1966 Ford Fairlane R-Code 427 Lightweight - Muscle Car Of The Week Video #56:
What happens when you mix a lightweight body with a high-powered 427? Ford set out to find out with this 1966 Fairlane, and the results were awesome. This 1966 Ford Fairlane R-Code 427 Lightweight does not look like anything special, being completely devoid of racy looking stripes or fancy trim, but the giveaway is the scooped lift-off hood and the discreet 427 badges on the fenders. This car is boasting lightweight aluminum and fiberglass panels from front to back, and has been assembled without creature comforts inside. However, it was fitted with the R-Code dual 4-barrel side-oiler 427, a 425 HP race engine for the street. The R-Code rumbles thanks to the high compression pistons and lumpy cam, and the 4-speed manual box and 3.89 gears help it get out of the hole. Which is what this car was designed to do, in the form of Super Stock drag racing. Ford only built 57 of these in 1966, and this one lives among many other unique and low-production factory racers in the Brothers Collection.

I worked in the Louisville Kentucky rail yards in the summer of 1966. We offloaded Fords from rail cars (auto racks) for delivery in the Midwest by truck. We received a few white 427 Fairlanes from the Georgia (I think.) assembly plant. They were all designated for race teams. I may have driven this car when it was new.

Love the look of the stacked headlights on this era of Fords. Two of my roommates had a Galaxy and the other a Mercury. I had my 57 Chevy and constantly got my clock cleaned at the 'night races' on the weekends. Great memories....most importantly with great friends.

Good luck finding one no matter how much money you have. Ford didn't gain any fans 50 years ago by keeping a tight lid on retail high performance engines for the general public. You damn near had to have a friend inside of a high volume Ford dealer to get the inside track on special orders back then. GM, on the other hand, would put an LS6 into a Chevy station wagon if you wanted to order it that way. Ford: "Look at this totally awesome engine that will destroy almost anything on the street. I think we'll build 6 of them"............F'ing retarded, man.

scdevon I understand what your saying but I don't want some dime a dozen GM. The old GM's held there own and I do like some of them but the old Ford's are my thing. I know they are rare and hard to come find but that is not going to stop me from owning one. I also like the 61' Starliner.

I had one of these cars. Serial # 6A43R249575. Drove it for 30,000+ miles on the street and never at the drag strip. On the street I only lost to one Hemi, which had 4.56 gears, and one 435 hp Corvette. It got 11.6 mpg on the highway if I drove it at 65 mph. The distributor was transistorized, which made it tough to get a tach which was compatible. It had front disc brakes, the only Ford that had them in 1966. It came with 3.91 gears, 31 spline axles and a Ford 4-speed toploader trans. The car was a Fairlane 500 2 dr ht, and had a nice black vinyl full width front seat, and a full back seat. Also had an AM radio. Full carpeted interior. I worked for a division of Ford at the time and a fellow coworker was the original owner. He had 4 cars total, and was in the process of getting a divorce. I took over payments of $106 per month. I sold the car after two years, for no good reason. Engine pulled 7000 rpms in every gear, including 4th. The cam was a 324-advertised duration unit, with solid lifters. The only fiberglass part was the hood, which was held down with 4 hood pins. there was a "belly pan" under the hood scoop which fit down over the twin Holly 652-cfm carbs and sealed them from underhood heat. Was a fantastic car to drive on the street.

A friend of mine had a '66 GT with a 390 4-speed from the factory. He built an R code 427 and installed it. His dad specialized in Fords at his auto shop. I got to ride in the car with the 427 in it. He taped a 20 bill to the dash and dared me to grab it when he got on it with both carbs opened up in second gear. I was planted in the bucket seat and could not raise up enough to grab the 20 bill. He still has the car but with the 390 back in it. I am a Chevy guy but I will always remember riding in his Fairlane GT.

The 390 runs on regular gas whereas the 427 requires premium. If you drive much it really adds up. And my '65 390 single 4bbl has plenty of power.

I saw one of these at the Syracuse Nationals last summer. Yes rare car. I have a set of the exhaust manifolds that fit these and Comets on my 56 Victoria with a 428. I got them cheap at $800.00 in the 90s

Unlike the ridiculous looking crap they build today. In the 60’s, you might be sitting at a red light next to a plain Jane Fairlane with a 200-6, a 289-8, or a 427 side oiler, and maybe couldn’t tell the difference externally (dog dish hubcaps, bench seat interior, etc). In the navy, they called boats like that “q ships”-nothing to indicate the heavy weaponry stashed aboard, just a normal looking freighter. But get an enemy ship in sight, and the big guns come out. Now base model cars have ridiculous scoops and wings plastered all over them, screaming “LOOK AT MEEEEEE!!”

