1967 Jeep CJ5 Complete Fuel System Install! In this video I install a new gas tank in the cj5. This is a more modern plastic gas tank with the sending unit in the top. Custom hard lines going to the fuel pump and carburetor. Some valuable lessons learned on this project. This should apply to most cj2a, cj3a, CJ3B, and other Willys Jeeps.

The joy of modern "parts". For a while, it was just the classic reproductions that were bad. Now, even parts for 21st century cars are junk.

Yep it’s a shame, and NOS parts are drying up pretty quick

I absolutely hate it when you think you are getting good new parts and end up with garbage. I have that same fuel tank that I threw across the shop and ended up ordering a steel one. I thought the plastic one was terrible. Good job on the video as usual.

I contemplated the plastic tank. Ended up going with steel tank w/ bottom connections. I can send you fueling routing from fuel pump to carb video if you would like. I have 1960 CJ5. My grandfather taught me to drive it when I was six years old (1970). I am restoring it now. You can imagine the value of this Jeep to me. I have two sons like you (25 and 31). Your videos are absolutely awesome for restoration and forward thinking. Thank you for sharing them! Could you do me a favor and tell me where you got the wheels for your 67 cj5? I am looking to replace original wheels with up to date safer ones. Also if you put rubber shims or original felts under that tank, the fuel neck may line up better with the opening in the body.
@SevenBarSalvage
@SevenBarSalvage Год назад
That’s awesome! Thank you I really appreciate it! They are Kelsey Hayes renegade 1 wheels. They are pretty rare and hard to come by I’m afraid. I went back and shimmed it up with rubber to make the fuel filler line up better, thank you!

That hard line you said goes to the carb looks like same bends as the oil feed from next the fuel pump to the original type oil filter on the 3b. Plastic tank should be a good thing, but not with a top feed like that. The second pipe is possibly a return for a closed system.

Maybe that’s what it’s for? Yeah I would recommend the stock metal one. Thanks!

I'm about to start the process of replacing most of my fuel system and fixing parts that just need some tlc. I limped my cj2a through the last few weeks of fall with the intentions of working on it over the winter. With warmer weather coming and this video providing some additional motivation, it is time to get it out of the pole shed and into the garage. Perseverance is the key when keeping an old jeep running. Great video.

Scout Pilot did an amazing job on my carb as well. I replaced all my gas lines, but I had an original line to compare to and the new one went under water pump and wrapped around to passenger side then up to carb. Several of the bolts had clip/clamps to hold the line in place. I used a fuel pump for the F-134 that didn’t use a glass bowl and Scout pilot rebuilt mine a well. Metal tank works well and cleaner install, just have to deal with rust with time.

Nice job... sometimes its better to give a job to a professional for excellent results such as the Carb you mentioned. I replaced the tank in my 50 Willys pickup with a Poly Unit. It fit well and it is made in America but the fuel line I made all myself. I also used a Facet Electric fuel pump with rubber isolators which makes it super quiet. The Holley electric one was junk. I placed an inline Pressure Regulator, a Pressure Gauge, Glass filter after the Gauge so I will be able to see when it may be clogged and although they have a built in pump removable fuel filter in the Pump I also put a see through unit in with a shut off for easy changing. Of course I am running a Ford 302 V-8 with an Edlebrock Carb.

Good information, thanks for doing this video. You have made me feel better about my recent decision to use a steel gas tank replacement and make up my own fuel lines. I did all that because I'm cheap but sounds like I accidentally avoided several headaches. Keep up the good work.

A better path for your fuel line is tucked up along the outside edge along with the sending unit wire. Then if you go through the firewall near the hi-beam foot switch, you're right where you need to be in the engine compartment.
@SevenBarSalvage

I bought that fuel line kit also... the one from the pump to the carb was a mystery to me on how it was supposed to be routed as well. I just kinda made it work but I think I'm going to do what you did and bend my own. Yours looks so much better than the hokey routing that I did with the one in the kit. I'm not a big fan of Omix-Ada parts anyway, I try to find used or NOS as much as I can and wish I would have just done that with the fuel line as well and saved the money on the pre-bent and measured one.

Thought you said the fuel line you ordered was for the wrong years? Might be why it doesn’t fit.🫤 I’ve had real good luck with InlineTubes for pre bent hard lines.
@SevenBarSalvage
@SevenBarSalvage Год назад
It still should have fit, same engine and gas tank location. I’ve had good luck in the last on other vehicles but it sounds like others have had the same issue I did with these lines. Thanks!
