my son and I just started a '64 Ford F-100 for the first time in 12 years, fresh tune up and all new fluids first. purrs like a kitten and no smoke... yet !
I love ❤️ Cougar XR7’s, I had 1974, totally fully load silver addition, it was beautiful and magical ... I miss that car, it had a 351 cubic inch Cleveland V8, I towed a trailer, and that car handled the load perfectly, I added swaying-stabilizing-gear-hookups, and would go down an empty freeway at 80 miles an hour, with the A/C on full-blast, Stereo Radio/ 8 track tape playing ... Wow, what a smooth riding car, it took the bumps so smoothly and the suspension was the best ... I was a young, 21, year old, and this car had class, so many people always gave me a thumbs-up and fell in-love with the car, it was my baby ... I really wanted the 1968 Cougar XR7, with all the options, like A/C, Stereo/cassette, full-length console, power windows, Brakes, Steering, Dual-Front-Seats, cruise control, upgraded 6 speakers, tilt-steering wheel, fully leather seats and interior, 390 cu in engine, automatic transmission, Emerald-Green exterior with black-vinyl-roof, with sun/moon roof, black-leather-Interior-through out, spoke-wire-hubcaps, and 4-barrel carburetor, dual-power-mirriors, etc., the car would have cost over $8,000.00, But, things did not work out at that time, I had to wait, and the Brand-New 1974 Silver-Edition, exterior was totally silver with silver vinyl roof, and cranberry-red interior, It was the best!!!
The best thing to do for a motor that has been sitting that long is take each plug out and squirt a little oil in and then take the coil wire off and turn it over for a few times then pull the plugs clean them and put some 2 cycle gas down the carb it will avoid a dry start on the cylinder walls, do not use eather it will clean all the oil off the cylinder walls and could lock it up, the oil will also give the piston rings to the cylinder a better seal for better vacume to suck fuel in better.
I had to use ether every time I wanted to start my 67 XR7 - til I put in a Holley 570 street avenger carb. Starts right every time now, no matter how long it has been sitting... cougars rule!
Man i don't get why people think its ok to run the starter more than 10 seconds straight! That also hurts the battery more then anything. the battery heats up and burs up the cells. i seen it happen on desiels in the winter and cars that had hard time starting.
I don't think it had enough juice to even overheat to be honest. Not only that, the old starters were a hell of a lot more durable than these newer ones. They even use them for little electric go karts XD
Judging from the uneven firing, I'd be willing to bet that one or more of the hydraulic lifters is gummed up. When you opened the hood after it was running, it sounded like there was a cylinder coming back through the carburetor, so an intake valve is likely stuck open .
It's cool to see these vids lots of people comment negative but half the cars like this just starting it does not make it road Worthy it was parked for a reason shocks tires radiator mufflers etc etc etc . I know I bought one like this cracked head , gas in oil guy ran it with a fryed fuel pump diaphram started right up though steering box all over the place it was more work than I wanted but it was running ....
TestECull Yeah but the guy didn't prime it at all.. Ether is not a primer, If he had of filled the bowls I bet it would have been running in the first few cranks.

8v-of-fury Yeah prolly. Good spark, full float bowls, functional choke, functional accelerator pump and decent mechanical condition? Pump the gas twice, bump the key, usually they come to life within a second.
Ilove the old cougars my dad had a 67 289 3 spd on the floor, well that was about 40 years ago when I was 8, tried to teach my sister to drive that car but my dad said all she kept doin was was leaving the clutch out too fast and leavind rubber on the road.
Nice car pal but you really should have gotten the car started before you started filming. You're always going to have idiotic critics that think they know all there is to know about cars and will never have anything nice to say.
I'd avoid revving the engine like that after leaving my car sit over night, let alone after sitting for 25 years. However, I bought a '66 Chevy short bed step side pickup back in 1995, and it had sat uncovered in the woods behind this guy's house for years, with the original un-rebuilt trans and engine, and we sprayed some starting fluid into the carb, and it started right up after not running for a few years, and it smoked bad for a few minutes, but it cleared up and ran great for 3 years!
