1965 Ford Galaxie 500 R-Code 427 Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #160
Some Ford Galaxies were meant to be family cars... you know, smooth riding, quiet, fairly efficient utility cars indented to get the family from "A" to "B" with minimal fuss and in comfort. This one, however, is a little different. It's still a pretty comfortable ride, but thanks to it's no-frills package and dual-quad 427 and 4-speed driveline, you get to "B" much faster! From The Brothers Collection.

I had a friend in 1968 who had a unique Mustang. He had bought a Galaxie in 66 that had a 427 side oiler in it. He totalled the car in 67, bought the engine back from the insurance co. and installed it in a 68 fastback Mustang. I didn't understand much about cars back then, but I remember the two 4 barrel carburetors sitting on top and the fact that he had to wire the hood down. That was the fastest car I ever rode in. I don't EVER remember the car getting beat in drag races. It was the first car that was able to pull wheelies that I ever rode in. Ah, what a great time to be alive.

I'm a Mopar guy but this car is one of my absolute favorites that I've seen in the Brother's collection so far and Ive seen every single MCotW video since they started making them. I love the no nonsense sleeper look of it and it's a great color too. This has gotta be my favorite Ford in the collection possibly with the exception of the Wimbledon White 66 R-Code 427 Fairlane

Yes, I would get excited about a C3AE 6007 HE 361 T! Forty plus years as a Ford Parts Specialist and STILL remember basic part numbers such as 6007 (engine Assy), 6009 (engine short block), 6303 (crank), 6250 (camshaft) etc. Also NHRA drag racer for many seasons during the 60's, 70's and 80's. Boss 302 Mustangs, 289 HP 271 HP Stangs, 67, 69 428CJ Stangs and Fairlanes in Stock Eliminator. Even ran a 200 cubic inch 6 popper in a 1971 Maverick and a 1972 Pinto 2000CC 4 popper in W/S that jerked the left front wheel EVER so slightly upon it's rocket ship type launches! Lol! Even the prefix and suffix entries of Ford's part numbers display info regarding the originating year of production as well as production type of vehicle it was originally installed in.

My era. At the time the 'Stang was my thing, but looking back, this car would have better suited me. When Ford started putting the 427 in the Fairlane, the lighter weight made for an even quicker ride down the 1320. And I LOVE that body style. A friend of mine had a '69 Chevelle SS396. Another GREAT looking car. And quick to boot. Those WERE the days.

Not so many '65 Galaxies exist these days since most have been wrecked and crushed for their steel content. They didn't handle like sports cars and young guys who drove wild in them soon discovered trees, telephone poles and other cars could ruin their day.

Very tough looking full size muscle car, the XL 65-66s competed with the Impala SS. I had a 66 XL for 18 years. Mine was warmed over 390 to 400 hp, was a fun car to drive and turned best 13.70s @ almost 100 mph. Traction was a issue or I think I could of dropped my 60ft to about 1.7s not 2 0s and ran low 13s maybe high 12s. Those tires need to go like mine, drag radials would work. These cars are underrated. In 66 the Galaxies were running 185 mph at the Daytona 500 on the straight ons, real stock cars unlike the plastic jellybean cars today

The '65 Galaxie used in the TV commercial to compare to Rolls Royce for smoothness and quiet running was the LTD model with the 289 c.i. V8 and 3 speed Cruise-O-Matic transmission. My '65 Galaxie 500 convertible has the factory 300 h.p. 390 c.i. V8 and Cruise-O-Matic and has never been overhauled. It now has 93,000 total miles on it and still runs great and smooth.

I have a 65 Galaxie 500 FAST BACK, 352 4V,to be replaced if $ last by a Big Bear up graded 65 side oiler 427 with an aluminum block(125 lbs) I'm restoring. Wow what a project, because so few parts are out there for the 65 Galaxie. The interior can be put back original by Auto Krafters, Mac, and a few other places, but to find the front fenders Galaxie 500 metal emblems is so far, an on going search. This car was the First Ford to have in dash air conditioning and mine has it and NO rust, is why I'm keeping it. I've yet to find one with in dash air. With 160K on it, the underneath looks new being a South west car. The downsides the dash is toast and the steering wheel, plus its missing its center cap. By diligent searching, I've found a good lower dash and steering wheel. Next the quarter panels have some damage a body shop seems to think can be fixed 100% because that's the only way to restore a car. One bad thing though, when you take one of these awesome Fords to a high end body shop for these common repairs they shit their diapers when you ask is they can unbolt the fenders, replace a front door,(12 bolts) etc. because this new age,has lost so many good craftsmen by so called body shops only repairing the plastic shit mobiles of today and doing ins.claims, they don't deserve body shop and repair on their sign. By 2020 it should be back 100% or damn close.

