Love those original Falcon unis.

I agree that the Falcons got it right with their original 1966 unis but it gets pretty damn hot and humid in Atlanta and maybe they thought the black jerseys absorbed too much heat, sapping energy from the players, kinda like why the Cowboys never wore their dark blue jerseys for home games at Texas Stadium, but the Falcons red jerseys probably absorbed as much heat as their classic black ones did. The Falcons red jerseys, red helmets uni combination also looks much better than the sh!t they have now.

This was The Dutchman's first win as the Falcons Head Coach, he took over the team after an 0-3 start under Norm Hecker, then he lost his first game as the Falcons HC, 38-7 to Green Bay, dropping Atlanta to 0-4 but he guided the Falcons to a 2-8 record in the final 10 games of the season to wrap up a 2-12 season.

I bet Coach was so happy beating Fran Tarkenton in this game...especially that Fran threw the interception at the end. Their relationship was in really bad shape during the 1965-66 seasons with the Vikings.
@lsmftymf
@lsmftymf 3 года назад
A pair of strong personalities who each had clashing ideas on how to run an offense. Van Brocklin was an old-school head coach and Tarkenton is opinionated to the point of annoyance.
@jlh4jc
@jlh4jc 3 года назад
In retrospect, you could see this being a combustible relationship. Before he was a coach, Norm Van Brocklin was one of the elite QBs of his day. He has a bust in Canton for his QB play and not for coaching. He was headstrong by nature and since his ticket to the HOF was being a pocket passer, he tried to create a QB in his image out of Fran Tarkenton. But Fran himself was headstrong as well and had his own ideas on how to play QB. Once he got away from Van Brocklin, he started to blossom. Tarkenton also has a bust right there with Van Brocklin and had success his way. They had different styles, but both possessed the traits needed to be an HOF QB. But working with each other, they didn't mix.

Norm was a pocket qb who had no use for that scrambling horseshit.

@@jlh4jc Have you ever heard the phrase, " Those who can, do and those who can't, teach " before? Norm Van Brocklin was a doer as his HOF credentials as a QB illustrate, as an NFL Head Coach ( a Teacher ), his .398 career winning percentage is proof of his teaching ability, definitely a can't.

I think the film was derived from the 1968 game in Atlanta. It was one of only two wins that year for the Falcons. Helped to ruin the then, undefeated Giants' season. They shouldn't have lost to the Falcons.
@romaink
@romaink 3 года назад
Agreed. This is the fifth game of the 1968 season (October 13,1968). The Falcons did not play the NY Giants in 1969.
@tommythomason6187
@tommythomason6187 3 года назад
@@romaink And, Atlanta also beat the Bears at Wrigely Field. Gale Sayers was already out with the injury, at that point. That's kind of puzzling, also: how could the Falcons beat the Bears, in kind of a must-win situation for Chicago? The Bears, predictibly, played hard and physical, yet a team like the Falcons beat them in their own back yard in 1968.
@mitchellmelkin4078
@mitchellmelkin4078 8 месяцев назад
@tommythomason6187 , Ruining the Giants' undefeated season was no big deal, as those four victories were all against pretty bad teams. New York itself was no better than a mediocre squad, only one year removed from Tarkenton's arrival there, at which time he typified the team's talent level as being the worst he had been associated with since coming into the League, which was really saying something.

Having seen some of this footage before, I was fairly certain it sounded as if he was razzing Paul Martha at 1:10, who wore the number 20 for the Steelers. As the Giants were the actual opponent though, Van Brocklin must have been referring only to the jersey number and didn't include the player's name (# 20 for New York that year was Scott Eaton).

Van Brocklin strikes me as one of those Bill Belichick disciples who thinks that being "tough" and a disciplinarian is all you need to do to form a winning team. You can be a disciplinarian and still be a terrible coach, as Van Brocklin proved over his career.

@@ultrametric9317 The Rams were 12-2 in 1973, their 2 losses were against Minnesota and Atlanta and had the Falcons won their game vs. the Rams in LA, the Rams would have finished the season at 11-3 but the Falcons 9-5 record would have been 10-4 and they'd still have fallen short for the NFC Western division title.
