This is a "real" Lamborghini to me. It is so elegant and classy. Look at the windshield, then the sideline, and then the tail - its perfect. I would pick it over a modern aventador any time. Modern labos are only agressive, this is pure elegance. Also the "low" 340 HP is still a lot, even today. and the "small" v12 sounds very nice. as jay said it is a touring car, you take that for a long trip and at the end you arrive not tired by a loud blaring exhaust.

I don't think you can realistically use more than about 400 hp on the road. Almost every new car review today talks about the track. I don't care about the track. Not going to track a GT car. Plenty of specialist track-day cars if that's your thing. And as the turbo era is upon us, electronically limiting torque in the lower gears is also a thing. Modern high-performance cars are more like dragsters than racing cars. Some car company needs to be brave and introduce a car that stirs the souls of every 50+yo car guy, who are still the majority of buyers of high-end cars. The other thing is to make the cars for European rather than American roads. Super cars and super GTs are for the most part too wide to enjoy on a European country road. I'm sure rich Americans will still lust after them and still buy them.

@@nigel.w I know the tire manufacturers concentrate on high performance, very low aspect ratio tires today. I've been driving a 2001 BMW 330xi with 205/50-17 front & 225-45/17 rear tires. They aren't nearly as low as some but with the typical B-roads ( as the English call them), I've had to replace two rims and two tires due to rough roads in the last 10 years that I've had this car. Using 50-60 Series tires give enough sidewall to protect your rims (usually). One customer came into my friends German car shop to get all four rims replaced. He hit a rib in the pavement, probably over a buried root and it took out all four at once. That was on a Mercedes 450SL and he 'bout choked when he heard the price. I definitely agree with your idea for a "usable" touring/GT type of car, whether it's a coupe or roadster, with around 400-450 hp and a manual 5 or 6 speed gearbox. I prefer a 6 speed with a little higher rear end ratio to get respectable acceleration, and still cruise comfortably. The only way I've found to get anything near those specs is to get an older car like this and keep it maintained. Maybe a little tweak here and there to get a bit more power but take care of it.

This is one of my favorite cars Jay has ever featured. The owner is remarkable. Rebuilt the engine 5 times, rebuilt the transmission, re-painted the car himself…incredible. And now the car has over 250,000 miles on it. What a great story for just an incredible car!

Another fabulous Video featuring a CAR that Leonardo da Vinci might have built. Thank you Jay and congratulations to the generous owner of that OBJECT of ART. Truly, Jay searches the World to produce vídeos featuring the Mona Lisas, the Van Goghs, the Monets, etc, etc, of the CAR INDUSTRY.. In my view, these jewels are not overpriced. If we could go back in time, discussing the price of a painting with Degas, Matisse, Manet, Cezanne, and all the other genious, the conversation could go along the following lines: "Maitre, the canvas costed you 10 Francs, you paid 12 Francs for all the materials used here. Let's say that your time and talent are worth 400 hundred Francs. In sum, the total value of this painting may be 600 or 700 Francs, tops". And probably many painting going today for 100 million were purchased like that. I'm not implying that the Lamborghini featured in this vídeo is Worth the same as a Monet or a Van Gogh. Neverthless, One Million should be the fair Market Value for such a gorgeous, funcional and unique object of Art. Nowadays a Super Car Project can blossom, unfold largely resorting to Computers,Wind Tunnels, Aerodynamic Studies related to Jet Airplanes, etc. To a certain extent, the same applies to Paintings. Properly programmed, a Computer-generated painting can be produced encompassing traits and carachteristics of several Masters. Pay a nice sum of money, a handsome stipend to the Computer Programmer. But don't call him a Leonardo, a Rafael or a Monet.

I first saw one of these in a San Francisco show room in 1968 and it drove my aesthetics in cars ever since. I still think it is one of the most beautiful cars in the world.

My father had one also and knew Jerry. We would tour together up to the Monterey vintage races and hang out with the Lamborghini Club. I would drive my Boss 302 most of the time. Dad has passed but he loved his Lambo!

Actually the improvement in motor oils in the last 15 years would most likely have reduced the rebuild intervals to about half of the five. Also he may be a stickler for new car performance and have rebuilt the motor more often than most owners. Thanks for this video Jay!

Stuart Fitzsimons Quite the opposite, unfortunately. They need SL rated oil with 1500ppm of zinc, 1.5% ash. The oil passages are smaller in Italian engines too, making cold starts murder.

Maybe less. I was going to say modern manufacturing might be superior, but it's an engine. Any competent machine shop can balance and blueprint I would think any engine as well as a modern engine factory in mass production.

@@ryand4533 I heard 5 rebuilds in 250K and after considering one of these an option, my internal voice gave me a quick (dumb and dumber) "check please"/time to go now. Not interested in a car that can be worn out in 50k but with a few mod's should be able to last much longer I suspect.

I personally find it mildly amusing to read the comments along the lines "well 5 engine rebuilds makes this much less impressive". To me it makes it all the more impressive, how many people would go through that work and effort and keep on fixing and driving their car. Especially when it would be more economical to just fix it and stow it away and watch the value rise. Best regards

There is Nothing like driving a classic car around California. This 400 GT is beautiful, fun and fast up in the mountains.!! I put over 600,000 miles on many classic cars... a modified 1968 Pontiac GTO, 1990 Ferrari Mondial Cab, 1991 Z28 Convert in California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah.

