV (though I could be wrong). The RTV is just a little extra insurance in case there are any pits in the metal, and also helps the gasket stay in place when installing it all. In short, it probably doesn’t matter either way. Do whatever you feel is right ! :)
@mikeberryman5322
@mikeberryman5322 2 года назад
do the axles simply push back in?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 года назад
They do, though I have heard that these axle housings bend sometime and cause the axles to be really difficult to pull out and push back in. So it may be worth doing some measurements to see if your axle housing is still straight.

@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 3 года назад
Thanks! If you buy an original one, it bolts right in. The catch is that they are expensive. I got super lucky and stumbled on one for a crazy cheap price because a guy was cleaning out his shop. Looks on eBay, Craigslist, and the 64 impala group on FB. 57-64 Chevy is basically interchangeable.

Ratty Muscle Car hey bud, beside a corvette rear posi, what else can I look for as model that would fit the rear end of an impala
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 3 года назад
lloyd oliver leonardo - check the 1957 Chevy belairs, the 58-64 impala and biscayne. Technically you may find one called a 55-57 Chevy posi, and that will likely fit too.

can you tell me if I swap my 4.11 carrier to a 3.36 carrier will the ring gear hit the back of the housing ?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 3 месяца назад
It’s my understanding that these cars could have come from the factory with 4:11’s. This makes me think that they should bolt in without any drama. That being said, I’ve never done it. So I don’t know for sure.

Would 3:70 gear ratio be good for a swap ? And also does the rear axle splines count matter for a swap ?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 года назад
The gear ratio depends on your transmission, wheel size, engine, camshaft, type of driving you do, etc. The spline count shouldn't matter, 1957-64 is all the same number of splines as far as I know.

What is this rear rated for HP wise?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 9 месяцев назад
Well, in 1964 you could buy a 64 Impala with a 425hp 409 engine, so I assume it must be rated for that. I’m not entirely sure though.
