I remember this game. Joe Namath was hurt in 1970 and the Jets went 4-10.......however they had the Number One defense in the NFL that year.......Couldn't score...... Listened to game on radio in NYC!!!!!
George Nocks career game - RIP He was a renowned sculpture after his career in football and it earning as much is $30,000 for some of his pieces look him up on the Internet
The season lost, the Jets seemed determined to at least prove they had the better defense, and it appears they accomplished that in convincing fashion!

When the Jets were relevant - even during a losing season. They were front and center because of Joe Namath - always the camera magnet, during a time when the NFL’s popularity was exploding. This was the first year of the merger (NFL - AFL), and, I believe, the first year of MNF.
@@robjaimes8830, That was already well underway by the mid-60's and was really spurred on by the huge monetary leap in both league's TV contracts and the even more widespread coverage of all games they provided.
The New York Jets went 4-10 in 1970 and the Minnesota Vikings went 12-2. Game played at Shea Stadium and narrator was Jack Whitaker. Pro Football Hall of Fame members. Minnesota Vikings: Bud Grant, Carl Ellard Allan Page, Mike Tinglehoff, Paul Kraus, Ron Yary. New York Jets: Weeb Ewbank, Joe Namath, Don Maynard, Winston Hill.
Never saw the Jets wear white at home, and also, didn't know the Jets were #2 in defense. They look good - a persistent pass rush, and they stacked up the Vikings' outside runs.
WOW, what an super amazing upset win by the New York Jets and it took place at beloved Shea Stadium, however the 1970 New York Jets finished 4-10 that season!!
@Matt Joseph; True, he should’ve stayed in Minnesota. He had a forgettable year with the Pats and Minnesota could’ve used his experience in the playoffs. But he wanted the money, got a better deal with Boston.
I loved going to Shea to watch the Jets. My first time was the year before for the game against the Oakland Raiders( not LA or LV). Of course, Lamonica beat us with two TD passes to Warren Wells. At least we beat the Raiders when it counted in the 68 AFL championship game.
Warren Wells too bad his career was short he was a Gifted Reciever, Not to take away from the Jets. True they beat em when it counted. Im from Las Vegas by the way , and I totally agree with you. I'm not in favor of moving cities etc. If Vegas wants a team the NFL should expand . And I'm not big on that either.
@@stevereber Yes it’s to bad Oakland cannot help with a stadium for either the A’s or the now LV Raiders. They just cannot do it. My view is that the NFL, MLB and the owners should fund 100% of any ballpark and stadium. They have the money. It is unconscionable and abhorrent that the taxpayers have to fund a multi-billionaire business and multi-billionaire owners so they can get richer. When is this shit ever going to stop?
Its a shame that the Vikings were not able to keep Bob Berry after Kapp left. If they had, 1970 and 1971 might very well have ended differently for them
Yes, him ( or anyone else ) would;ve been a step up from Cuozzo and Lee, but by the time Kapp left; Berry was no longer with the Vikings ....think he leftin 67 or 68.
@@barbaracaroll He kicked a lot of short FG's because that's all his leg was good for, and even then. * From 1974 through 1977 he missed no less than SEVENTEEN extra points !
@@barbaracaroll Yes,correct. This was especially true in 1970 when he led the league in scoring . They simply could not punch it in so in came Cox for the Chip shot.......they had an excellent offense with Kapp in 69 btw.
Love, lol, the insider snide comments by PHILLY's SABOLS, and JACK WHITAKER..about Philly, and the praise for Philly's George Nock who had a short injury plagued career for the NYJETS, but when healthy, was a fine young rusher.
Cuozzo had a good year but was inconsistent! Jets came to play and looked very good on both sides of the ball! Credit Weeb and his staff for a great job on this day!
They wore white a couple of times when they played at Shea ie the Chiefs,Colts,Seahawks, and of course Minnesota were Shea Stadium games where they wore their road whites
Jets whites at home before they wore white at home from 1985-89, 1970 Minnesota 1971 Kansas City 1972 Baltimore 1974 LA Rams 1975 Pittsburgh 1978 Seattle
Early post merger game proving the Vikings did not match up well with big physical defenses. This was their only real weakness in those great 70's teams but was a fatal flaw.
Not surprising at all, Vikings offense 1970 and 71 was atrocious, their defense was at its peak during that time but no offense means the defense is on the field way too long and usually will get tired in the 4th and give up a few points. Wouldnt be till 72 when the vikes got tarkenton back again that they got the passing going but needed a good back and thankfully in 73 the spin doctor, Chuck Foreman came on board.
Too bad the Vikings didn't have a decent quarterback in 1970-71. Their defense was probably the best in the NFL those two seasons and they may have won a Super Bowl or two with a better QB.
Vikings and Jets is a rare match up. I can't remember too many games between these two teams. Since the Vikings are in the NFC and the Twins are in the American League and the Jets are in the AFC and the Mets are in the National league, the Minnesota teams didn't make too many visits to Shea Stadium.
The Vikings played on more game at Shea 1979 on Monday Night Football lost 14-7 the Twins never played at Shea Interleague play didn't start until 1997 If the Twins played the Mets in New York it was at Citi Field Shea Stadium closed in 2008
@@michaelleroy9281 The Yankees played in Shea Stadium for two years (1974-75) when Yankee Stadium was being renovated, so the Twins played some games at Shea at that time. I went to at least one of those games. It was kind of a weird interlude in Yankee history. Yankees at Shea is kind of a baseball Twilight Zone for older fans who remember it.
First year of the merged NFL. Had to be WEIRD for football fans. It must've felt like the old teams were playing in a brand new league with games on new channels and new timeslots.
Why the Jets messed with the uniforms again after Parcells restored the classic threads is beyond me. Just another in a long list of reasons why they're a crappy organization.