I used to care for a boat with two side oiler 427's and it was always hard starting even in good tune, when I put in a crane HI ignition it would start so fast and idle at 450 rpm in gear, all these cars needed much more spark . thus the modern coil on plug ignition.

Know a guy with a 67 Fairlane R-code. 427 Medium-riser. Post car. He owned and raced it in the 60's, found it and bought it back in the early 90's. Google image Expressway Gulf. The white fully lettered 63 Galaxy is also his. A replica lightweight of the original which he also owned and raced.

That painted steel wheel look with the dog dish hubcaps is awesome. You could put those bias ply tires up in flames with one tap of the gas pedal. Stock for stock, there wasn't much on the street that could touch this car 50 years ago. Good luck coming out of the hole with 500 lb. feet of torque and those shitty tires back then.

Thank you for this one. Though not nearly as exotic my 11th grade ride in 1973 was a 67 Fairlane that was oddly optioned. A bit of a "cream puff" in near perfect shape with 47k miles it was a 289 hi-po with a top loader 4 speed ps, pb silver over black with buckets and a console. No factory racecar but a capable red light racer. I loved that car but being a brainless kid after a year sold it to buy a Healy 3000 that lived in the shop! Thanks for giving the overlooked Fairlane some love.

Not sure about 600+, but DEFINITELY more than 425 hp from the factory. One of the VERY FEW engines of that era that we're on the level of the Chrysler 426 Hemi. I would take a 63-67 R-Code Fairlane or Galaxie over ANY Mustang or other Ford muscle cars of that era

@@jeremythompson9895 the 427's had more time than 450 hp. The 1966 Ford GT40' mark II's 427 were de-tuned to 485 hp. The 1966-67 427 R code medium risers had 12.5 to 1 compression, not 11.5. I wish these guys could get it right.

Really sweet. I owned one of the 57 built. Bought it cheap and sold for huge price. Only criticism I have is incorrect grill, radio delete in those. Front dual piston disc brakes and holes in inner fender wells to get to spark plugs. Oh, the grill had no Fairlane circle.

The '66 Ford Fairlanes are the main reason so many guys tell me "Nice Fairlane" when I drive my '65 Ford Galaxie convertible. It happens a lot. No big. I always set them straight.

I wanted the 427 in the 66 Comet Cyclone I bought new but the factory would only warrantee the big engine for 90 days so I got the 390 instead.

ROBERT snyder -- I bought a 66 Comet Cyclone GT conv. In 1971 that was raced and on its 3rd engine. The shock towers were banged in for a big engine. I drove across this beautiful country with a 289.

I friend I know in pa bought a hemi Cuba. Yes hemi Cuba and friends of his got killed driving like dickheads and his dad would not let him pick up the car he was 18 made him buy a plumb purple Cuba 340 he lost money on the deal and it took the dealer a year to sell the hemi car

My first trip to the dragstrip in my 1970 Dodge Challenger 440 Six-Pak I burned off the whole quarter mile end to end. Those factory F70-14's were cooking at the end and I only clocked a measely 15 sec. time. All that was to change.

Those crappy wheels and tires were only meant to get the car home so you could put REAL aftermarket wheels and tires on it.Those dog dish ones had no other purpose and I really hate the look they give...just my two cents. Love the car from Ray in Michigan

My grandfather had a Fairlane but said it had the police motor. All I recall is the 289. Was there a engine between 289 and 427?

It reminds me of my first car I paid $75.00 for. And believe me when I tell you it looked like a $75.00 car. Mine was '68 Fairlane with a 200 cid straight six. Not sure of the horse power, but that engine was so worn out I had to clean and regap the plugs every few hundred miles. I bought it in 1982 so it really wasn't that old, but someone had treated that car badly. I've always thought the 66 overshadows the 68 and I personally think the 68 is the better looking of the two. Unfortunately I ended up blowing the engine cruising south on I-5 and then put a 302 cid in it's place and it screamed until I destroyed the transmission, so I scrapped it after that. And there is the story of my first car. Oh yeah, it was that very pale green with a darker green interior. Awful colors in my opinion.

