Super Alloy 1 contains cadmium. We are working on a 1965 Chevy Chevelle quarter window frame. The shop owner needs to build the corners to add strength to the pot metal. We are using the Super Alloy 1 rod and flux. You will notice in the video that the frame is copper-plated. The old way of soldering pot metal was to copper plate the part as typical solders would not adhere. We could have easily used the Super Alloy 1 on bare pot metal. We broadly heat the pot metal and dip the rod into the flux. Apply the flux and heat until the flux turns brown, and lay the rod in. It's just that simple.
The Super Alloy 1 will solder to copper plating, zinc plating, cadmium plated metals, and of course, bare pot metal. Pot metal is notoriously weak, and it only gets worse throughout its lifetime. We want to build it up to add strength before placing the quarter window frame back into the car. We needed to solder the same section on the opposite side. To prevent the solder from melting, we used Heat Freeze heat absorption paste. The Heat Freeze is fantastic for protecting paint, glass, rubber, wood, plastic, etc. It can mold to almost any surface and be employed in any position. As long as you keep the Heat Freeze clean, you can place it back in the jar and use it over and over.
The torch in the video only had one setting; full blast. Not a problem if that's the only torch on hand. Pull the torch tip back or keep the torch constantly moving to prevent the pot metal from reaching the melting point of 787°F. Watching the flux will prevent the metal from collapsing. If the flux turns black; stop heating the part. Allow the pot metal to cool down, rinse the burnt flux off with warm water and a wire brush and start over.
Electroplaters had always had to copper strike their pot metal parts before the Super Alloy 1 rod and flux was introduced. They are now employing the product to bare zinc and pot metal parts that are pitted, broken in two, bridge missing sections, and more. Clean the flux off of the rod before placing it back into the PVC tube.
