When you discover that your automatic shifter isn't shifting anymore. I found out that something broke inside my steering column. Lucky for me, I had a spare column on hand. This video is to show how simple it can be to replace an entire steering column in a 1977 Ford F-250.
This style column is commonly used through the 1973 to 1977 ford F series light duty trucks. I did try to keep it as simple and short as possible. But it still turned out a bit longer then I hoped.
Hopefully this is a helpful tool for someone who has one of these trucks and encounters this problem and is looking to do it yourself replace a steering column.

You remind me of my dad in that if he didn't have the tool he needed he invented another way to do it. After he got a welder, he would sometimes make what he needed. Too bad newer cars are not as easy to work on. Good wrenching.

I love the older cars and trucks to work on; everything if the years are right engine to transmission parts are the same. Back then a person all he needed to do was a little wire work to unbolting and bolting the engine and transmission. Even the brains for the vehicles are changeable from vehicle to vehicle. Not like computers today in vehicles, lol, I only do little work anymore on vehicles.

You're quite the handyman. We had an old 1970 Ford farm truck as a kid and the floorboards had rusted out in spots. You could lift up the mat and see the road zipping by. 🤣

That opening photo of this beautiful lady in this video, is badass. Keep wrenching on the old girl, and keep her going

From all the videos I’ve seen I was hoping you would show how you took off the shift linkage from the column. It’s the hardest part of it all

Sorry, thought I had that in there. If I remember correctly, I used a pair of pliers to push it through.

I have a 1990 Merc Grand Marquis LS that looks great still. The odomoter quit working like 15 yrs ago. I used to have a '98 F150 that had 220k + miles on it when I sold it. I was the original owner of that. I miss it. My car was my mom's. She quit driving so she gave it to me in 2007 as I was her caregiver....Also my bro did a penny fix on my washer control knob. New control part + install would have cost me like $350! He came over and took a penny drilled a hole in it to make a washer as one of the tabs that help keep the control knob in place was broken. He fastened the washer over the broken edge and it's good as new. A penny fix JR! We were dairy farmers so we also know how to fix things...Ford trucks are great! Here's the image of that penny fix scontent-msp1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/107501937_10222165764508466_3009249329362722620_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_sid=8024bb&_nc_ohc=FeXYXR3q9dIAX-SlbTi&_nc_ht=scontent-msp1-1.xx&oh=c0ef6dee001b7e81a59b1a392576a186&oe=5F2FB71E

What`s all them switches for in your truck ? and yeah I like watching people work on old stuff , I got a 1990 ford f150 XLT my dad got new and when he passed I got it . I want to do an EFI swap to carb ,
@rj78productions88
@rj78productions88 3 года назад
The switches are from when i was a firefighter and most of them operate the lightbar and other accessories in the truck that will eventually be moved over to the superduty i have now so i can start restoring blue.

What state are you in? Asking bc the donor xcab would be cool to have if you were willing to part with it and I could get a title.
@rj78productions88
@rj78productions88 3 года назад
Sadly, i did not get a title with the donor truck for the cab. And i am in South East Pa. About an hour north of Philadelphia. The only vin's on these cabs are on the door tag and the sticker on the B post. If you have a good title for your project, all you would have to do is put your Doors on it. I am working on an Email for the channel if you have further interest. Just let me know here and i will add it here once i get it set up. Thanks.

Hey man I have a 1977 f150 4x4, I had someone I shouldn’t have “rebuild” my steering column. Well I’m pretty sure he did something wrong or used the wrong parts because my turn signal is 1/2 inch away from my steering wheel to where every time I turn my wheel I hit the turn signal. Any idea on if there is a fix or if I’m better of buying a new one? Thanks
@rj78productions88
@rj78productions88 3 года назад
If you mean the turnsignal stalk is to close to the wheel, you could just bend it back away from the wheel, otherwise, pull the steering wheel and make sure everything was mounted back in properly.
@hastings6019

@@rj78productions88 Yes sir that’s what I mean, he did take apart a shaft off another truck to piece mine together, is it possible the inner shaft is shorter than my original making it closer to the steering wheel?
@rj78productions88
@rj78productions88 3 года назад
It could be. Ford did use many different style steering columns lengths and styles between years and 2 wheel vs. 4 wheel drive. I knew the the column i used in this video came out of another 77 F-250 with power steering. The column i removed came out of a 73 F-100 with power steering. You could try checking some junk yards to see if you can find another column to swap in.

Nice video RJ. Would you consider selling the mirrors off of the parts cab? I'd like to put a set on my 75 ranger XLT. Doc
@rj78productions88
@rj78productions88 2 года назад
If you mean the mirrors on the green and white cab, at this time I do not want to sell those mirrors as I do have plans on restoring that truck and getting it back on the road and would to keep the original mirrors with it. I only used the steering column out of this cab for now due to budget. But if I should come across a set of this style mirrors in my travels I will definitely keep you in mind and reach out to you should I come across a set for you. 😊

@@rj78productions88 please don't misunderstand me , all but two of the Rancheros were my dad's projects the 79 is my daily everything else is in various levels of completion. Yes I know how all ford parts are NOT interchangeable. Not a " better idea" FOMOCO we could have a Ford engine museum 239Y, 302,351M, 351W, 390FE, 400M, a few 85 Hp flatheads and a couple 60 Hp flatheads that my dad used in his hydroplane
