Vintage Jeep alternator conversion! In this video the generator on the old Jeep Cj5 has quit charging. In todays market and alternator conversion is much cheaper than replacing the generator and the conversion is fairly cost effective. I’m glad to have the Jeep charging again and getting it back in action. This should also apply to Willys cj2a, cj3a, CJ3B, and cj5 jeeps. Thank you for watching!

Great video. Very informative. I need to convert my M38A1 from 24V to 12V at some point and I'll avoid the mounting bracket. Thanks!

For sure shop around for a better bracket but I love the alternator it’s been an excellent upgrade!

An F base bracket and a belt tensioner.. It's a good excuse for this comeback (😁😁) !! Anyway I'm glad you are back again with your Jeep videos.. What happened to the your Willys ? TOTAL reconstruction? And a recommendation if you will...Get rid of the ammeter (if it exists on your dash..) and add a voltmeter.. Way easier, safer and better..
@SevenBarSalvage

Haha for sure! The willys is still in progress should be a video coming out soon it’s getting close! I’m glad you mentioned that I’ve heard horror stories about amp meters. Thanks!

I used one of the best kits on the web. Manufactured by the seller. Still had to use some washers but the v offset bracket came with it. Kit was $100 or so and the alternator came from Amazon at around $50. I just checked and they have gone up to $80-100. Either way it’s a great mod. You can run a volt meter from anything that’s keyed. Glad to see you’re making some movies.

I'm new here, just bought a 53 cj5, and have been seeing what other people have to say about parts, and the quality of the parts. The only scary thing i saw was that frahm oil filter, i use wix on everything because they are the best. I have worked on a lot of car's over the year's, but never an old willys jeep, and i see there are some parts to stay away from, like dorman parts for late model vehicles. G-d bless.

@SevenBarSalvage 4 месяца назад
Yeah there’s a lot of Chinese junk on the market. I’m a fan of wix myself I’ve been trying to find the part number to get rid of the fram. Thanks!

I did more or less what you did with the 3B, worked out fine. Still have to get a good fan belt, using an industrial one at the moment, but not quite wide enough.

Good to see you again, Jacob. Well, the bracket you built looks and I'm sure works 1000 times better. The whole multiple pieces bolted together thing just looks cobbled to me. Knowing how you do things, I'm betting that piece of crap won't be on there too long....

The oil filter bracket was used on the later model cj5’s w/ the 134 F head. I had a 1964 tuxedo park that was set up that way in the 1970’s that came factory with that set up.

On those brackets those bolts. should be flipped around.we're the bolt heads are inside of those brackets instead of on the outside of them. For mounting purposes to fit on the engine flush and square and level.

I got a good chuckle when you showed the adapter for the belt tensioner that came with the kit, I thought "that looks really hokey" and two seconds later you said that exact thing! As always though, you created a solid, good looking setup, nice job!

Very good information, thank you for doing this video. About two years late to save me. I used one on my '46 and pretty much experienced what you did. It was a lot of work to get it in and still turns out to be a kinda" half baked installation. You have convinced me to do it over with a better solution. Thanks for mentioning the alternate sources.

Swapped mine today, made a bracket out of generator bracket & moved the adjuster to battery tray. No welding just drilled 4 holes & no extra parts other than old bolts I already had.

After a 2nd look I realized the adjuster on the battery tray is not a good option. While it works good for now being that the motor is on rubber mounts and can flex a little. I'm gonna bolt the factory adjuster back on the block with a longer bolt & spacer.

Those bracket kits should have A added in L- bracket extension plate arm inside of the packaging for the people who doesn't like.,or want to use that type of extension bracket plate.

My Cj2A came with a "bubba" kit consisting of a small block chevy alternator bracket, some all-thread, and a 90 degree bracket that all bolted back to the starter to hold it in place. I replaced that with a bracket from Classic Military Vehicles via ebay. The kit looks similar but it just immediately worked. No welding, no fabrication, just bolted my existing Delco 10si alternator to my L-head. My experience on alternator brackets is a sample size of one, but that's the route I went. (Though Sal at Vintage Jeeper probably has a respectable kit as well, he tends to do things right.)

I know why those brackets are not the greatest. It's the bolts that's being used to hold those parts together with. That's the actual problem with them to. They need some retaining bolts with squared locker's and round heads on them to. Like for putting together sliding barn doors and tracks with that are made out of metal instead of wood.
@SevenBarSalvage

You’re right that would be a big improvement!

My GPW came with one of those alternator brackets on it and its just a disaster. I bought a cheapy from China and its OK but I'm going to make up similar to your home made bracket.

Would still need the spacer for the upper arm, but instead of lengthening it, could you have used a shorter belt?
@SevenBarSalvage
@SevenBarSalvage 4 месяца назад
That could work! I try and keep wear items stock for when something does go bad I can by the stock part. Thanks!

So was the CJ5 originally a 6v system? If so, did you have to change anything else like lights, gauges?

Sal at vintage jeeper is a good contact for these questions. I’ve personally never done a 6v conversion. Sorry I don’t have more input!

Which pedal assembly did you choose for the conversion?
@patboyle7174
@patboyle7174 5 месяцев назад
I am considering using a break clutch peddle assembly from a 76-86. But I have read the peddle shafts are too long and I need to cut them and bend them to fit properly. Looking for advice or any other setup that might be the easier to do...

If I can help but honestly I don’t know if I can make them cheaper than what people are selling them for! I’ll have to look into it I might can make up a few sets for people interested!
