Gifford was smooth but had a breathtaking propensity for error. Cosell was loveless but, unlike the jock announcers, would never sugarcoat the truth to protect a player’s feelings.
I begged my mother to let me stay up to finish watching this game! She used to let me watch the first half of the Monday night games and then go to bed but this one was my beloved Raiders!

@@OriginalOne1960 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 . How we start at the same time and we have more lombardis and more hall of famers than you guys?? Even Super Bowl appearances - smh- y’all got a lot of catching up to do.
I remember watching this game in my dorm room in college. I'm a Raider fanatic. Was so angry at the first half, but then it turned out so sweet. Thanks for posting a great memory for me.
Chargers WR Wes Chandler was on his way to a phenomenal season in 1982. Of course the strike wiped out 7 games for each team, but Chandler still went over 1,000 yards receiving. Chandler ended the season with a whopping 1,032 yards on 49 catches for an incredible 21.1 per catch average. And by the way, Chandler missed 1 game and thus played in only 8 games in 1982. 1,032 yards 9 TD in only 8 games!
I got to that game so late it was already 24-0, San Diego, when I got there. I was so sad seeing that scoreboard, but as the Raiders were rallying back, I was starting to get more and more excited, along with everyone else at the Los Angeles Coliseum. This was the Raiders first ever Monday Night Home Game at the Coliseum.
70's and 80's for sure...soon as the 90's hit it was over...too much bullshit , prima donnas, kneeling for the anthem, ect ect...i dont even watch it any more
@@notoriousbig6199 He was 3-6 in the playoffs and NONE OF HIS TEAMS ever reached the Super Bowl! His teams were very predictable AND very beatable, 14 seasons as a Head Coach and only 6 playoff seasons, he's right where he belongs!
People who impacted the game belong in the HOF. Coryell changed the way offense is played. Calling his offense "Predictable" contradicts all the voices from that time: Gifford, Cossell, Olson, Engberg, Brodie. Coryell was so innovative he changed the way DEFENSE is played. Hall of Fame.
This Channel is a blessing! Got yelled at constantly to turn the TV off. Would turn down the volume, contrast, and brightness anytime my Mom came to check to see if the TV was off and turn the contrast and brightness back up with no volume no matter who was playing.

It was brutal but better. It should still be like this This was right after the 82 labor dispute and LA just never warmed up to the NFL. Plus the stadium was massive. a 65k crowd could look small there
This was the first-ever regular season home game for the Raiders in Los Angeles. It also was the first game after the strike, and there was a lot of fan apathy that developed IMO as a result of the strike that IMO never went away.
This game was barred from broadcast on KABC-TV in LA, KESQ in Palm Springs, KBAK in Bakersfield (now CBS), and KEYT in Santa Barbara, since it was not sold out. However, the nearby San Diego ABC affiliate, KGTV, was compelled to broadcast the game as the Chargers were the road team. Thus, there were probably many in the LA area who tried to get a signal from KGTV to watch the game, in defiance of NFL rules. This would happen whenever the Raiders played a non-sold out home game against the Chargers on either NBC or ABC during their time in LA. In 1986, the NFL stopped giving the Raiders home night games, due to how bad the neighborhood around the Coliseum had become. Having the Raiders play night games at Anaheim Stadium, then used by the Rams, was considered out of the question.
Yeah even without Mike Haynes I thought this team was every bit as good as the 83 team..they finished 8-1 and the part of their schedule that was wiped out because of the strike was weak..they were also on a crazy sack pace through 9 games and may’ve set the record..getting picked off by the Jets in the second round with Miami(who we owned in the 80’s especially with Woodley at QB)who we would’ve destroyed in the AFC Championship at the Coliseum the following week..but just played way too sloppy in that Jets game..just a terrible loss because I think they would’ve won back to back 82/83
@@scottbuono2507 Much agreed, also, the 85 Raiders made the Playoffs for the 4th Year in a Rowe,...however, NE and Toni Eason (From IL), beat the Raiders by just 1 Touchdown!

With regard to Plunkett, many claim it's because of his unimpressive career passing statistics. But I've never bought that argument because (a) Joe Namath's career passer rating is a full two points *below* Plunkett's, and (b) Plunkett led his team to *two* Super Bowl victories, not just one. Plunkett simply wasn't the *media darling* that Namath was. (Nothing against Namath, just calling it like I see it.)
I hear ya brother, it's a crime, the first Mexican QB for the Raiders, The first Mexican coach to win two Super Bowls, Plunkett who is Mexican , the first to win two Super Bowls..
@@SingleTax Could be because Plunkett was a journeyman QB for his first nine years in the league, and I remember more than a few times Marc Wilson replacing him as a starter with the Raiders.
One thing about these old night games in multi purpose stadiums, was it always seemed like the field was poorly lit. Like they didn't always build them with either enough light or the light just was configured to light the field properly.
The Coliseum had the worst lights in the NFL by a mile. Even when the Rams moved back to LA a few years ago it was pretty dark on the field when they would play night games.
I love that Raiders-Chargers rivalry from '78 - '83. But it seems like the Raiders had the Chargers' number. The Raiders always won the big ones. Because they had offense and defense. The Chargers only had offense.
@@tonyarceneaux286 The funny thing is that in that time Bill Walsh up in SF seemed to have a knack for helping himself to SD and LA players. He shored up his defense with Big Hands Johnson, Fred Dean, as well as Hacksaw Reynolds and then scooped up Wendell Tyler from the Rams to bolster his running game. And the 9ers went on to win Super Bowls while both the Chargers and Rams languished as also-rans.

