Cougars and T-Birds, with the sequential tail lights. When I was a boy, driving with my parents at night, I'd throw a fit to follow one of those cars just to see the sequential turn signals! It was that big of a deal to little, car crazy, kids.

You're right Chuck, back in the day before car seats we would stand up on our knees in the back seat to get a glimpse of those turn signals on a T-Bird. Our parents always alerted us and commented if we were following one.

@@dexm8846 LOL! Yup. I never wore a seatbelt as a kid and either did my parents. Then a State law was passed and we tried but always forgot. Around 86 or 87, when I racked up a seatbelt ticket of $100 and a point to insurance, is when I learned..... Learned fast how insurance company arbitrary rates by age discrimination are worse than a ticket!!! My brother always leapt on me for a commute of cage match wrestling in the back of the Buick, on the way to hockey practice. Yup, it was a different time. It's amazing we all lived!

I love these Cars that you NEVER Ever See. I was at the Atlantic City Convention Hall Auction Presidents weekend in 1988 and this Cream Puff Light Green with a White Interior comes crawling by my feet with a little old lady driving this Beauty that I never even seen 1 before. I stood there and cried as the car was sold at $3000 in Perfect condition. No one wanted it. Next Year I brought Money. Left with a ‘63 Lincoln in a very pale blue with 60K and perfect condition for $3500.

Coffee on a rainy a.m. and a Thunderbird, a 1971 no less. I was a tenth grader then. We had a 1971 Ford sedan in a weird green color for a drivers training car. One of the girls swamped it when she met a semi coming around a corner on a country road. Took the edge and ran it down the side. I was in a different group thank goodness. My pal said she screamed "OH God, its a F***ing logging truck!" and swerved too fast for the teacher to do anything. 🤣 Thanks guys I had a good laugh remembering that. Poor girl got razzed in the hallways for a month or so. LOOK OUT ITS A LOGGING TRUCK!!

Now I need some coffee! Some coffee and donuts from Shipley's! Your story reminds me of the funny family story involving my older sister at 15 around 1970 or so. My brother (the oldest) was trying to teach her to drive. She was behind the wheel of his 69 Sportsroof Fairlane 500, backing out of our driveway. As utility pole across the street got closer, my brother yelled "Hit the brake!" She accidently hit the gas instead, and sideswiped the passenger door on the pole! 😂😂😂😂 Years later I backed into our neighbor's blue Ford Courier with my 78 Fairmont. When we notified him of my mishap, Dad brought up the pole incident involving my sister. Our neighbor laughed and joked "It runs in the family!" 😂😂

I never realized before, but it seems at this time Ford was trying to make their own "Eldorado" with the Thunderbird. The very early '70's saw cars like the Mustang and Cougar getting much larger, luxurious, and, to the dismay of many, rather bloated looking. This is a beautiful example of a rarely seen car with a very appealing color. I really like the view straight on from the rear. A very clean, elegant look.

Actually, the Thunderbird was the vehicle that launched the personal luxury segment, especially after it gained a back seat for '58, and all those GM cars like the '62 Grand Prix, '63 Riviera, '66 Toronado, '67 Eldorado, and '70 Monte Carlo were the General's answer to the Tbird. With regard to the styling of this '71 Tbird, that's because it was the recipient of some GM influence. The 5th generation Tbird bowed for '67 with coke-bottle styling on its C-pillar, but a midcycle refresh was being planned for the '70 model year. In February '68, GM executive VP Bunkie Knudsen was brought over to FoMoCo and named president by Henry Ford II. Design changes for the Tbird's midcycle refresh were underway, and Mr. Knudsen influenced these styling changes. Prior to leaving GM, he was responsible for the styling of the '69 Grand Prix with its noticeable "beak." Eventually called the "Bunkie Beak" and lambasted by the automotive press at the time, the '70-71 Thunderbird and the '71-72 Ford sedans all showed similar front-end styling. After only 18 months at Ford, Bunkie Knudsen was fired by Henry Ford II for not getting along with certain key people, including Lee Iacocca, who was also eventually fired by Ford in '78. Aside from the Bunkie Beak, the '70-71 Thunderbird two-door hardtops also benefitted from Bunkie-influenced, sportier styling with the Pontiac-esque SportsRoof body style.

