My husband has been watching your videos on our TV for a few years, so I often overhear your references to Pepper. I had asked him last week if Pepper was still around and he just showed me this video from yesterday. Please give that sweet old girl a great big hug from Newfoundland, Canada! 😊❤🐶
Had my mercury on the water yesterday after 6 years sitting and keeping up on it it's an 77 850 85hp on an 18ft deep v two and she still screams love those old mercs
Lucky you found a carb to rebuild. I had a 73 Merc 110 I put about 4000 hours on! I finally put it to rest but people were fighting to get at the parts, especially the lower unit. I had remote controls for it and I feel very certain that it was putting out more than 9.8 hp when I compared it to other outboards rated at 9.9. Great video! Made me want my motor back.
Mercury's Carl K. famously underrated their outboards until the new dyno testing rules were instated in 1984 or 1985. So all pre-'85 9.8's were putting out closer to 12hp
That's a sharp-looking little Merc and it runs nice. Nice job on that one. Good to see Pepper in the boat. Too bad you guys had to leave Tomahawk a day early this year. Sometimes, that's how things work out though. It was a great time as always.
Just got my 1968 lower unit back on, and finally figured out the secret to getting the shift shaft to actually go into the shift wrist when you’re lining the lower up. I feel like a god now that my shifter actually changes the gears. Only took 12 times of taking it on and off to figure it out lol Nice running motor bro, the cowl is immaculate compared to mine
I have the same year, just trying to get her ready for the season. Just did a fuel pump kit, and waiting for the carb kit, and hopefully it runs better than it did. That's a nice running motor!
Lovely motor in awesome condition. I’ve got the same one and have been putting some TLC into it to bring it back to life. It’s a shocker how much Mercury charges for every little plastic piece that wears and breaks with age! Listen, I’ve got a request if you are willing and able. My lifting mech is acting up and I’m not sure if I’m missing bits or not but the only way I can lift is to stick my hand in underneath to help things along with is a bit nerve-wracking. Think you could film a short video of simply lifting the motor (i.e. slanting it back all the way) and then putting it back vertical?
Ben's not really a black motor fan 😉, but we're winning him over, I think. Pepper digs 'em ☺️ Carl always underrated his hp. Those 9.8's always packed a punch. Merc always made sure you were the fastest guy on those 10-hp lakes 😁
Man, you always seem to get those old motors to humm. Do you make sure you carb is wide open at full throttle or is there another way. Mine still never sound like that. I have a 4, 7.5, 15, and a 20
I am currently working on a '72 mercury 110, has good spark, compression around 110 on both cylinders, carb has been cleaned. It won't fire, gas must not be getting to the cylinders, but how? Could reed valves be the problem, where are they in a motor like this?
Hello Chrysleroutboarddude, your collection is amazing. I have a question. I recently purchased a 9.9hp Evinrude b/c I loved them from my youth. I am looking to find a 15hp Carburetor to put on the 9.9. Do you (or anyone else reading), know the best way to find a johnson/evinrude 15hp carb to buy?
I just got an Evinrude 4 running And the motor has like a sort of a clanking noise in it at lower RPM. Is this anything to worry about? It runs really well otherwise.
Hey Ben. I have a 1954 Johnson 5.5 CD 11 and I can’t get it running it turns over and it has a spark. I would like to know if you know why. And if you want to see the motor just go over to my channel.
I got 89 8 hp runs but will not idle,it idles real high, nothini can with the screws will help it,but after I pull off the gas line and short time aftrer it runs awile it will idle right down and than die,got any ideas about this ?
