Did you have to use your c clips from your old drive axles? Or did the ends to your original axle flange hold it in place and the drive axle spines slide in and hold?
That is correct. You have to figure out the correct combination of shims on each side of the carrier. There are also shims on the pinion to adjust it's depth.

I had to use new shims the thickness changed on the new carrier. The only kinda special tools were the dial indicator and the dial torque wrench that went low enough to measure inch/pounds.