You're right about this car being aimed upscale. The 67-9 and related 70-71 were heavy luxury barges because that's what buyers in the personal luxury car market wanted at the time. My mom and dad bought one off the car hauler in early 1970, and thought they were in tall cotton. I rode all over the USA in the backseat of that 70 (candy apple red and white) as a child, and added it to my collection 20 years ago--so I am biased. I love vintage birds and have had several of them (62, 64, 65, 66, 70, 77, 79). I think the 70-71 are the most unique T-birds produced. Some people don't like the beak--but I love it, and prefer the sleek roofline of the 70-71 to the 67-69. The 70-71s were great performers, handing better than the earlier generation of birds. Not sports cars, but sporty cruisers. My 66 is beautiful, but a total hog in the corners by comparison. My biggest complaint, other than the crap window motors for the rear windows, is how difficult the 70 is to see out of, especially to the rear and passenger side--My 1970s has this sloped roof line and no passenger side mirror--so.a 20 foot blindspot.

These cars are so under-appreciated. Basically a 4500 pound rocket. 480 ft lbs of torque gets you to jail time in under 18 seconds. Congratulations you have a mint rare time machine! Love it!

In May of 1970, My new bride had a 64' Dodge Dart rust bucket. When the leaf springs let go when we drove slowly over a speed bump in downtown Chicago, on a Friday evening and decided it wasn't worth getting it repaired. Saturday morning we drove over to Al Piemonte Ford in Melrose Illinois. We saw a beautiful 1970 or Thunderbird two-door sports roof on the used car lot. I was so impressed with that car until I open the door to get in, and then quickly got out. The interior of that car reeked of cigar smoke, and we were told that this had been Mr. Piemonte's personal car. As much as I loved the car, I couldn't breathe inside and we turned it down. From there I spotted a 1967 mustang convertible with only 32,000 miles and we purchased that. Gas at that time was selling for $.32 a gallon

The Thunderbird's wraparound back seat was first introduced on the 4th generation (1964-1966) and lasted through the 5th generation (1967-1971). These unique back seats were introduced at a time when rear seat belts were still optional, and the two people sitting in the back would often sit sideways to face each other. Not really safe, especially in an accident. Ralph Nader's book "Unsafe at Any Speed" really changed the automotive industry's way of thinking. Collapsible steering columns, crumple zones, padded/energy-absorbing dashboards and front seatbacks, locking front seatbacks on two-door models, 3-point seatbelts, headrests (or head restraints), 5-mph bumpers, solid B-pillars on sedans, and the death of the convertible in the early '70s were all thanks to Nader's philosophy. I once owned a '65 Thunderbird Special Landau (Emberglo Metallic with Parchment vinyl roof), and its matching Parchment-with-Emberglo-colored interior with the wraparound back seat (and no rear seatbelts) always looked so elegant. I miss that car!

Totally awesome to see this rarely-seen paint color 50 years after the fact. Gray Gold Metallic was available on various Fords, Lincolns, and Mercurys for only two model years: 1971 and 1972. For the Thunderbird, that meant this paint color was available on the last model year of the outgoing 5th generation (1967-1971) and the first model year of the incoming 6th generation (1972-1976). This particular Tbird's matching Gray Gold interior is both stunning and amazing! I remember the lady that lived across the street from my childhood home had a 1972 Tbird in a similar color scheme as this '71 (Gray Gold Metallic with a brown vinyl top), except that hers had a Tobacco (brown) leather interior. I wish Ford would bring back that color, reformulated with clearcoat of course. Can you imagine how snazzy it would look on certain Ford/Lincoln vehicles that have crease lines or feature lines in their sheetmetal with that shimmering paint color? I'm a sucker for unusual paint colors. I'd buy one!

Mercury Cougar XR7s were another great example of personal luxury from Ford especially the early years 1967-68.
@themystichromecobraauthori9704
@themystichromecobraauthori9704 3 года назад
Although based on a stretched Mustang chassis, the first Mercury Cougars from '67-70 were marketed as "the Gentleman's Mustang" because it could have all the same performance goodies under the hood but with a posher interior, and Mercurys in general were considered to be a step-up from Fords as mid-level luxury, while Lincolns were the ultimate luxurious expressions from FoMoCo. Yes, Ford wrote the book on personal luxury, and it all started with the '55 Tbird two-seater and became more practical from '58 onwards with the addition of a back seat. Aside from Tbirds, FoMoCo vehicles that could be labeled as "personal luxury" were the '74-76 Ford Elite, '74-97 Mercury Cougar (as it became based on the Tbird), and the Lincoln Marks II through VIII. Even the first Mustang was billed as "the poor man's Thunderbird" when optioned out with all the creature comforts that were available at the time.