WE ALL HEARD about & desired these, R CODES,INTERCEPTOR PACKAGES, SEVEN LITER,etc**! ..interestingly, I bought a (* actually Parents did, I was second year in Pharmacy School, & broke)a1966** GALAXIE *500/XL **4SPD/3524V (* booo) in 1967: at great Price.. Anyways,always wanted R codes,427,( or even 7 L) , FORD PERFORMANCE,or even one of the FAIRLANE/4Spd289, .....actulally 66GALAXIE WORKED out to,be Ok, & easily improved/ etc.!!!

There was a enterprise loaded with 55 56 57 63 64 65 66’s and lot more here in Humble Tx, now closed it’s hard to locate any of these cars in Texas unless you can pay big money for these cars

And people say the Ford Y-Block wasn't a good design. In 1957, the 312 cubic inch Y-Block with one four barrel carburetor and MaCullogh compressor from the factory made more than 1 hp by cubic inch. A little better than this 9 years newer FE V8, with dual quads, and huge cam. I'm a die herd Ford guy, but my favorite enf=gine was, is and always will be the Y-Block.

The Y block to me is in the same category as the flathead V8...historically interesting but not really in demand because they were superseded by better designs. I had a 292/4 barrel .

Y-blocks are great if you don't mind constant rear main leaks, sure. FE is vastly superior in every way.

Ford could have dominated the muscle car era if they hadn't been so damn stingy with performance engine production. They made a "few of these and a few of those". 90% of Mustangs ever made had 2 barrel engines under the hood which should have never happened. The BASE engine in any Mustang should have been a 289 4 barrel or a 302 4 barrel depending on the year with an aggressive stock cam and exhaust to compliment the improved carburetion all the way up to a full balls out high performance big block AS MANY AS YOUR DEALER WANTED TO ORDER. Ford's reputation on the street sucked 50 years ago and they could have easily fixed it by building and marketing more performance V8s.

I certainly agree......the other thing that held Ford back was trying to do more with less cubes! Or not making heads that could flow the air that GM and Mopar did. Guess it is better today as Ford is more willing to experiment with turbos, superchargers, mult-valve engines, etc...... Of course, all the car companies make some hot stuff today.....

3:57,"they ran mid 14's at just over 100mph in the quarter mile" So,you've got this huge gas guzzling V-8,with a wild cam and special gearing rear-end all bolted to a stripped down car and it still is not as fast as a factory stock 1987 Buick Grand National with a V-6 and A/C and automatic transmission and got 23mpg on the highway. And the Buick uses regular pump gas and not airplane fuel to run.

This was in the 60's not 1987! Zero electronics and no turbo! That's called NATURALLY ASPIRATED DOPE! THE HORSEPOWER RATING WAS A JOKE ALSO! TAKE THE POWER ADDER OFF AND WHAT DO YOU HAVE? A SIX CYLINDER THAT CANT GET OUT OF IT'S OWN WAY! OLD SCHOOL BIG BLOCK FORDS ARE THE WAY TO GO

The Ford engineers did not intend for these cars to use those 5.5" wheels. They delivered these drag racing cars with cheap rolling stock because they would be tossed out immediately. Originality is fine, but a car like this should wear better shoes.

Ford made a huge styling mistake on these cars, by making the fenderwells too small. Little 14" wheels are all that will fit.

@Littleblockfox 90 Yeah, I'm not a ford guy, but if they had made the fender openings as big as a Chevelle, the styling on the 66/667 models would have been hard to beat.

There were 57 R-Code lightweights built, which were not 500 XLs. This is a lightweight car.

@@V8TV I have one that I bought in GA for $500 several years ago, but it came with no engine, no interior or transmission and basically stripped down to basically a bare shell car with windows. It's now burgundy with black XL interior and powered by a Kaase 460 engine and modified C6 A/T, but still has the 3:89 Detroit Locker gears rear. I converted it to 4 wheel power disc brakes.

@@V8TV I also have a 1967 Ford Fairlane 4 speed 427 XL/GT that was built in-house by TASCA Ford that I bought new, It's Candy Apple red with black interior. Bob Tasca Sr and his sons built the car themselves.

I don’t think this is a true R code! The 427R code only had 59 cars produced! The Fairlane 500 stood for 500 factory models of that same car produced.

John, price of these cars are in the 1/4 million range and they deserve it as they are rarest of the NASCAR program cars which did require 500 made in later years as things got more exotically out there, The 500 referenced Daytona and Atlanta in which these cars won many of the 500 mile races despite petty

I have 66 fairlane 500 gt convertible. 271 hp 289 cu in 4 speed. I also have 3 z 28s 2 firebirds and a 78 v8 monza. The fairlane is my favorite
