Rare footage from our 1979 pre-race build up footage which was the end of an era, Peter Brock's last year at Bathurst with the A9X two door Torana, he was simply uncatchable! Plus a tribute to Ivan Stibbard ARDC who garnered an impeccable reputation as the chief administrator of Australia's greatest motor race, the Bathurst 1000 with a rare interview with none other than . www.speedcafe.com/2014/01/21/v...

Many years ago I was a photographer at Bathurst for one of Brocky's last races there. I'd finished editing my shots and at about 9pm was packing my camera gear into the boot of my car. On hearing footsteps, I turned around and there was Brocky who had walked over to thank me for my efforts. We had a great chat for about 10 mins there, alone in that dark car park. Tragically not long after, he was gone. A real gentleman and an unimaginable loss to us all. I still have some unpublished shots of him behind the wheel. Cheers and thanks for this footage - Dave

Thing that sticks in my mind was the total dominance of the A9X that day, many other cars had blown engines and crashed out of the race in the very hot conditions, while all others were struggling just to get around the circuit Brock was killing it , he even set a lap record I think - maybe his final lap?. When most others were failing the A9X package was being pushed harder and harder by Brock and she never flinched once, the ultimate dominator on that day and incredible to watch and hear the performance!!.

2019 and the lap record is down to 2:03. But in all honesty, they are just cars built purely for racing, not road cars re-purposed like Brock drove. I couldn't go into a dealership and buy anything like the cars that race at Bathurst. The only resemblance today is the name...Ford or Holden, and even the Holdens are Chevy. According to Google, a V8 Supercar would cost you about $730,000.00. What did the Torana or Falcon cost? So technically the cars are better, but they have lost the fans that could go and buy the base of what raced.

By the way, the American commentator is Chris Economaki. He was well-known in the USA, and was brought across to Australia to internationalise the sound of the commentary. As a commentator, I think it was a one-time gig. He was very professional, but it didn't make much sense as he had a steep learning curve to get on top of our cars and drivers... and even the way Aussies talked about cars having bonnets and mudguards (not hoods and fenders).

The Moon is square excellent explanation. Thanks! One of the world’s great motorsports events. I preferred the old track with all it’s kinks, dips and irregularities, not practical anymore I suppose with ride height of modern cars. In the Group C touring car days, the race cars were for all intents and purposes very much hotted up road cars with a few added extras for safety such as the bolt in roll cages and bladders in the fuel tanks as well as other obvious differences such as slick tyres. But there were a number of the Group C Falcon's, Torana's and Commodore's that were actually converted to road cars after their life on the track. Not to mention that more than a few started their lives as actual road cars before hitting the track (Dick Johnson's 1980 Falcon rock car actually started life as a cop car in Maryborough before Dick bought it at auction earlier that year). Group C and Group A race cars were much closer to their road going versions than Supercars or V8 Supercars or whatever they want to call themselves ever were or will be.

Yeah, today's cars all look the same, I gave up watching Bathurst years ago. I remember when I moved down to the big smoke Brisbane from the Territory in 84, lived in Thorneside, on race day the street was divided, Ford versus Holden, meat pies copious amounts of beer, couple of the blokes removed the front seats out of their Holdens or Fords and sat right them in front of the tele, profanities and polite words of abuse were exchanged between rival houses through out the day, the looser's went into hiding for the next few days whilst the victors gloated but was all made up very soon over a few cartons after all there was always next years race. That was Australia, we've lost so much of our ridgy didge character.

What were those hub caps?

I think they were used to pull hot air out from under the guards, to keep the brakes cool. Brock used them for qualifying in 1979 and they were also fitted to the VC Commodore the following year, in some of the sprint races, from memory. Probably not used in the longer races because it would take longer to do a tyre change in a pitstop

just remember the fastest lap on the original track was done by a small 1.8L motor with a very small turbo…

Yep, a carburetor fed 308, with a fairly warm camshaft and better breathing.

The only problem with Brock who was at this time easily the best driver in the country was the huge amount of money his team had until tobacco sponsorship was stopped plus significant support from Holden at the time. He clearly had as much as most of the other teams put together. McLaughlin today is properly the equivalent of Brock was then. He always looked so relaxed in a car.

Funny that a guy known for unvarying perfection, lapping time after time like a machine, stuffed up a corner in a totally, utterly un-Brocklike fashion during his Hero lap. But got pole anyway...
