Think what Warren Moon did after this game. He went to the CFL and then in his ROOKIE season went on to win 5 STRAIGHT GREY CUPS. He went to the CFL and just won all those championships there.
This was literally my first game to watch as a little kid. Had no idea they were even going to this game called The Rose Bowl. Been bleeding Purple and Gold since that day. Go Dawgs!
Moon was too damn polished to be overlooked 👀 in the NFL 🏈 not to be drafted in the first round let alone not to be drafted at all at that time it was a joke for real.
As bad as that time was, it was better for Moon to play right away in the CFL than sit and never play in the NFL. The usual way a QB reached play status, was sit 3or 4 years then play. Knowing now that if he was drafted, he would sit 4 years then cut or traded due to racial bias. Ownership would not allow a black QB until Doug Williams forced eyes open.
Sure he played in a pro style offense and made great passes, but his skin was a little too dark for Madison Avenue Advertisers (Plus they already had OJ Simpson and Mean Joe Greene, can't have too many black football stars in commercials back then, gotta keep most of the sports for whitey)
@@laryjohnson5736 Youngblood is partially correct. But I also think that because this was Moon's only 'showcase' game it didn't help he beat Schembechler in the Rose Bowl. At the time the prevailing attitude was 'A little old lady could QB a victory over Schembechler in Pasadena'
@@karlzipp181, he's referring to the same game, the Orange Bowl for the '84 season, played in January '85. Agreed, one to be remembered: along with UW's dominant 4th quarter, the Sooner Schooner penalty and the blown chance for OU to possibly get a share of the National Championship, considering its credentials vs. those of the less tested BYU team.
Moon's 1st five years in pro football were unbelievable. As quarterback with the Edmonton Eskimos, he led the team to five straight Grey Cup titles (1978-82). Made Coach Hugh Campbell proud...& the city of Edmonton, AB. as well. It's a shame that the N.F.L. teams passed him up, but the Canadian Football League didn't. And yes, he did eventually get into the N.F.L., with great passing marks in Houston & Minnesota. Eventually went into both...I say 'both'...football Hall of Fames in Hamilton, ON. & Canton, OH. And, in the end, there shouldn't be any shame at all!!!
@@peterdoucet7974 Doug Flutie was not as lucky as Moon. Maybe if Flutie had been 1.90 then good luck would have given him a better chance in the NFL. The NFL and the United States discriminate against men who are under 1.70
I was at this game. We had stayed up all night to help with the floats for the parade in the morning. We parked on the golf coarse for the game. Traffic was brutal getting out so we just waited for it to clear. We were so tired we fell asleep and when woke up we were the only ones left.
The good old days. Sadly this matchup is unlikely to happen in a bowl game now in the new world of college (ahem- professional minor league NFL) football.
@@BigBlueBri Michigan football beat Washington & usc 1981& 1989;;; in the rosebowl;;; bo schembecher started having success in bowl games after indoor training building 1981 rosebowl
Washington , usc, ucla , oregan etc etc joining the big ten conference 2024,, we are friends now , pac ten conference a ghost conference 2024 & forever laugh, laugh,,
You've got to give the Hall of Famer his flowers, Warren Moon! The Huskies are going to win the National! Go Huskies, 2024, Natty, yo! But this 1978 Rose Bowl game should've been for the National! The Irish won the National that year. Warren Moon and Joe Montana, the GOAT'S!
That was the first time I heard of Warren Moon. Back then the only west coast games I saw were USC-Notre Dame and USC-UCLA. I never saw Washington until they showed up in the Rose Bowl.
Michigan beat Ohio State Texas A&M and Navy. Not bad. Wolverines would have had a shot at Natty if they won.Big win for Washington.Minnesota was inconsistent in late 70s early 80s
12-0. Back to back. Past 4 out of 6. 19 game win streak. I’m afraid it ends here though 😢. I just can’t see us beating this Oregon Ducks team. They’ve been way too dominate against common opponents. We lost something mid way through the season. Just not the same team anymore.
@@giomental Lol. 14-0, back to back to back and the past 5 out of 7 against Oregon, back to back against Texas, 21 game win streak, Maxwell award, coach of the year award, Joe Moore award, Heisman runner up, Biletnikoff finalist, Butkus finalist, Davey O’Brien finalist, but I’m afraid that it all ends here though 😢. You think this team is better than the 1991 Huskies? They beat their opponents by an average of over 30 points per game that season. And Miami, whom they shared the national title with, they clapped them in the very first game of the following season. That team had a 22 game win streak. Might be fate. To have the chance to tie that in the natty. And regardless of who we lose to the draft, we are beating Weber state, and Eastern Michigan. Those are the first two on the schedule, so we could break that record at 24 games. Never thought I’d live to see it.
Had a good stretch beating Washington in 81 Rose Bowl and UCLA in 81 Blue Bonnet. Victories in 86 Fiesta and 88 Rose were also memorable.Had some bad luck in big games not giving up a TD but still losing or getting tied. Arizona State's John Cooper said he didn't outcoach Bo in 87 Rose Bowl.Just had better team
