I had the pleasure of owning the 396/ 375 . What a bad ass , I had it balanced and blueprinted. I owned it for five years, and would turn it 7500 regularly. I remember missing 3rd gear once when I was powershifting and the needle went way up. But I never hurt that engine. I had it in a 62 bubble top .. I think of it real often

We just bought one a month ago. My wife has wanted one for years and now she's got her dream car. IT'S a real 138 code car. 427 4 speed dark blue car. She will have fun driving it this summer. I encourage anyone wanting a muscle car to bite the bullet and not hesitate and get one. They are a once in a lifetime investment that you will never regret.

The 325 and 350 HP 396 engines had hydraulic lifters and the actual horsepower was a bit higher. The 375 HP engine had a LOT more horsepower than Chevy claimed, however it had solid lifters which required regular adjustment to run well. It sounded different too.
@rolandgard6984
@rolandgard6984 Год назад
Solid lifters would drown out your radio if you got the 375hp.The 375hp was definitely not a family car.
@ke8qll400
@ke8qll400 Год назад
They actually need little adjustment. And if done right you can't even tell its a solid.
@carlschilling1951
@carlschilling1951 Год назад
Plus the 375 hp had 11-1 compression! Took higher octane gas like “Sunoco 260“ which was like 110 octane if my memory serves me right.
@otisbailey5455
@otisbailey5455 6 месяцев назад
I own true 67 SS with 375 rated but much more closer to 430 hp. Comp Cams has a hydraulic lifter cam that mimics the solid lifter version. 3rd gear matted will get your attention.

The 402 had actually a slightly larger bore than the 396. Chevy started using them in late '69, but still marketed them as a 396. The tach showed is a factory option, nicknamed the "blinker tach".

Nice car. I used to have a 70 SS light blue with black stripes, white interior, 375 HP which was solid lifter, auto, shift kit, high stall conv etc., with 4:10 dif. I thought I wanted to get another one but I have since changed my mind. I am now 66 yrs of age and would like to get a more subtle vehicle, yet still very nice looking car. My brother had a 67 SS dark blue, blue interior, 325 HP that he had modified and with new paint. etc. His was a stick. I would like to get a mix of the two. A 67 big block with an auto, with similar specs, that I had. Some day soon I hope. I love the 67 as much as the 70. Great memories of with both of them.

My dad bought one back in 19 67 when I was 2 years old bought it off the showroom floor at Fred Bauer Chevrolet we had that car the whole time I lived with my parents and then they decided to sell the car when I was probably 23 or 25 I can't remember sold it to a guy my dad worked with and his wife was out driving it around when she ended up totaling it out sure made me sad to hear that cuz I love the hell out of that car I even got my driver's license in that car anyway nice to see a nice 67 Chevelle still around take care of yours they are indeed a badass car my dad also had a knack for 60 series Camaros 56 Chevy 2 door hardtops he owned 13 of them not all at once but throughout his lifetime and the old 60 series Chevy pickups last car that he built was a 62 Chevy two-door Impala convertible brought it home on a trailer looking like it was ready to be scrapped and when he was done with it looked like it rolled off the showroom floor he loved building cars but the Chevelle he bought brand new and it's funny our Chevelle looked exactly like the one you got pretty color blue and with the same mags except for dads had a bench seat and an automatic and all black interior

My dream car. My dad had one. Marina blue with a black vinyl roof. He said it was dynoed at 425hp. We went camping one year to Bowling green Kentucky in this, pulling a pop up trailer. 5 kids in the back and my baby brother on my mom's lap. My dad said that he used to play a game with the guys that he carpooled with. He'd put a 20 dollar bill on the console. If someone in the back seat could grab it while he shifted through the gears, then they could keep it. Apparently nobody could. The previous owner was the head mechanic at the Chevy dealer, so it had lots of extras and a beautiful sounding Thrush muffler system. I always remember the sound of the car downshifting while I lay in bed, as my dad rolled into town from the Chrysler plant in Windsor. Nice memories. The replacement car after this was a '73 Plymouth Fury wagon. Talk about lunchbag letdown. Lol.

