interesting that Bench didn't argue it. Even though it was coming from a righty, it was clearly outside.

Reading about this play when I was younger they made it sound like Bench saw they were planning to walk him and then he just stood there bat on his shoulder and waited for the free pass but then looked as a fastball went by for Strike Three. Obviously NOT what happened...he doesn't even notice the Catcher calling for the pass and didn't swing at a WAY outside pitch.

0:11: No one likely remembers, but for some reason in the 1972 WS there was no limitation on the manager going to the mound as many times as he liked without the pitcher being removed from the game. Needless to say, this didn’t catch on.

I don't know who did it, but I had read (from Funky Facts cartoony baseball cards in the 70s) that a pitcher won a game without throwing a pitch (picked off a runner in a tie game, then his team won the game in the bottom of the inning).

That A's team was the best team in the last 50 years. They were brawlers too, if they were not fighting on the field, the were fighting in the locker room. To all you clowns who didn't like the play, you're all whiners. It was classic and this series was a classic too. A's were called underdogs but I don't think they ever were, they won 3 series in a row and probably would have won more if Chuck Finley didn't ruin baseball forever with the free agent thing. The rest is history. If MLB ever goes to a salary cap system, the A's organization would very quickly climb to the top, their system is loaded with talent, talent that they cannot hold on to because they cannot spend the money to keep them.

The A's had pitching (especially bullpen) and Reggie Jackson. A few better than average players. Other than pitchers, Reggie Jackson is the only Hall of Famer. In the 7 game series pitching matters. Rose, Morgan struggled against pitchers they had never seen before.

I was at this game and yes, Bench was fooled. It was a replay of something that happened in the Little League World Series a bit before the Big League World Series in 1972. We laughed our -- off when it happened. Could not believe the actors these A”s players turned out to be.
