What a gorgeous car! I'm so glad Corvairs are finally getting noticed and appreciated! 140HP was optional on all 1965-1969 Corvairs (except 1965 Greenbrier). These cars are so much fun! I just added a '66 Monza convertible to my Corvair fleet! Great video!

Spot on. The 1967 Camaro was meant to be a direct-line replacement for the 1966 Corvair (the highest-horsepower Corvair up to then) but when Ralph Nader started squawking (incorrectly, in the Corvair's case) GM released the Camaro AND kept the Corvair going for three more years (through 1969) to spite him.

I think Corvairs are becoming more and more popular. This is a beautiful example. I saw a video of Tony Dow (Wally on Leave it to Beaver) and his Corvair. He has a license plate frame that says "Unsafe at any Speed". Gee Mr. Nader, why would you write a crummy book like that? These are great cars. Thanks for sharing as always, Lou!

I have never been much of a Corvair fan, but this one is a beautiful car. When I was a kid my mothers friend and her husband bought a new ‘69 Monza hardtop. Everyone in town gave them a hard time for buying an “orphan”. I remember that they got a certificate from GM good on the purchase of another new GM car.

I have a 1966 Corvair Monza 4 door hardtop with factory A/C and the "high Performance" 110-hp flat 6. Great car, comfortable, fast, and easy to fix. This was the ONLY 4 door hardtop every offered in the U.S. in the compact car class, all other compact 4 doors were pillared sedans.

Very nice convertible. I had one back in the day , it was a 65 white ht with red interior. It had the 140 hp eng. with the manual trans. I put over-sized tires and chrome wheels on it and it looked great. It ran very well and was fast. I loved this car . It was fun to drive , it got a lot of looks . I think Ralph Nader didn't know what he was talking about when he was condemning these cars. I certainly loved mine and dont regret a single minute with her. Great video , keep them coming . The '63 Monza convertible I owned in the late '60's was deep metallic burgundy, factory color, with black interior and a black top. As I was living in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the time, I always had to place thick towels on the seats when the top was down during the summer months. And with the black top up, you roasted in traffic as well. This guy was very wise to have a white top.

Corvairs were way ahead of their time, the second-gen models cured most of the first-gen problems....strong unibody, flat floor gave lots of interior room, good gas mileage, decent performance with the 140/4-speed and 3.55 Posi rear. I had a stock Corsa that did quite well in autocrossing, and another Corsa that I swapped a built 327 L79 into the rear seat, giving a mid-engine car with a 2600 lb. weight, and around 400 HP. MANY 396 Chevelles, Goats, Road Runners, Boss Mustangs, you name it, were humbled by "a lowly Corvair". :-)
@scootergeorge9576
@scootergeorge9576 5 лет назад
The mid engine, 2 seat Corvair conversion is a great car but a non starter with GM. The Corvette was, by policy, the ONLY sports car. Problem with the Corvair, it was a bit too "different." Did not really succeed as an economy car. And the flat 6 with Power-glide was a slug. Not all that fuel efficient too. That's the reason the Chevy II was introduced. Corvair was a hit briefly as a sporty car but Mustang stole its thunder. People believed a performance car had to have a V8. This one sounds healthy! Is that the factory camshaft?

2nd gen Corvairs were so sexy compared to the boxy 1st gens. The 4 speed coupled with the 140hp engine must be a thrilling ride (Powerglide trans in Corvairs are pure agony). My guess on the weights is GM engineers were so sensitive to Nader’s charges, they wanted to make sure the lighter weight convertible with the high performance engine and transmission would not do weird cornering things. I especially like all the Corsa badging inside and out. Another great car story, Lou!

Haven't seen one of these in a long while Lou. The Mustang stole any luster that the upmarket Monzas and Corsa Corvairs had during this period. The Corsa replaced the Monza Spyder at the 65 redesign of the Corvairs. The post models were discontinued. The Corvair 500 and Monza were offered in 2 and 4 door pillarless hardtops. The Monza also offered a convertible.

Those "weights" aren't dead weights. They're special dampers with internal springs and oil. If you take one out and give it a gentle bounce on the ground you can feel the internal workings. Each one weighs about 25 lbs. They're unique to the second generation Corvair convertibles. They were also incorporated into the early Camaro's as well.

All '65-'69 Corvair convertibles have the weights. Even gen 1 Camaros have the weights.

@@estpst GM fixed all the problems Ralph Nader complained about starting with the '64 models transleaf spring, and then completely made Ralph's claims null by the redesigned '65-'69 rear suspension. The weights were to absorb the vibrations caused by no hardtop support, nothing to do with safety.

Initial look the convertible should have the turbocharger but I see a regular tail pipe exhaust. So with the dual exhaust you have the 4 one barrels. My dad one 65 also red but not a convertible with the 4-speed.

As far as I could see, the Chevy "bow-tie" appeared in only one place, a tiny specimen in that badge on the grill. That's odd

Those "weights" are like a dead blow hammer. They were used on many compact GM convertibles. I own a '65 Monza convertible.

Wonder why he has his boot attached to the top? It looks silly to see those foam pads hanging down in the rear window when the top's up. Why not store it in the trunk? That's what I do.

When I was about 8 or 9 my church group went to the mountains, I was riding in a convertible Corvair that belonged to one of the advisors, it vapor locked in the fuel line and I remember sitting there for hours while they changed the fuel pump 😂😂😂

Nobody understands what the weights are for, convertibles tend to have body flex and shake when hitting slight bumps in the road and the weights counter balance body shake and make a smother ride and that's why the counter weights in this Corvair .

Yes. The Corvair is actually a safe car if you follow the recommended tire inflation.
