1968 Mallard - prototype year --- Original vintage snowmobile
This snowmobile was made by Mallard Coach in West Bend, Wisconsin. A travel trailer company that branched out into snowmobile manufacturing.
A most unique feature is a mono shell fiberglass exterior -- tunnel, hood, and belly pan. Under the fiberglass tunnel is angle iron framework housing automotive-style leaf springs. Another unique feature is a driveshaft-mounted disk brake.
Powered by a 297cc JLO engine, with electric start.
For 1968, the gas tank was "hidden" under the snap-on seat. This feature allows the distinctive rear-end treatment seen in their prototype year. Also known for its pastel color as well as the bicycle handlebars, bicycle levers, with handsome white bolster.
This machine received a first-place class trophy at the VSCA Nationals Show -- Survivor class. Just returned home after a 10-year stint in a snowmobile museum.
Ran and drove when placed into the museum. No doubt needs fuel lines and a carburetor rebuild.
This example shows certain wear and tear from use. There are cracks and creases on the hood. The original windshield shows scuffs. As people say. "They are only original once".
