I have been watching this video on and off for a while. I'm still working on my 78 351M 4spd. This video gives me hope and I like the scenery and you shifting. Love it! Thanks
@@AlejandroP1980s All of those sound awesome. Just personal preference. I'm partial to late 70's Fords though. Probably the 77 F250 if I had to choose...but it would need to be V8, 4x4, manual trans.
Thanks for the video. I may be purchasing a '79 f150 2wd with a 302 and 4 speed this weekend. Hasn't run in 15 years but the guy said it ran when it was parked. So I just need to clean out the system. Its completely stock and very little rust.
Colorado, hell yeah! I'm going to swap one into my 56' Willys wagon behind a 302. Just wanted to see how the engine revs while driving. Thanks for the vid.
My dad used to have a 79 Ford truck but it only got 8 miles to the gallon then when I was born my dad bought a 1980 red Ford Explorer custom truck 4 x 4 four-speed manual transmission it’s top speed was 72 mph it was a very good truck we got 19 miles to the gallon I really miss riding in that truck.
Damn I wish I could get such a nice old truck in Germany, but they are insanely expensive over here.. With it’s 4x4 it would be the perfect vehicle to get hay etc. for my horses. Also the manual transmission makes it way more fun to drive, I’m jealous!
Hey man, I'm in the process of restoring a 78 F-250 with the 351m in it, watching you drive yours makes me extremely jealous! Lol, thanks for the video! Love your truck!
@@mcdlt8414 found out I had a kid on the way! Made the newer Ram a lot more reasonable choice to keep long term. I'll get another 70's Ford again, don't worry! I sold this one to a good dude in Wyoming, it's a daily driver up there now, so I was happy to see it go to a good home.
My first truck was my great grandpas f150 4x4 manual with a ford 300. It drove great even though everything worn out. Wish I had a 351 or even a 460, I've been looking for one in good shape and they're just really hard to find anymore.
My dad have drive this truck pickup before when he was 15 years old in 1993 he had his first truck my dad loved that truck but in 2005 he sold his truck and he was a great dad for me and i will get 21 years and get an job and i will give him that he's been wanting for such an long he loved that 1979 ford truck and i will give his surprise in 2028
@@OctaneElectrons i hope so the reason why he sold it because he didn't have any money so he sold it his story stayed barried for 15 years until my dad told his story
This truck definitely got some attention. It was a great driver. I like driving old stuff, and don't really bother listening to anyone who doesn't get that.
I have a 78 f-150 2WD with the T18 granny gear transmission. To me it’s a 3 speed since you usually start out in 2nd. It has the 300/6 in it and it is very reliable but gas mileage sucks at 10 pulling my mowing business trailer around. Nice video. PS- my truck is the same color, copper brown.
Thanks for posting this video! I just got a 81 f350, 351m 4 speed dually. Been looking for any videos on how these are suppose to drive, and what I can do to keep it running. Any advice on cold starting? Also, my trans seems fairly loud until I get to 4th. Drives wonderful though, sounds like it sat in a yard for awhile and was seized up. I will be skimming your channel for more truck content!
With the new carb on this truck, it just took one pump to set the choke, and it fired right up. Make sure your carb is in good shape and choke adjusted correctly. Not sure on trans sorry.
Please don’t think I’m picking on you here man but it just blows my mind that someone would need to be searching RU-vid to know how to drive a pickup with a four speed trans. I hope you had good luck with it
Look man I know everybody drives their truck different but I do have a couple tips that you should find helpful… #1 when you’re taking off in first gear “and second gear unless you’re hooked to a trailer or taking off uphill” there’s no need to give it any throttle to slip the clutch, just ease the clutch out and it will be take off just fine without stalling the engine and your clutch will last longer #2 please Please PLEASE come to a complete stop when shifting the transfer case, at lease when you’re shifting into low range, and also make sure you’re at a complete stop before shifting into first gear as it’s a very low ratio and nonsynchronized . #3 just a helpful tip… you don’t have to lock the hubs just to shift the transfer case around through the high range and low range, if you leave them unlocked and shift into low range that gives you two wheel drive low range and would have been much better on the truck for the demonstration you did on the pavement. Soft dirt and grass isn’t as hard on the running gear in four wheel drive but pavement really puts the running gear in a bind in four wheel drive, especially when you turn the steering wheel. Two wheel drive low range is great for backing up trailers and really just any time you want a lower gear than your normal first gear. …. Now I’ve always been more of a F350 kinda guy but even still I can’t even begin to tell you how jealous I am of your truck, it’s sharp as hell. Thanks for sharing the video
@@OctaneElectrons no you won’t generally have any problems while driving the vehicle, these are more or less just good driving habits for a vehicle you intend on driving for a long period of time. I learned most of my driving habits from my uncle and though I’ve never kept a vehicle long enough for it to matter I’ve bought ALoT of old Ford trucks that really made me wish the previous owners had been more mindful of their driving habits in. And folks may say that the things I said don’t really matter but the proof is in the pudding, the 86 F350 4x4 diesel that my uncle ordered brand new in 1985 still steers, stops, shifts and rides like it did when it pulled off of the dealership lot and it has been a work truck every single day since then. But anyway, this was a great video, thank you for sharing it with us
Man I'm 17 coming up 18 soon and I wish I had one like yours! My step brother has a 1990 dodge w250 he's been working on and it's coming good so far so I'm happy for him! Too bad going to college requires a car or truck with better gas mileage, also wont have the time to work on a project truck... ;(
Thinking of getting a 77 F250 super cab with the 460 in it and a 3 speed auto. No air conditioning but neither does my 04 F150 lol. Only difference I can see between my truck and the 77 I'm looking at is the lack of safety equipment on the 77 and the extra gear my truck has
I like the superduty truck for durability had f350 4x4 with diesel took a good beating and work horse I’ve had 65 , 70 , 79 ,89 , 92 all had issues but Brutt strength the 04 is my choice looks 65, 70 , 79
Awesome!! I'm looking to purchase a 79 f150 as a daily. It needs a clutch and carb. 1,800 . A little nervous to buy..what do you guys think. My commute is 45- 1hr. One way
Hey man, just got a 79, already has a aftermarket carburetor on it but cruising at medium speeds (40-60) it seems as if the trucks “Choking” as in it has no mmph haha. Was wondering if you had this problem/what carburetor you were running?