I was 2 years old in 1967, but I also remember from various GM cars of the era, the silver colored sill, stepping on it or stepping over it. Also burning my legs on the vinyl seats (Florida-raised), super Ice Cold Air Conditioning, windows down on nice days, laying in the back tray, playing on the floor of the backseat, the red and white door lights that came on when door opened at night, working the power windows on some cars. Endless memories, great times.

I owned a '67 Chevelle SS 396, L34, rated at 350 HP, 780 cfm Holley dual feed carb., Air Lift shocks, sun super tach, hurst 4-speed shifter, muncie M-20 transmission, with traction bars, the car was Balero Red, with red bucket seat interior, I ran Keystone deep dish mag wheels, the car had the white pinstripping, although subtle! The car was a freakin' chix magnet!

When to Modesto High School with the Lucas brothers in the early 1970's. They had the baddest assed car at our school- a '67 Chevelle SS, 396, 4 speed, blue with black buckets. Motor was built by Rettig Brothers in Modesto, CA. That car was F.A.S.T. Don't know what happened to the brothers and that car after high school.

I remember my little league baseball coach would take us to the Dairy Queen in his Blue 1967 Chevelle Super Sport. I loved sitting in the front seat and watching him chirp the tires as he banged thru the gears. My memory of his car is from 1969-70 so his car was a couple years old during this time. I have never been inside a 67 chevelle super sport since that time but its funny how some memories just stay with you. Always loved the lines on a 67 SS Chevelle because of that memory.

I installed the tach where yours was because I liked that on the 67 SS. I had the 4:11 rear that showed 2000 at 40 and 3000 at 60. M21 Muncie sounded great. Thanks so much for taking me back 50 years! Built a 69 vet after that with the same color and rally wheels. Now have a frame off restored 87 Buick Grand National that is methanol powered. NICE RIDE! My favorite muscle car of all... I owned a 1967 Malibu with a 400 small block which is not the same as a 396, 427 or 454 big block... A 400 small block has the big block type crank stroke and larger pistons than a 283, 327 or 350.. My Malibu also had a turbo 400 trans 4:11 spool rear with weld wheels... Pulled 12s to 13s in the quarter mile... I miss it & will have one again... Currently I am restoring a 1967 Camaro SS!

My dad had a 65 SS with a 300hp 327 and 4spd muncie that unfortunately rotted away in their backyard over 40 years but i was able to salvage the engine and trans! Had one as a teenager in 73. To beautiful of a car for a teen, Loved it but beat it to the ground without having the money at that age to repair my stupidities. LOL. Bought it for 1000.00, sold it in 76-77 for 350.00. The Crager wheels I had on it were worth more than that. The 396 was a very fast motor and unless you have driven it you don't understand that kick or jump he is talking of. The torque in the engine was a monster. In comparison, I now have a 69 427 400 corvette. Sorry but that 396 would have kicked this vettes ass if we were racing first one to 100 mph. My Chevelle struggled to go over 110 mph, but got there faster than anything I raced. Wish I still had it, memories for sure.

Just found your channel and it brought back memories. While in the Air Force in Tucson, Arizona I ran across a 1966 SS396 Chevelle. Being I never owned a big block I jumped at it. I later purchased another two 1966's and a 1967. All SS396 4 speed bucket seat console cars. All were less than 6 years old so totally untouched and unmodified. Back then guys actually used these as their everyday work cars! The 325hp ones had Rochester carbs. One was a 360hp (I thought at the time but probably 350) and was a hydraulic cam oval port head two bolt main with a cast iron intake and Holley 4160. I thought someone had added the Holley but did not have a carb adapter and looking at the fuel lines it was obvious it was factory. It probably had a slightly hotter cam from the factory because it was much quicker on the quarter mile than the 325hp. With the lousy factory shifter grinding gears and spinning bald street tires it ran 14.80's. Today I prefer the 1967's. First year of the dual master and disc brakes with rallye wheels. Thanks for the memories!