Dan Fouts was a Bucket Passing Master, meaning his best skill sets as a QB was the fact every pass he made was always on the money or in the bucket basket. But his true value was being an 80s QB whereas the last decade of real pro QBs being Tonka Tuff as this was the hardest aspect of a pro QB as of being tough minded leads to QBs who throw the ball away from being killed( Zach Wilson like QBs of college hype until getting killed in Pros due to being cowardly)
My new wife and I were up in Lake Tahoe and went to a casino to watch this great Monday night game. The house was with the Chargers, I bet on the Raiders and cashed in. Great memories!
I agree, but i think Tom Flores and his 2 rings as head coach 1 as asst. Coach, and 1 as back up qb should get him in too. Both these coaches although very different are excellent
If the Chargers had merely had a *mediocre* defense -- instead of one of the *worst in history* -- I'm sure Coryell would have been inducted twenty years ago.
The fun part about being a raiders fan in the 80s in Los Angeles was most of the games I ever saw on tv were road games thanks to the wonderful blackout rule (they could not sell out a playoff game verses Pittsburgh the next year)

Marcus Allen went to Lincoln High School in San Diego, Ca. I went to Kearney High, and I can still remember Marcus single handedly beating us in CIF finals, he played offence and defense. I think he scored playing both . lol
There have been three Monday Night Football 24-0 comebacks, all in the AFC West. This game, 1988 when the Raiders came back to beat the Broncos, and in 2012 when the Broncos came back to beat the Chargers...
LA was Always able to support two NFL teams...as long as they were winning. The Dodgers & the Lakers are the only teams that fans will come out for even when they are losing. There's too much to do in Los Angeles & ticket prices are too high to support a losing football team

The whole Charger franchise should be in the Hall of shame and blame, blowing 24 pt leads, fumblin, stumbling Chuck Muncie, how about last year collapse vs the toothless Jags, their playoff 24 pt lucky to win vs Miami, the list goes on and on.
@@wanderer34 Jefferson was easily replaced by Chandler in my opinion. Fred Dean was always complaining about money, he even held out from the 49ers in 1984.
Jeff Mitchell Chandler had the speed but Jefferson was the better WR overall. I feel had JJ stayed, we would’ve talked about him in much the same vein as Jerry Rice today. Chandler was very good but the spirit of the Chargers was JJ, and once he left, SD regressed into a pretender.
This is the Raider's first season in LA-the beginning of a love affair with the them by the gangs of LA. The Coliseum was never lit up appropriately for the area that it was in. (ghetto) Not only the inferior lighting for the playing field, but for the swaths of total darkness in many parts of the stadium, with fans petrified of the thug element that would breach the gates after halftime, and wreak havoc throughout the stadium. With the stadium being built in the 20's, naturally they set aside parking for the era's of the 20, 30' and 40's, which was woefully inadequate, as LA would become the biggest automobile market in the world. Because of such, much of the paying patrons for games, were forced into the surrounding ghetto to park, and needless to say, there was no shortage of crime upon them. It's to bad, as the Colisseum is a legendary venue, that of course hosted two editions of the summer Olympics, not to mention being the home field for the USC Trojans. Still, the whole are need to be lit up like the sun at night, replete with serious law enforcement patrols round the clock.

It was blacked out as would most Raider games. I suspect one reason the Raiders never drew well at the LA Coliseum was the fact their first home game (which THIS game was) came after the strike that year and the Lakers had already taken their foothold. LA has proven to be a Laker town first for 40 years now and the one city where the NBA trumps the NFL.
@@WaltGekko Given the fact that the "Mausoleum" had a capacity of about 93,000 in those days, even with big crowds that would normally fill a stadium, the Raiders couldn't get the sellout needed by the Thursday before the weekend to lift the black out the NFL required. It was tough for Raider fans. as we even had a couple playoff games blacked out (Jan 1, 1984 vs the Steelers and the following week versus the Seahawks on Jan 8th). Both games had over 90k in attendance but didn't sell out by the previous Thursday.
@@philliptesoro908 Al Davis was a fool to move there! He saw $$$, assuming they'd sell out the huge place. But he forgot that the Rams rarely sold out, so they put temporary seats in to shorten the field, and bring capacity down to 63,000. Even now, I think it's a stupid idea for L.A. to have two football and basketball teams.
I think the Chargers are the only team in NFL history to blow two 24-0 leads on Monday night football...Peyton Manning did that to them about 10 years ago...
The hypocrite Fouts constantly complained about the dirty Raiders, but the moment he turns into a defender, he spears a poor guy in the head after he’s down. I just lost all respect for the guy.

Why did the network producers keep televising plays from the endzone late in the second quarter? If they were doing it to be annoying, then mission accomplished.
Disagree. They should do the end zone views more often. It gives the viewer a chance to see the play develop and how it looks to the quarterback. One mans opinion.
Now I know why my Father watched MNF back then with the volume turned down. Howard Cosell was that reason.Wow is he annoying.I really dont know how Meredith and company could sit up there and listen to Howard diarrhea out of mouth for hours.Thsnx Dad, love ya, miss ya, but know I get it Dad.
@@rebeccawormell7832 Yet the Raiders still won because of Benirschke's miss. That was my point. But in fairness to him, if the Charger defense had simply done its job, it would never have come down to a missed field goal in the first place. In those days a high school football team could have moved the ball up and down the field against San Diego.
A very typical Coryell loss, whether as St. Louis' or San Diego's head coach. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. A game well in hand, lost because of stupid mistakes and lack of discipline. LOL!
