In all my time, it is the first time I have seen a steering wheel removed with a puller, the other way is more amusing, especially if they forget to leave the nut on.

Nice job. I did pretty much what you did but after I found the proper column for my truck. I didn’t have to replace the signal light switch though. Mine was in great shape surprisingly.

Even better the second time around. Hopefully the rest of your parts come in soon so we can see Part 2.

The steering wheel and skinny turn signal arm brings back some good memories, I can still feel them in my hands, the little click noise, pressing the horn in the right spot for it to work.

Column on my 1980 Chevy broke, due to pulling myself up on the steering wheel when getting in and out of the truck. The column can’t hold up to that kind of abuse and I learned that the hard way. I had to buy a special tool that depresses the plate at the top of the column so that you can remove the cir-clip that goes around the center shaft. A few years later, the truck got stolen and the locking steering wheel housing was destroyed by the goon who stole the truck. Not sure why he didn’t just use a slide hammer screwed into the lock tumbler like all of the kind the other low life thieves use.

It’s always neat watching you work on this truck. It’s like watching myself from an outside perspective. I literally have the exact same truck, same exact options and all.

I'll take a piece of string and tie it to the end of the old wiring harness when I pulled out so I can pull the new wiring harness back through. It makes it a lot easier.

Glad I watched this. Was rebuilding my column and very disappointed in the DC lower plastic part. Ordered the DRB. Do it once, do it right.

Making me remember but I would cut the switch off the harness tape the harness end to the new harness pins and pull the new harness through with the old . quicker.

Your 70 steering column looks like it was the carmine red maroon type color that was the red that was on the faded red and white 70 Ford F-250 my dad had back when I was in highschool

You maybe could have used a short piece of radiator hose to fit around that bearing and some super adhesive to keep it in place. The rubber all so serves as a vibration dampener The other thing is to run a bead of windshield neopreme allow to setup overnight. We used to repair hanger bearings when the rubber fell out just set it up in a jig pop in a new bearing remove all the old rubber shoot it full of neopreme let it setup and the thing was like new practically indestructible. As far as the rubber gasket a chunk of old innertube or mud flap or belting easily cut out. The only reason I say this is I have seen your ability to improvise many times. So, I know you are capable of fabricating pretty much anything. In any case I am sure you will figure it out and I really enjoy your videos.

I'd been wondering about a swap from the F100 parts truck...however you covered it, so... Never would've guessed a difference in those columns without the column shift until '73.

Hey just a suggestion..... Halfass Kustoms uses a wheelbarrow bearing and a li'l tack weld (I'd try peening over the edge of the bearing race) might be worth a try as parts seem to take forever to get to you\anywhere and or the evil "BACKORDERED" stock 🙄 Keep up the great content brotha!

Have you ever seen a half ton 4x4 bump side with a power steering box? I have a 72 F100 4x4 I would like to covert to power steering but it seems like a complicated process.

Yes, you can use a later '78 or '79 factory PS box. There's also Benchworks Power Steering systems out of AZ and also electric power steering systems from Steerman Cycle.

Hey backyard Alaskan, I wanted to ask if you run lead additives in your fuel, or is the cheap stuff fine? Just want to know if it’s necessary or not.
@BackyardAlaskan
@BackyardAlaskan Год назад
I try to run lead additive or marvel mystery oil in the old stuff. Definitely recommend one or the other. Thanks for watching!

If you loosen the steering wheel nut just leave a couple threads on sit in the seat grab the steering wheel with hands at 9&3 jerk hard fast jerks and the wheel will pop lose without a puller . Quicker but make sure the nut is still on at least 2 threads . Ask me how many times I've broken my nose pulling steering wheels but DON'T DONT NOT EVER PULL A AIRBAG STEERING WHEEL IN THIS MANNER EVEN A GUY THAT HAS BROKEN his nose more times than I can remember .
