Rollie Fingers helped redefine bullpen pitchers, and he did so in style, with his memorable mustache. Today we look at the origin of villains, the peak of the Oakland Athletics franchise, and the type of character teams need to put out fires.
Relevant Players: Catfish Hunter, Mudcat Grant, Vida Blue, Gene Tenace, Sal Bando, Reggie Jackson, Dick Williams, Johnny Bench, Pete Rose, Sparky Lyle, Goose Gossage, Willie Hernandez, Dennis Eckersley, Keith Hernandez

I remember the epic battles for both relief pitching and mustache supremacy between Rollie Fingers, Goose Gossage, and Dan Quisenberry, Bruce Sutter's mustache was kind of weak, so he achieved his facial hair awesomeness by going full beard. Three of the four are in Cooperstown, and if Quiz had lived to continue his broadcast career to keep him in the spotlight, there might have been a movement to put him in. Kirk Gibson, who himself had a nice one, was the great postseason mustache destroyer, hitting famous World Series homers off both Gossage and Eckersley.

Your commentator's dad sports a fantastic unwaxed mustache. I hope it didn't traumatized him thinking his dad is a villian. Great video Jake!

Thje fact that he was able to rack up 341 saves in an era where 30 saves was considered ELITE. When Rollie finished with 35 and 37 saves back-to-back in '77-'78 - those were absolutely staggering numbers for that era of baseball. It would be like a guy saving 70-75 games in a season today. Which is why Rollie won BOTH the Cy Young Award AND MVP honors during the short 1981 season - with 28 saves. A crazy amount given the era and the fact that he accomplished it in less than 2/3's of a season - AND he finished with a ridiculous (especially for a closer) 1.04 ERA. Rollie was a true all-time great and a trailblazer - and totally deserved of his plaque in Cooperstown. And honestly - that mustache is awesome enough to have it's OWN plaque in Cooperstown. EDIT - See - this is why I love your channel. Only an MiLBHatbilly vid can point you towards the realization that every single reliever who's won BOTH the Cy Young award AND MVP award ALL HAD AWESOME MUSTACHES!! The lesson here is that with great mustaches comes great relief pitching.

I would never expect to hear the word 'phenotype' used in a baseball video. You continue to impress!

A little too young to have ever seen Fingers pitch, only in the occasional This Week in Baseball highlight. But he was always easy to point out on a baseball card with that mustache.

Sparky Lyle came up with his mustache around the same time as Rollie Fingers. Lyle's was more the walrus type mustache than the villain type, but it was impressive nonetheless. That was before the Yankees instituted own their facial hair ban (Munson, Gossage, Chambliss, Jackson, Catfish, even the manager--Billy Martin). Mentioning the Brewers of that time, they were best known for their offense, but they had another villainous pitcher whose career might be worth looking into--mean Mike Caldwell.

Rollie Fingers is dope but I'm not a fan of relievers winning the Cy Young ever since Eric Gagne beat out my boy Jason Schmidt for the award in 2003. Still holding that grudge.

I could see the argument for both, I guess it comes down to whether you value overall workload, or workload in pressure situations. Thanks for the tip! You're the man!