I could write a novel, book, or something on this subject. I have read every comment and oh the memories I/we have with this particular car. I can relate to all of them even to the sound of the closing door. I bought my "Marina Blue" 67 SS 4 speed Chevelle in 71 for $1,100 and immediately bought a 375 horse 396 out of a 69 Chevelle that my friend pulled to put in a 427. I did all the known things that could be done to a motor back then to make it as fast as possible and still be able to drive it on the street. Never got beat by any one. I could walk off and leave the supposedly fastest cars in town. Only one that beat me was the police a few times. lol. I let a friend drive the car once and he came back with a blown up motor and blown clutch. I put a 428 Pontiac in it for a while, had a really hot 327 for a while, had a 427 with a turbo 400 out of a 69 police car for a while. As with so many stories, life got in the way and I parked it and was always going to get back to it and restore it to its former glorious memories that I had in my mind. It sat for 28 years (in New Mexico so it didn't rust) before I finally got started on the restoration. I pulled the body off, sand blasted the frame and painted it black. I completely rebuilt the suspension and brake system and had the bottom of the car painted and looking beautiful!. If only the top of the car looked as nice as the bottom does! Then again another life thing and into storage went the Chevelle for another 10 years. Pulled it out about 2 years ago and had it in my garage and was getting things moving along pretty good and 4 months ago Hurricane Harvey decide everything I owned needed to go swimming. My house, shop, my 6 other cars, my Chevelle, everything I owned was under 15 feet of water and left everything covered in 6 inches or more of mud. The Chevelle got hosed off the best I could get it and it now sits at my son's house waiting for me to decide what to do with it. My one thing that I don't have to regret is I didn't get rid of it. I sold dozens of Camaros, Corvettes, Chevelles and many other cars, but I held on to this one. Soon I will get things back together in life and jump back on the 67 and get it back on the road!!!! Lots of other things and memories are running through my head but I will spare you. Book? I warned you!!! lol..

Really enjoyed your video. I am currently restoring the 1967 Chevelle my dad bought in 1968. I bought it from him in 1976. It's a 13817 with an M20 4-speed with the L35 motor with the factory 4 piston disc brakes. It came with the 3:31 posi, which was great for highway driving. Drivetrain is all original. As you said, it's the smell, the sound, and the feel of the whole experience of owning a classic vehicle! Your video did that for me, minus the smell.

Beautiful car. Keep the 3.73 rear and consider a perfect fit 5 speed overdrive upgrade. And if you want staggered torque thrusts, US Mags U102 come in 15x7 15x8 and 15x9. These look more like the original castings from the 60's, than the ARE's

Wow such a similar story. My parents bought a green 67 Malibu while my mom was pregnant with me. It got totaled by a bus. The bought a yellow Malibu after that 283 3 on the tree. In1974 my mom got a new car and my dad started driving the Malibu. In 79 my dad bought an elcamino just like the one you showed. He sold the Malibu to his brother because we didn't have a place to store it. At 19 I found a Malibu with an SS hood with a power glide. I wanted a 4spd but bought it anyway. It turned out to look great on the outside and was fast but it was a rust bucket. I had to sell it a few years later. It was too much to restore. The roof had a vinyl top and was rusted through. One day one day maybe I can get one like yours.

@@ExtremeAutomotiveAddiction I followed you on Instagram. I have a picture of my old one on there. My dad had a bunch of Kool vehicles before he started driving the Malibu. 65 or 66 chevy pick up 68 or so pick up an old wyllis army ambulance. He traded vehicles all the time til he bought the elcamino which was a 350 4bbl and fast.
