I started collecting in the late 60's. When we moved in '73, my mother threw out all of my cards accept the box with my '71's in it. I was a little sad when I found out but I'm so grateful to this day that these cards were kept. I only have about 200 cards so I appreciate seeing alot of the ones I don't have. Thanks for the video.

Well I'm very glad to see that you're still collecting because I know that loosing cards can be traumatic especially knowing what we about which ones are valuable. You're a million percent correct that at the very least she saved the right ones. I got back into collecting full-time around 2010 but when I went looking back at some of the cards I know I owned I couldn't seem to find some of them. The one that sticks out to me the is my hockey Mario L. Rookie, which I still do not own to this day. I will find a way to own one soon enough I suppose. 1971 set is my all time favorite design and was a very special year as far as the hobby is concerned. I was 14 years old and was obsessed with baseball. I became a Yankee ballboy for after winning a trivia contest on the radio. I was to work 2 homestands, one in June and one in July. When i first arrived at Yankee Stadium to work my first game I was presented with a few gifts. Amoung them was my uniform, a signed ball and a wax box of 1971 cards. Those cards are still in my 71 set binder today and are still pack fresh condition. Though i didn't realize it for quite awhile this was the beginning of collecting baseball cards that continues to this day. I haven't looked at my 71 set for a very long time so thanks for bringing back some great memories.

That's an amazing story. What a great memory indeed. Being a ball boy must have been the coolest especially given some of the greats who were still roaming around the club at the time, but it seems each of us has a favorite set that has a lot more to do with a memory that those sets trigger for each of us. I think that, more than anything, is why I love this hobby so much. It's a picture history of the sports we love and to the memories they bring back. 👍

@@vintagesportscardfinds964 Yes, absolutely correct. No memories more important than our childhood memories. I think its a blessing that collecting cards as a child can still be enjoyed throughout our adult life. They still resonate and bring much joy. Baseball Cards are snapshots that trigger memories frozen in time. I'm now 66 and I enjoy building sets and adding to player collections as much as ever. Hopefully I will for another 20, 30 years. Enjoy the game and the hobby!!

@@vintagesportscardfinds964 A lot of times it's the very first set you collected. With me, it's 1968. I was only 6 years old, which is an early age to start collecting, but I had an older brother who was collecting, so I naturally fell into it. Not a favorite set with collectors, but because it was a favorite with me, many years ago I set about getting it complete, which is why I got the prized Nolan Ryan rookie (and a Johnny Bench rookie) when they were cheap. And by cheap I mean less than a dollar. 1971 has one card collecting memory for me. Among your group of collecting friends, there would be prestige in being the first one to buy a pack of that year's cards. No one knew what they would look like till then. In 1971 it was me. I still remember the first card I saw from that set when opening the pack-Jerry Davanon of St. Louis. Not a star player, but I still have that card, 52 years later.

I need so many of the high numbers for 72 that it'll probably be the last set I complete from the 1970s. I recently picked up some big cards for the 71 set and the guy I got them from said he had more 72s than he had 71s, but he had 18 cards I needed for 1971 and only four or five from the 72. Those high numbers from 1972 are a quest. Thanks so much for watching and supporting the channel 👍

@@vintagesportscardfinds964 For sure. I am doing the whole run. Shoot me an email if you are still looking to fill. I have several hundred usually at all times of any vintage year. I have completed the 71. Pain in the a#* Reggie centered was by far the longest card for me to find one that I liked in mid grade. Every set has some anomaly like cut and sheet placement or the whole series print run that was so poorly OC. Some so bad PSA and SGC are aware as it's prominent throughout the entire print run, similar to an UER uncorrected error card. 51 Bowman will get a pass for wax on back of card simply because of the 1 card per pack or other releases with 5 or less cards per pack. That means a large portion of the entire print run will have some wax on the back. You can wipe wax from a gloss paper card front, but the dull rear of a card will absorb that wax. So you will see nice mid grade cards with wax being able to get nice grades without the ST stain qualifier. Always subtle nuances within the hobby especially vintage. I am always up for trading as well so feel free to reach out if I can ever assist. I love set building, and even do the modern as well, just baseball. Nice video and keep up the good work 🇺🇲⚾️✌🏽

