It was 25 years ago when Tom first met David Sosebee and they haven't spoken since. What better way to reunite but over David's most prized possession, a 1965 Ford Fairlane 500 with a 289ci and 4-speed manual transmission. Sit passenger with Tom as he reunites with David and reminisces over the stories of David's father and his significance to the southern racing scene.

You have to get to know the "Old Guys!" They know all the stories of what happened down the road 50-60 years ago. They were probably there when whatever happened. If you get the time to sit down with them, they really appreciate someone who cares enough to talk with them and ask about what they remember. The stories can keep you laughing for hours. My dad just turned 95 years old a month or so ago and we sit out in the barn and talk about when we homesteaded in Alaska in 1949. I was about a year old when we started out there. Those stories never grow old... only we do! ;^)

First car I ever owned, at 15 years old, and no license yet, was a 67' Ford Fairlane 500 with the 289. I did body work on it and chromed a bunch of parts on the engine. Sold it at a profit before I ever got to drive it. Wow, this brings back memories.

Without a doubt my absolute favorite show I've seen. I'll tell you a true story. Lloyd Seay is my grandfather's cousin. Both born in 1919. We still own all of the family property in Ellijay Georgia. Lloyd Seay was shot and killed just a couple of hours after winning in North Carolina by my grandfather's and Lloyd's other cousin Woodrow Anderson. Everyone knows it was over sugar that Lloyd had bought using Woodrow's Credit. What isn't known is how much. Well it was for $2.00. I'm honored that Bill France Sr. Regarded Lloyd Seay as the greatest stock car driver who ever lived. Don't know what it is but engine rund through my entire family's blood. Btw I'm a bit of a Ford man myself. Lloyd Seay was laid to rest in Dawsonville Georgia.

I had one of these cars back in around 1976. It was a baby blue with white interior. 289 HiPo engine with an automatic. I want to say it was a 2 door. While in high school. Bought it for $75 because the guy couldn't get it running. He had a single set of points in a dual point distributor. Factory headers, dual exhaust, 4 bbl, etc. We got it running, and eventually sold it back to the guy for $400. He eventually tried to wrap it around a light pole.

@@PaulBd78 and that's exactly why the middle class was succeeding - higher taxes on mega-rich = help to the lower and middle class = stimulated economy. Reminds me of way to many junk yard owners, that when you ask them what the scoop & price is on some random pile in the back corner ... they always say they got plans real soon for it and it isn't for sale... Never mind the fact that it has a tree growing up through the floor out the front windshield, that is 2 foot in diameter...' Yup, gonna start that real soon like".... LOL
@drubradley8821
@drubradley8821 4 года назад
@John Johnson Sir, You are 100% correct, it is their stuff, BUT, when a guy drives 3 hours to a salvage/junk yard, after, of course calling them, to verify their hours of business, and ask how they sell their stuff, either by the lbs/tons or by title, barter system, etc... and everything you ask a price on, is never for sale... to the point, that you will reach over and just grab something stupid, and ask "sir, how much so you gotta have for this item?" and it is just a piece of scrap nothingness, and even that isn't for sale... only to realize, it was a wasted trip and money, just so some poor bastard can catch an ego trip upon how much junk he has, and in his mind, has people at his feet begging him, a self proclaimed kingship of junk..... There is some mental illness in the salvage/junk yard industry, I kindly say... I have been going to junk yards for 35 years, and there is some, that only intake junk, and nothing ever gets sold, not even roll off containers filled with scrap... they keep it all, but, sure love to waste people time, and money, just so they can show off their junk, and tell you 4 hours of stories of how cool they once were. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy listen for hours these old stories, but one can also tell, that most of those old Katz, are full of it, especially when you hear, that they had to cut the floor pans out of their street racing cars, just so they could see where they were going, purely of course, because they engine was so powerful, never mind the old lacking in traction biased ply tires of the 50's and 60's... My favorite story, is the junk yard owner, who had to weld the heads on, to the block, because he kept snapping head bolts, due to too much compression, LOL.... again, due to so much HP..LOL...

Tom this was excellent !!! I'd like to see a 2 hour video of David telling stories & just imagine (since it's Dawsonville) if you could Bill Elliott to join in, that would be EPIC. (For those who don't know, Bill Elliott will forever be the fastest man in Nascar because he set a top speed record @ Talladega @ over 230mph, pre restrictor plate days.)

My grandma had one of these 65 Fairlanes in white with red interior when I was around 7 years old in the early 70s. She bought it new and had clear seat covers. It was an automatic with manual steering, not sure what motor. It was mint condition when they traded it in for a Dodge Aspen. Never seen another one.

Not the 271hp Hi-Po though....DAMN! SWEET! nonetheless. Guess you could say it's Ford's answer to the 442 ('64)......but instead of it being, '4-speed, 4-barrel, dual exhaust', it's 4-speed, 4 DOORS, & dual exhaust!

My father ran a 1949 Ford, back in Southeast Missouri, Racing and hauling Moonshine was just part of life..... I remember the 1962 Ford Galaxie 500, 428/4 speed....Black with Red Interior, my best of Memories! Will President Trump bring these days back?

Had the same car, 289 4Bbl 10:1comp., 225HP 4speed, dual exhaust, bench seat, four door, Prairie Bronze. Great car, it would get 20MPG if you didn't drive over about 65-70 then the four barrel opened and mileage dropped. We ordered it special, I wanted a Mustang but when we found out the 225HP 4 spd could be special ordered in a Fairlane, Dad said that was it. Dad traded it in on a Buick after I went in the Army!

Love the fact that you are in my area!!! I'm in Opelika, Al and know of a few cars around here, in fact I have a 1968 Dodge D100 Custom that was purchased new by my Pawpaw, it has 63,000 original miles, would show it to ya Tom if you were still in the area. How about a barn find boat? Got one of them also. 1962 Span America!!!

That race track designed into the hillside is just like the dream at Lime Rock, Conn. Also Just after WWII, pre SCCA. The main straight run off would have been part of the hillside road course. I believe the New England hurricane of 1955 ended that dream. Thanks Tom👍✌️☕🏆🏁
