The gentleman wearing the war bonnet at the beginning I believe is Bob Johnson who used to ride Warpaint during Chiefs games. If any KC fans can confirm that would be awesome.
Why the NFL never capitalized on releasing the year by year GOTW seasons with their season recap films during the golden age of the home DVD market is beyond me. Or, Image the GOTW films with This Week In Pro Football/This is the NFL, etc highlights for seasons like these.
Who knows maybe they’ll clean this films up and do it in the future. But you’re right they, the NFL, should’ve done something along the lines of what you suggested. I would’ve bought them. Love these old NFL Films shows…the music. Love it.
My brother and I listened to this game live on the radio on a Sunday night when our dad was stationed in Germany. We had no live television games back then in Germany. Only armed forces radio at night. Games as good as this one I remember. I was ten. I also remember the Raiders and Chiefs games.
Pat Fischer was a little guy but he was tough and tenacious and could cut down guys twice his size - those years of gridiron glory had a price though. Today he spends his days in an assisted living faciliity, he has dementia and slow cognitive abilities and has to be assisted with simple things like bathing and brushing his teeth
The KC Municipal Stadium field was maintained by groundskeeper George Toma ("The God of Sod"). Toma came up with many innovations including putting the two teams' helmet logos on each team's 40-yard line. NFL Commissioner at that time Pete Rozelle was so impressed with Toma's work that he had him work on the Super Bowl fields in the 70s and 80s.
I probably watched this game but damn if I don’t remember it. I was 10 and had just moved to Newport News VA where everyone was a Redskins fan. I was just getting into following pro football and watched a lot of Redskin games at a friend of mine's house.
Billy Kilmer was one tough SOB, I don't think he ever wore a chin strap. He was one of those guys that was so tough, he probably wouldn't have worn a helmet if it wasn't against the rules
The KC Chief's name has nothing to do with Indians/indigenous people. The name Chief is related to former KC mayor Harold Roe Bartle who was instrumental in getting the Dallas Texans to move to KC in the early 1960s. Bartle was so respected in Missouri politics he was called "The Chief".
Ahhh the NFL’s 2 Native American mascots. Baseball has the Braves and Indians Hockey the Blackhawks No NBA ?? Warriors ? idk 🤷🏼♂️ Surprised that they haven’t gone after any others yet. Can you imagine?? The Kansas City Captains 🤣 The Atlanta.... Cowards ??
Team names have changed over the years. I like to categorize them. Animals, etc. How about professions/jobs? Packers, Steelers, Oilers, Cowboys, Padres, Senators, Kings. Weather phenomenon? Lightning, Thunder, Suns(?)
