I got this motor with the Sea Nymph I used to have. I replaced the water pump impeller in 2016 and it last ran in 2018 when it was pickled for storage. this was the first lake ride with this motor since owning it. It is a nice runner.

I have that same exact motor, I bought it from a guy for $300 (couldn't run it for me), brought it to a small engine repair shop, had the carb cleaned out (didn't need it, just needed a pin) paid $60, worked great all summer, next season I brought it to a different guy (not my normal guy) had the lower end and water pumped replaced, paid about $800 for parts and labor, then brought it this year to my normal guy and had the fuel lines replaced and the carb cleaned out for $90. The motor was in such good condition when i got it, i take it to the shop every season for upgrade, three years working great it is still cheaper than buying a brand new outboard and having it serviced every year. I love this motor, very quiet, and pushes my 12ft 20mph across the lake, I get out of the hole and up to plain like a pro bass boat. Every person I showed the motor to, told me that I could have still made money on it even if it didn't work the first time around.

Thank you! I will continue to make these videos as long life's events allow me to. I don't plan to stop any time soon. My time to work on motors has been limited and will be at least for a few years. Hopefully I'll beget more time to do it after some other things are wrapped up. Thanks for watching!

My dad has an old jon boat that’s been sitting for well over 15 years now with one of these. The motors been stored inside luckily. Gonna try getting it running. He said he had it running at one point. Hopefully all the ignition parts are good and it just needs a carb rebuild at most!
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 4 месяца назад
Excellent! Good luck woth getting it back on the water. Hopefully it doesn't take too much to get it going. It's going to also need a water pump impeller at least. The one that's in it will have taken a set and be quite ineffective even if it isn't ready to break apart. Good little motors when things are in good condition. Thanks for watching!

@@aaronmiller8625 The most reliable way to get parts for Mercurys is by serial number. Mercury was notoriously bad about changing things mid year during production so just knowing the year is often not enough. Thus gets VERY tricky when Mercury motors get assembled out of parts that happen to.fit together. In your case that shouldn't be an issue, but Mercs have the potential to be very confusing depending on their past.

Yes, they are good runners when they run right. They're a little different and a little fussier than OMC in my opinion, but good strong motors. Thanks for watching!

I’m so glad I found your channel. I grew up cottaging on a lake in Ontario with Johnson, Evinrude, Mercury, and even Chrysler outboards. 18s, 9.8s, 9.9s, a 5 1/2 on a seaflea. Loved them all and loved the smell of a 2-stroke especially on a cool fall day. So you’re really taking me back here. My favourite was my 1975 9.8 Merc on a 12’ Nalco aluminum boat. I was 15 when we got that boat and motor and I was in love with everything about it. The sound of the engine (this 7.5 sounds a lot like it) and how fast it seemed compared to my friends’ OMC 9.9s. Were the Mercs really faster than the OMC motors or was mine just on a super light boat? I see that this Merc 7.5 is running about 2 to 2 1/2 mph faster than the Elgin you had out. Anyway, sorry for the rambling comment. Your videos are giving me a whole lot of enjoyment. Thank you!

I just bought the same engine and at the bottom in the front is a little gear lever that says 'troll' on it. Do you know how this feature works? Great vid by the way.
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 4 месяца назад
That lever is used to lock the motor into shallow water mode. It allows the motor to be used at low speed in very shallow water and not contact the bottom. Thanks for watching!

Hello there! I'm currently working on a 1975 Mercury 75 and I'm curious - where did you get your impeller kit? This one seems to pump similar amounts of water as yours, but I'm wondering if I should replace it 'just because.' (It's been sitting many years). I was looking into kits, but they all seem to be above 413XXXXX serial number, mine is 409XXXXX. Great video! Thank you!
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 6 месяцев назад
I bought my impeller kit from Marineengine.com by serial number. If it has been sitting that long, I would recommend replacing it. These are very small impellers and they take a pretty bad set rather quickly just sitting inside the housing. Thanks for watching!

At least those don’t have the phase maker ignition, correct?
@oldjohnnyrude8404

These are phase-maker. Thunderbolt is a phase maker ignition. I'm not a fan of that, but as long as they keep sparking they are good running motors. Thanks for watching!

I see these engines all the time on market place between 50-500 are they reliable? I’m thinking about getting one for my 10’ inflatable boat rated for 15hp but I think that’s over kill a bit lol so I was thinking a 7.5hp would be good 👍
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 Год назад
These are decent and reasonably reliable motors. I prefer the points ignition OMCs as they are easier and less expensive to repair than these motors. If your inflatable will.take 15hp a 7.5 would be OK. I'm pretty much a believer on maxing out rated HP though. You don't have to use all them at once.😉 Thanks for watching!

I have the same engine that just off on me and cannot get it to crank back up. What does the dial at the end of the handle do?
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 8 месяцев назад
The dial on the end of the tiller handle is the throttle friction adjustment. If your engine just abruptly quit, I would check for spark first. The Thunderbolt ignition will just stop working on occasion although they typically drop one cylinder first. They are also often affected by heat and will fail after the engine warms up before the system completely dies. They are unfortunately quite pricey to repair if they stop working. I hope you get it figured out. Thanks for watching!

I have the same motor and I'm having a problem lifting it out of the water. It locks down and won't lift back up. Anyone have any ideas? There's a bar in the back that it locks too. I hafto slide the bar out to get her to lift.
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 Год назад
If the gear shift is in forward gear, the reverse lock should disengage and allow the motor to be tilted up. If that doesn't do it, either the lock is messed up or the tilt bolt is too tight. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 Год назад
If yours is the same year as this one or later you should have the larger 3/8" bayonet fitting. The earlier, smaller ones are harder to find. Here is a link to the 3/8" tank side fitting. Mine runs good too, for about 10 minutes then it starts missing
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 Год назад
That sounds like you either have a coil or part of the stator failing. I would try replacing the coil on the plug that starts to miss after it warms up first, or swap the two coils uounhave and see if the miss follows the coil. If the miss follows the coil, the coil is bad. If not, itnis likely the stator failing. Thanks for watching!