A beautiful car. In the early 70's I saw my first 400 on a cool fall morning while camping at the race track at St. Jovite Quebec, Canada on a race weekend. There it was idling on the cool morning, the exhaust just a whisp of white over the dew covered grass. The car was navy blue and to this days one of the most impressive vehicles I have ever seen up close and personal. The guy who owned it was from New York. He told me he had a fanatical mechanic who put chalk marks on the carbs to make sure no one else adjusted the car. The car on Jays website is remarkable in that it has been driven, loved and appreciated for all this time. We tend to forget that anything built in the sixties was nowhere near as reliable as the most modest car built today. That is one beautiful car.

I find it funny that so many people are downing this man rebuilding his engine and tranny many times in the time that he's owned it. Yeah, it's a real shame that the fella has maintained his car so well. So that it doesn't rust, or wear out, or break down easily. This car isn't new. As a matter of fact, even NEW cars should be well maintained. And going around saying that your car has XXX,XXX miles on it and that it runs like new without any major work/ maintenance scare (example: transmission replacement/rebuild, burned up engine) can be summed up in two simple words: bull crap.

1989 Saab 900. 320,000 miles. No engine rebuild. RUNS LIKE NEW. Clutch done at 200,000 miles.

Well one of the rebuilds was because of the unleaded petrol. and if you have opend it up to change the seats, you rebuild other parts, as you have torn it apart anyways. It might no be neccessary, but to maintain the value of such a classic you just do it. Also the owner is an enthusiast. so rebuilds it to keep it perfect. much better than let it sit and rot.

My dad was stationed in Naples Italy from 1976 to 1980... we had a Navy Commander neighbor who had a 67 400GT 2+2!!! Black with a beautiful tan interior... most awesome car ever!!!

I hear you. My old toyota truck went 600,000 kms. The biggest repair, other than oil/filter and plugs, was 3 starter rebuilds. Finally the head gasket went at just above 600,000...

Damn, crazy the value of this car back in 2012. My ex boss has one of these and it was valued at 1.8 million in 2018. Really a beautiful car in addition to it being the first automobile that lambo took from the track to the public roads.

It is still original miles.They correctly rebuilt(rings,valve seats...) the motor and trans several times,as was normal. . ....the car itself has the miles...original wiring et al...Those talking this car down are ill informed . This is an original car with original motor.

My dad and Jack were good friends and both had 400 GT 2+2. Sadly my dad passed several years ago but he loved his car. Had some good trips together to the vintage car races in the bay area. I would drive my Boss 302 and travel with my brother and friend. Dad made gasket kits for the Lambo's and also did a modification by using a single Jaguar V 12 electronic ignition to replace the dual ignition. Sweet driving car.

I would own this over a Ferrari any time. It always boggled my mind that the guys who could most afford to drive the exotic cars always kept them in a garage. When you have the money you can afford to fix whatever it is that would break down so if I was able to own one I would drive it every day.❗️🇺🇸

These comments are so hateful. Jay reviewed some police cars of the sixties and his guests and him stated that these are done and worn out by 70k miles. Reliable? You bet! Up to perhaps three of service. The last police units before the Chargers were the Crown vics. At 200~220k miles of abusethey were put to pasture after 6 to 8 years but some are being snatched up by taxi companies for more duty. F*cking reliable. Hells yeayy. You betcha!!!! Now this Lamborghini at 250k had five rebuilds during *50years* of dailying by the SAME owner. Still keep on keeping on. This is SPARTAAAA sorry I mean love and dedication.

I saw a 400GT just the other day. Metallic blue, and on the road. I took some pictures of it as it was parked. What a beautiful statement to Lamborghini as a fine road car. Which prompted me to see what Jay had to say about it. ; )

Not a big Lambo fan, but the exception to that is the 400GT iteration. One of the timeless classics. I think this body style holds up very well or even better to the Miura.

Beautiful car. A lot of cars from the '60s required frequent maintenance. My sister's '68 Impala required an engine overhaul at 90k. The brakes needed service about every 35k. New plugs, cap and rotor every year. We've become used to today's cars that need only minor service until 100k miles.

well Id disagree,the new cars still need constant attention to keep reliability and if anything major goes they cost a fortune to fix,ie things like dropping the engine to replace an alternator,cambelts at 100k etc and if it stops by the side of the road your pretty much stuck..

***** A lot of dealers overcharge for service and/or claim the engine must be removed in order to complete what should be minor service. Like the oil cooler o-ring on my wife's Nissan Murano. A dealer wanted $350 to replace it. I did it myself for less than $15 in about 45 minutes. I replaced the timing belt, belt tensioner, idler pulleys, water pump serpentine belt and engine mounts on my Honda Odyssey without removing the engine. My cost was less than $400 for the parts and several hours of my time. The dealer wanted over $1000 for the parts and $600 labor.

yeh so true, they way overcharge,and you can fix those things but if something plays up in the efi,or a crank sensor or now some models have electrically operated cams!! I mean they are building problems into the new models and once they bottom out in price in the future there will be a mass of 00 year cars too expensive and complex to fix..

Gary Manis I don't think it's so much that the newer cars are unservicable by the garage mechanic but, rather, that people have just lost the d.i.y. mindset. I have an '06 Mazda MX-5 and you can do almost anything in your driveway if you have basic tools and knowledge.

My wife has a '06 Murano. It's a pain to work on. My mom's previous Cadillac required 2 hours of work in a body shop to replace a marker light bulb. I replaced the timing belt, tensioner, water pump and engine mounts on my '05 Odyssey. Major work. A whole weekend gone. I could have done a timing chain set, water pump and mounts on a '68 Chevy in a few hours. A big difference in skill required, too.

Highly deserved praise for the owner of this car for showing the rest of us "how its done". Owning a rare or exotic car is pointless unless you 'drive it!'

You find a 46 year old car that's that fast, stock, and that good, stock, that has done so many miles without rebuild. Short lifespan of parts is the price for excellence, but if you love your car, then it's no price at all.