The Big Beak Birds were real controversial when they came out. I thought they were great. My dad worked for a Ford dealership at that time and would drive the new 71 Birds home. They were heaven. Big bro Lou!!! Jim's Thunderbird is outrageous, man. What a flowing, beautiful beast of a car. Jeez, it takes me back, 'cause my parents got a used (I wanna say mid 70's) Tbird in the early 80's when I was 10 or 11. It was a deep blue with white leather interior. I remember little power windows in the back that I would play with incessantly with my older brothers as I was always sandwiched between them, being the youngest and smallest. All tubesocks, floppy sneakers and Ozzy Osbourne or baseball tshirts, fights and Mark yanking my sneakers off my kicking stocking feet and threatening to throw them out the window if I wanted to hang with him and his many hot girlfriends lol 🤣😅. He was my big bro and I idolized him! I certainly adopted his ever present tubesocks 'n floppy sneakers blue collar baseball guy style lol 😜. This 'Bird is a bit earlier and different from ours, but certainly takes me back......Just look at that rear end with those taillights and sharp creases in the decklid, that big beak in front, flowing lines along the side like wings. Beautifully kept and well put together interior, as these old Fords truly had. Thanks for all the inspiration, big brother. :) JV Johnny ⚾

It was a bit sporty looking...but I don't remember it having any luxury than what we had here. I remember liking the car a lot, and it was very reliable...until it wsn't. this was a great example of the next generation from the 60's. Still very luxury oriented...Love the green color too! Dammit I miss my 71 Bird This actually looks like the tbird I used to own. Same color. I had my wound up WAY past 120 one day. The speedometer needle hit the BACK side of the peg it rested on normally when it registered 0. I’m quite sure I was doing at least 140 maybe more. The windows were down and as the speed increased the headliner got wind underneath it and started pushing us down in the front seat. I screamed to my brother to help me push the headliner up so I could see out the windshield. He was probably shittin his pants while I was trying to control the beast. Awesome fun. Indeed. Ask Jim about the hydraulic controlled windshield wipers. Yes, hydraulic controlled windshield wipers. I had to rebuild the shuttle valve by honing the cylinder and replacing the o rings on the piston. It leaked fluid on my right foot as I drove. That’s how I found out it was hydraulic controlled. The ‘71 was fast and would fill the inside with smoke big time doing burnouts. The ‘73 with the 460 was freagin fast too. Wow, and I survived those times.

The last year for the 5th-generation T-Bird, and the last year that the Thunderbird was a unique model within the Ford lineup. It was sad to see the once vaunted marque have its namesake thrown into Ford’s mixing pot of car design where one design wears five faces. But the real T-Birds had a 17-year run, so still hold a special place in the Ford’s history. This ‘71 is a well-preserved example - beautiful. Keep ‘em coming, Lou !!

Hi, Lou! Yep, even the real birds are singing about it. Those are cardinals we're hearing (the state bird of Illinois) Wheet, wheet, wheet, wheet, wheet! The '71s were the last of the fifth generation T-Birds that began with the '67s, and it was also the last year for the four-door T-Birds that were made throughout this generation. This car is so sleek from bumper to bumper. The body color wheel covers, the SportsRoof styling and that wraparound rear seat all make this car so cool and so unique. So does that front beak (which was also on the '70), although the insurance companies probably weren't too fond of it (too vulnerable to damage)! Then the T-Bird became humongous, too big for its own good once the oil embargo hit! We are very fortunate to see this one for sure. As you said, we don't get to see '71 T-Birds too often. Thanks to you and Jim for this nice quiet T-Bird ride and I hope he does find a good home for it.

A beautiful car, thanks for showing it! The story I read on them was Bunkie Knudsen delayed the release of this car, ordered it back to the design studio, specifically to lengthen and exaggerate the front nose section. Cars were still getting bigger then, and the T-Bird was no exception. Certain design queues reveal the GM influence that was happening at Ford by then. "Henry the Deuce" was enamoured with GM, hence the hiring of Bunkie. His tenure was brief, much to the relief of Lee Iacocca and others.

I had a 71 Tbird didn't look like this beauty, mine was a used with several previous owners, it ran great, it just was beat-up more then anything else. Fun boat to drive, over a hilly New Jersey countryside. Soft is a good description of the suspension system, it is a boat of a car. I think this is the same chasis of the crown vic, with the same wheel lug arrangement as the police cars of the era, as I recall. Nice job Lou. I think the Lincoln Crown Vic and this used the same Chasis after looking into it after mine was bottomed out and jacked the transmission coming off some rail road tracks. Sold it for scrap actually.
