I've watched these videos so many times that I find myself using Mike-isms, "nice and tight" "catch that up later" etc.... You Sir, are the Jedi Knight of Porsche restoration guys. Nothing short of fantastic.

Hi Rob Thanks for the flattering compliment=) I don't really profess to be a Porsche specialist..just a hobbiest and car enthusiast sharing some things My lingo is a bit out of the norm..another ism used quite frequently is this guy and that guy for parts..strange I think..anyways be carful!=) and thank you again!

I don’t know much about car restorations but I’m sure you have gone far beyond what other restorers do. It’s all like it better that brand new. It’s unbelievable of mush detail you’ve gone into. This car is amazing

Thanks Mooney I appreciate very much=) Yes car restorations can vary quite a bit in thoroughness and detail. The goal for this restoration as Hagerty would define would be a number 1 car Even still a number 1 car can swing wide in perception and actual thoroughness. This channel is really to help the DIY guy understand the process and be empowered to take things on. The definition (professional restoration) really doesn't mean anything to me..you will hear terms like nut & bolt, complete restoration, rottiserie restoration etc.. all means nothing unless they dive in deep. Usually someone is trying to make some money at the expense of someone else's ignorance so to speak.. its not honest and lots of fraud to be had in the classic car arena. To me unless the work is coming out of something like Singer or equivalent. its just and attempt to cover up and create an illusion of doneness Thanks for noticing the extra detail=)

If I have to guess on a torque setting I try to get a feel for it by mounting the torque wrench and then turning the desired size wrench to the torque value in question. It's not perfect, but it can help with over-torquing. Under-torquing aluminum threads can be as bad as over-torquing. If the threads aren't properly loaded, vibration can cause them to fatigue and fail. My two cents. As usual, Mike never fails to deliver!

Another fascinating video Mike. Thank you for making these. I'm sure everyone appreciates how much attention you pay to editing as you do to the restoration itself. You do a great job of laying out what you want to explain and focusing on the salient points. As guys have noted below, it seems you could have used a "crow-foot" adapter to torque those hard to reach bolts? Maybe increase the setting a touch to account for the offset. Also, I had no idea there was a suspension protection plate for that area! I even thought of bodging something together myself because having the master cylinder just hanging under the car is a bit scary...should have known. Thanks for enlightening me on that too! I'm going to pick one up from Stoddard.
@MikesRestorations
@MikesRestorations 6 лет назад
Hi John You are welcome..its a pleasure ..I surely could have used an adapter. One of the reasons not used is to show the DIY guys there are times that will come throughout a project that feel and judgment will be required. Also this is one reason I never take my cars in for servicing. Im not sure the mechanic doing the work or the work done on the car prior to my purchasing has been as careful and sensitive. The DIY guy really has the best possible chance by diving in and giving it a try..after awhile experience and feel will become second nature. Stoddard is great! Im sure they will have something for your year and model Good Luck!!

Mike - a guy over on the Early 911S Registry posted a comment regarding your steering rack yoke. I'll quote his comments: 'It appears that on the steering install episode (posted about a month ago) he has a 1969 bolt with it's cotter pin shaft hole and an earlier yoke . (it doesn't look compatible - or at least he is missing a castled nut and washer).' The gentleman also posted a pic which shows the different year yokes, which I can't attach here. If you go over to the Early 911S Registry, then go to the Technical Info Forum, and scroll down a ways, you will see a thread titled: Mike M on RU-vid - 1967 911 Restoration. Hope this helps. Really enjoy your videos. Great attention to detail.

Hi David Thanks for the post! I did try to pull up the image but for some reason it won't allow me to view what Bob is referring to..Id love to see it but can't seem to open it. Its hard to say what's going on there..the bolt is original to the car and didn't look as if the area has ever been accessed for service work which is where things can go wrong...Shouldn't present a problem though in function and security off the steering the way is assembled. Im always so impressed the detail some of the viewers are key on They really lookin close!=)
@MikesRestorations
@MikesRestorations 5 лет назад
Ah! Im able to view now! Yes Bob has three variations to view however he doesn't show a 67 set up..definitely not a 65-66 looks similar to the 68 -69 Production date on my car was November 66..also kind of a crossover year with various hardware. No telling what when on during assembly at that time but from my research Porsche was switching out hardware during 66..you'll see some cars with all silver zinc finishing transitioning into yellow cad plating..as the bins were emptying the new replacements came in. Thats why some of these cars have silver color zinc plating in some areas and switch up to yellow cad in those same areas depending on the production numbers..later 67-68 more Hardware was making its transition to yellow cad. The Porsche historians would know what went on and where much better than me. It could have been a hardware choice at that time during assembly..anomalies do occur Thanks again for sharing!

Mike, did you clean the inside the rack before re-greasing the rack via the back bolt?
@MikesRestorations
@MikesRestorations 5 лет назад
Hi Brian My rack was in fairly pristine condition inside..Boots still sealing and wear almost non existent. I would think most racks would be in similar condition if the boots hold up. I cleaned the outer shafts and pumped moly grease in thru the nut /hole access point. I filled with grease using a grease gun and zirk fitting with hose over the fitting to fit inside the access hole. Pumped grease until starting to come out the weep holes where the boots slide on. Once grease started to come out I temporarily covered the weep holes with masking tape until ready to do finial assembly. I primed the shafts with grease after sliding boots on and then pulled off the tape.

Mike, I can't seem to find the JP Group a/s bushings #1640200110, called my normal Porsche parts sources and both said they can't get them. May I ask where you sourced yours from? Thanks, Mike!

Hi Mike. Thanks for your videos. Am looking at the inside of the steering gear. When I took the lid off a small plastic disc and a half plastic washer was sitting on top of the spring plate. The half plastic washer has me worried as it looks broken. But there’s no other broken piece and the edges are beveled the same. Is this right? Cheers mate from Oz

No Problem, What year is your steering rack? can you be more specific on the exact location you are describing
@eljimberinoq5518
@eljimberinoq5518 2 года назад
@@MikesRestorations it's a 1969. Looking at the manual and watching your video I can see they're different. I put some grease on there and that held the plastic disc in place long enough to tighten the spring plate... but it seems weird to have that floating around in there...
