I had someone reach out to me to make him some main leaves for a 1968 International 1300 4x4. All we had was the specs from the manufacturer. So with that we made two main leaves. The process was pretty simple as long as we have either a sample or the exact specs. However, nothing is more complicated than trying to design a spring from scratch. There are engineers for that.
Anyhow, hope you enjoyed the video.

What a breath of fresh air, all hope is not lost! A spring shop that actually makes springs Kudos to you for keeping the trade alive!

I really like the fact you don't change or do edits to remove mistakes. I think in many chases you really do enjoy and do have some fun showing what your doing. Good PR for you shop and makes some really great videos.

I don't think I've ever seen a main leaf with one of the eyes on the bottom of the leaf before. Good job Scott!

They are rare. Dodge uses them a bit and a few other manufactures.

We would like to see more than one video every three months. Your work is fun to watch. By the way, I think my garbage man wears the same blue coveralls 😂
@simcoespring
@simcoespring Год назад
coveralls are made by CINTAS and they are the only ones i found with a Fire Resistance on them. made form cotton. Most coveralls are made from 60% or more polyester which burns quite nicely.

What kind of drill bit are you using to drill through hard steel? I only clicked on because I saw (1968 4x4), I have a fascination with 50s 60s 4x4s. So I'm assuming you get these leave springs from a outside source already tempered, a chance to show that process would be something to see. Good no nonsense video!
@simcoespring
@simcoespring Год назад
We drill the holes with just jobber bits. Most holes we drill are 13/32 or 17/32. We usually drill at about 130RPM, low and slow. we also use coolant as well, but not always, depends on how hot the drill bit is getting.

@@simcoespring ...it actually wasn’t that bad. I have a flatbed so access was easy... should have remembered your knife trick with the bolts..that would have been easier...all in all...1 1/2 hours from opening the garage door to last bolt tightened.

Thanks for taking time to show this. So no zerk fitting? These are just greased on installation?
@simcoespring
@simcoespring Год назад
they are usually installed with a wet bolt and greased through the bolt.

Not seen that pattern with the eyes apposed before. As the customer is on the other side of the country, I assume you have some sort of reference guide to consult to work out how to build a spring like this? Also what sort of drill bit are you using to drill heat treated steel? Goes through like a knife cutting butter!
@simcoespring
@simcoespring Год назад
Just a really sharp jobber bit. However you have to drill it at about 60 RPM or the bit will dull instantly.
@s2t4i6n9e
@s2t4i6n9e Год назад
When you make the 2nd cut, after measuring and marking the length, do you cut it perpendicular and grind the end or do you cut it at an angle so that you don't have to grind it? Also, why are the ends rolled in opposite directions?
@simcoespring
@simcoespring Год назад
we do not cut any of the material on the 45 degree angle, mostly because of accuracy and the fact that my chop saw is really hard to adjust. The eyes are rolled in different directions because that is how it was made back in 1968. Each manufacturer makes and rolls their eyes differently. Dodge does a lot of down-turned eyes, most do "Berlin" eyes, which is a upturned eye rolled backwards. I could really do a video on each different eye design. you can adjust the ride height also by turning the eyes up or down, so yah, a lot of different reasons to change the eye type.

@CameronMatthews760 Год назад
Might be a dumb question, but why do you press in the bushings after letting it cool instead of slipping it in while the steel is hot and letting it cool around it?
@simcoespring
@simcoespring Год назад
not really sure about that. We always press them in cold so we don't have any issues with deformation. plus I'm used to rolling eyes for rubber bushings, which is more important to have cold.

that is just a Kodiac/top kick. I believe there where a few different springs that went in the rear of that vehicle. 8 leaf, 9 leaf or 10 leaf rear springs. They also came out with a tapered rear suspension for that truck too. so a bunch of options. Contact me at www.simcoespring.com on my contact page and I can help you further.
