We’re back in Ocala, Florida to check out a couple of nearly forgotten Fords from the 1970s. These NPD collection pieces are both low mileage and rare. First up is a 1973 Ford Gran Torino Sport that’ll blow you away. With its 351cu.in. Cleveland Cobra-Jet engine and 4-speed manual transmission, this Gran Torino was the fastest one available from the factory in ’73. Coming from the NPD archives, this un-restored gem is still in like-new condition so naturally we’re going to roll a few more miles onto the odometer on the back roads of Ocala.
The 1971 Ford Thunderbird, though, was nearest and dearest to Dennis. Nicknamed “Huggy Bear,” this wild yellow T-Bird is built on the Continental Mark III platform and looks like a factory custom Lincoln with its special Brougham package. The exterior of this car is outstanding enough, but it’s what’s inside that really sets it apart. It’s totally 70s, totally un-restored, and totally fun to drive!
It’s always an excellent time checking out Rick Schmidt and his dad’s collection, but this trip was especially groovy. Enjoy this episode of My Classic Car!

My father worked for Ford when I got my license he took me over to Ed Martin Ford on Shadeland Av in Indianapolis I looked at a couple 68 Shelby's 500 but I picked out a new 1973 Grand Torino Sport white with a blue vinyl roof with a 351 Cleveland cost $4400.00 my friends and myself had a great time with my Torino till I traded it in for a new 1979 LTD II it had the same dash as my 1973. Wish I still had my Torino lol !!!

I remember that the Torinos you mostly saw on the road during that 1972-76 body-style period were not the muscle-car Gran Torino Sports but Gran Torino Brougham 2-door coupes with landau roofs and opera windows and all that. I also remember a popular color for Torinos then being a yellowish green metallic. Torino station wagons were also popular, and base, bare-bones Torino sedans in orange were commonly used for taxi cabs.

IMHO, there is no finer car than the Thunderbird, and I loved this episode. Back in the 70s, we called that pointy nose the “beak” of the Thunderbird. Everyone did.

Man if I had that big Thunderbird I'd be roaching cars at the street light with that 429 thunderjet!!!

That color on the Thunderbird was not considered wild in the seventies. Bathroom fixtures, including tubs and tile, and household appliances were also commonly seen in mustardy colors like that, along with avocado green. It only looks "wild" to our eyes today, when the automotive color palette has been reduced so much.

My 1st car was a 73 gran torino sport and I also bought my mom's 79 tbird. I decided to trade them both for a 4or and my grandfather said...you ought to let me put that torino in storage for you. I didn't listen and still regret it today.

9:10 ummmmm excuse me, but 70,000 miles for a 49 year old car is rather low. That T-bird is GORGEOUS. It screams my style.

It feels like a bigger engine because the Cleveland essentially had big block heads, they were massive for a small block.

Love the T-bird!! The Torino was a lot nicer the year before when it didn’t have the “guard rail” front bumper. 72’s had a lot nicer front end even though the Starsky & Hutch front end was more common, I think they used that one for a couple years.

Holy hubcaps! The last time I think I ever took note of a '71 T-Bird was probably 1971, --Sorry about that. However, the '73 Gran Torino is one of my all time favorites. And yes, you guys should have worn bell bottoms. Ray Bans would have completed the look.

The reason that Thunderbird has a Pontiac looking front end is because Bunkie Knudson from Pontiac had come over to Ford for a couple of years and was the head designer.

The Gran Torino had bad visibility while backing up mine was a 1972 302 Windsor C4 transmission My father lived in Ocala The car had cancer so I painted it with Perry & Derrick oil based house paint the 70's were economically depressed

Hi, great interview. Love these early 70’s Fords, but I swear I’ve seen this interview before. Did you release this earlier, or am I thinking of Jay Leno’s channel? Now I’m confused, but either way excellent presentation.

I would totally disagree with the "Torino Guy"... my Uncle back in 1973 took a Gran Torino Sport with the 429/Automatic for a test drive with us in the back seat, and not only was it SCARY FAST it was VERY loud for a car right out of the showroom (for instance listening to the radio would be futile). He ended up buying a Galaxie 500 2-door instead, it was very quiet!!
