The American journalist and creator of gonzo journalism spoke to Omnibus about the myth associated with his partially fictionalised alter ego, Raoul Duke. The apparent lack of a clear divide between the two had become a problem with Thompson who expresses his frustrations with the Omnibus crew and also speaks of the journalistic challenges associated with his fame.
This clip is from Omnibus: Fear and Loathing on the Road to Hollywood, originally broadcast on BBC One, Thursday 2 November, 1978.

What an amazing clip. He fully realized that the character he had created made it impossible for him to be the kind of journalist he most wanted to be.

Hunter is a great example of living his alter ego. Similar to guys like Alice Cooper and Andy Kaufman and many other entertainers, you turn into that character, you can get into some real hot waters.

Great reminder of how accurate Johnny Depp's performance & Gary Trudeau's 'Duke' Doonesbury characters were!

It's uncanny. I just down to read Fear & Loathing for the third or fourth time (it's my favorite book) and thought to check the channel first, and here this video is. It's just sad to hear him say that he has to end one character and begin another...then connect that with his suicide. It seemed to be a hint.

Yeah, he was hinting about killing himself 30 years later. Well spotted.

I think for people like hunter control over one’s end is critical, I think you’re right that it is a hint, 30 years prior to his suicide, and that hunter knew that his end would be his own choice.

It’s even sadder when you realize he lived all the rest of his life trying to be a character that he didn’t like to begin with and wasn’t really him.

His personality changes and becomes completely opposite his nature over the course of his career in direct connection to the popularity of Duke. Thompson was a quiet introvert who was brilliant as a young writer. He eventually becomes the exact opposite by the time he dies.

Benicio’s character, same as in the Vegas book is Dr. Gonzo who was based on the real life attorney, civil rights leader, author and politician Oscar Zeta Acosta, aka The Brown Buffalo, who disappeared in the summer of 1974. There is a documentary about Acosta called The Rise and Fall of The Brown Buffalo. He also wrote a book called The Autobiography of the Brown Buffalo.