Even the 390 version was a fun ride. And they were everywhere ... By 1970 they were just cheap used cars. Yeah, but there were plenty go fast parts, and as long as you had a stick, they'd fly. Good on the street on big Atlas Plycron tires. Could get maybe 3,000 miles out of set of rears, unless you raced every night :D

I would get several Car model kits from the older Brother where the 61-64 full size Ford kept that horizontal quad head light look as it lost the fins but couldn't shake that rear light that was to look like a jet exhaust exit duct as the front fenders carried the headlight bulge to the door area . Most of the car Model kits came from the Promo versions out of Detroit and were often injected with the exact color of plastic as you would see in the dealer Show Room for their Promo's in different colors. Then I got a 1965 Galaxie 500 XL as a 3-in-1 Kit for Stock with lots of trim, street rod with lots of chrome and mag wheels , or the NASCAR version with the decals and bare interior that was what the NASCAR looked like. I liked the large tail lights and sharp angled fenders and the new stacked quad front lights with a semi eye brow as the recessed lights gave the side profile a leaning forward look for speed. My neighbor had bought a new 1965 Galaxie 500 in White with red inside plus her got a new car every few years and bought a white 1967 LTD with red inside . There was another full size Ford I really like in 1965 which was the Country Squire wagon I saw in late 65 as another neighbor bought the year end left over as the 1966 came out. These were a big change for FORD in 1965 and the designers must have known that they needed another 1949 success story to keep the full size car product that same but in new skin with a loud rear area . The space race pushed the jet-age look into History while the Galaxie badge from 1959 was still alive. I liked the 1966 LTD but as for a Squire I would take the 1965 . Nice R-code to look like a family 2 door hardtop or Government car with a 240 CID inline 6 . But that secret dies fast when you smoke the tires from the Light and chirp them in 2nd and 3rd while the drivers behind you get a car load of fresh rubber scent from Detroit .

Being 72, this guys full of it. My 65 Galaxie 500 fast back FE 352 4 v with the c-6 and a/c weights only 3320 lbs. 2nd these 65 fastback 427's ran low 12's and high 11's with only -7-8 inch slicks and no other mods. If you put a 4:56 rear end, then your in low 11's or high 10's. 3rd, If you tried to launch with those skinny ass tire the only place you'd go would be in a ditch or circles. Also the shift points were approx 7000 rpms or more. Not the 6000 set on the tach because they ALL had solid liter cams and were high reving engines. Mine was shifted at 7500 and would go easily to 8,000..

Wholly shyt ...its Bad ass! I thought those cars looked so good when they came out. I was a kid then. A lot of Hot rodders then were setting them up as semi low riders meaning slightly lowering the rear and adding fender skirts which was an option from the factory. The skirt gave it that long low look. Dual exhaust pipes with chromed tips would be a finishing touch. You may have seen something like this if in fact you were around in '65. i.pinimg.com/originals/7b/23/1d/7b231df9f46317531f3e8b86e5bc084b.jpg

Mopar guy forever, but I tell u whut, that's one godamned nice Ford... I had a 67 Galaxie 500, for a winter beater, that I bought in 1982, for 250(!) bucks one night, while having a few beers in the tavern next to the tiny used car lot... it was a 2 door, 390 two Barrel, had 2 broken motor Mounts, (why the old timer gave it up so cheap)and it did OK for the one Milwaukee winter I drove it through... cleaned it up, fixed the mounts, and got 650 for it, from an older guy and his grey haired wife, in a black suit, with a briefcase, he never questioned the money... but did he have religious stuff packed in that briefcase, tried to get me Saved when he came to get the car... I didn't care, more than doubled my money, I think I turned right around, and bought a 1971, 383 Roadrunner with that cash, and a bit more... god, what fun, buying these great old Detroit Iron specials, for less than a grand... oh for a time machine, and a million bucks... nice Ford, thanks for the video... loved your '69, black on black, Hemi R/T Charger... what a truly incredible, museum grade, million+ dollar car... had to change shirts 5 times, from all the Drool...!!! Cheers...