No this truck had a completely worn out carb that was impossible to tune to run smoothly, and a sticking choke. A new carb fixed that easily. Yours sounds like a fuel issue, maybe incorrect float level?
Years ago, I had a 79 F150 4X4. Mine was an automatic. I currently have a die cast model of a 79 F150 the same color as your truck. What is the technical name for that color? Or do you know?
Do you think a 4 speed 92 ranger would be a good truck to learn manual on? Have a chance to buy one in great condition. Never drove a stick before though
Really random question, I’m looking to pick one of these here in the U.K. soon but one thing has been on my mind, is there any way to adjust the seat/steering wheel/steering column? I’m 5’10 and I wonder how easy it would be to get in a comfortable driving position. Cheers!
I sold this truck awhile ago, but I believe the seat was adjustable forward/backwards. The steering column is not adjustable at all. This is was a Custom trimline, so pretty basic. Maybe some of the nicer trims had these features. However I'm about 5' 10" myself and was perfectly comfortable driving this truck.
Nice truck but for you're FYI the gauge cluster mask assembly is a 1978 model the overlay over the gauges,,the 79 had solid silver over the oil,,fuel,,temp and ammeter,,,just saying someone could have changed it out,,just trying to help ya but love it
How steep is your rear end? I have a 78 302 t18 and my math pins around a 4.10 rear end. I run 60 and turn 2500 so mine sees backroads a lot. Considering 3.00.
I'm currently thinking about whether I should get an automatic or a switch, with all-wheel drive. Do you have to shift a lot with 3 gears? I've been driving only automatic for about 20 years
Hi I thinking of purchasing the same truck and was hoping you could tell what rpm yours runs at in 4th gear? Can you run it on the freeway? At what speeds? Can you tell me your rear gearing? Thanks so much!
@@OctaneElectrons at 4000 rpm I bet. I have an 82 Bronco with a c6 and 3.73 gears and I turn 3600+ RPM just to do 65 with the auto, I don't daily it but I take it on the freeway fairly often.
Generally the early steering wheels you may have different spacing or indicator cancellation. But you can make any work within reason, my 78 has a wheel off my 59 fairlane.
@@socalltdThe last F/L/M to use a variant of that wheel was the E-Series van, through 1991. It was discontinued after that. The full-sized trucks discontinued that after 1986.
Have an 83 F150 6 cylinder with a 4-speed, engine runs great, but the clutch is on its last leg i believe, shakes like a bitch if you dont get the clutch and accelerator pedal action exactly right in first gear, all other gears are fine and shift nice, drive it every other week but would daily if i had the funds to run it with the gas prices here in Europe.
@@OctaneElectrons Not a huge lot of the older ones as in 90s and older but quite a few inbetween 2000 to 2010 year range, the 90s era trucks place is taken by the Chevies atleast around here where i live. Also, old american Ford trucks always come at a premium over here which i can only assume is because of Chevys stigma in europe and less old Fords being imported over
Why would that bug you? Where else do you put your foot? It's not like I'm riding the clutch, I just rest my foot lightly on top of the pedal. It's especially not an issue on a big truck with a heavy clutch like this one.
Octane & Electrons On the floor. And it does make a difference and I wouldn’t call that a big truck it’s a half ton. If the clutch moves when you “rest” your foot on it then it’s making a difference.
Jonny Simpson doesn’t make a difference with a cable clutch. Hydraulic clutch is a different story but they didn’t come around until 84. Cable clutch has about 2ish inches of free play