I noticed that you didn't mention Rich Allen on the Dodgers which is a SP and I would bet it will be one of your toughest find. The superstars you need should be easy to find , it's just do you want to pay the price. 71 Topps baseball are usually easy to find on EBAY, COMC, or your local card show, and I agree that in my opinion 1972 Topps baseball is tougher to complete than 71. One last thing, I love the backs of the 1971 OPC, the design on back is fabulous !
@vintagesportscardfinds964
@vintagesportscardfinds964 28 дней назад
Funny you should mention Allen because I recently acquired his card along with some of the other key cards including Ryan and Aaron in a purchase I made from the reviewer of the channel. I was able to pick up half of the cards I needed and some for the 1972 set. Although the 72's were not nearly as awesome. I think their is a video of the purchase on the channel. I agree with you the OPC cards for 71 are awesome. They are much better than the dull backs on the Topps version. Again, thanks so much for watching and all the insightful comments 👍

That Bert Blyleven card is one of my all-time favorites. Because it has one of the best backgrounds of old Yankee Stadium. I have it from my original purchase back in 1971. It's pretty low grade condition, because kids didn't take the best care of their cards back then. Mine would probably rate a 2 out of 10.

@@vintagesportscardfinds964 I remember when the 71 set came out. At first I didn't like it because I didn't like the backs. I don't know how much card collectors consider the backs of cards, but I think they're important. I always liked the cartoons and I also liked to have the complete career records of players. 1971 had neither of those. Plus it was the first set with the backs printed on grey stock instead of white, and I found them hard to read. The fronts were beautiful, though, and it had the added benefit of being the first set with action pictures, and some of those were great (Thurman Munson, Ken McMuillen, etc.) Now take the fronts from 71 and the backs from 1970 and you have a perfect card! (BTW, I do know that earlier card sets had grey stock backs. I have a lot of cards from 61 & 62, which are grey stock, but 71 was the first time they showed up on a current set when I was buying cards.I think from 63-70 they were all on white card stock.)
@vintagesportscardfinds964
@vintagesportscardfinds964 Год назад
@@RRaquello I consider the backs of cards very important as well for two of the main reasons you said. I also prefer career stats on the back for every year and the career and dark card stocks they make it hard to see the numbers are incredibly annoying when it comes to sorting cards.

About the Cubs team card, the Cubs around this time, at the end of Leo Durocher's time with the team, were known for having a lot of dissension and fighting and back-biting within the team, so it was a joke amongst us card collecting fans that the Cubs couldn't take a regular team picture because they couldn't get the whole team in one picture without them starting to fight with each other. That's not the real reason (I assume), but I remember that joke going around. I did notice that as you were going through the cards that you had both Frank Bakers. There were two different Frank Bakers in the AL at the time. One guy was white and the other was black. Both had short careers.

I do have some very nice mint condition Topps baseball 1971 cards but they're not superstars, what do you think would be a fair price in plastic and a nice top loader at a flea market?
@vintagesportscardfinds964
@vintagesportscardfinds964 6 месяцев назад
So to answer your question I just looked it up, if the cards are high number series, the prices seem to average 4-6 dollars a piece in ex plus and you might be able to get more if you are set up at a flea market selling them yourself. That seems to be the average price, so people might be reluctant to go more. If it's low series cards of common players, they tend to sell in lots of eBay in ex plus for 1.50 to 2 on average. Again selling them yourself you might be able to put them out for $2 a piece and somebody might take them. If you're selling to a dealer, then you can't expect to get less and that all depends on the individual dealer.
