It's great to watch the 1980 Oakland Raiders winning games on RU-vid.

One thing about this game. Look at the date. December 1, 1980... Fast forward 7 days after.

Yup. 7 more days to live.

Red Miller should've been given another year. The fact he was able to coach the Broncos to an 8-8 season with a brutal schedule, massive injuries, unsettled QB situation. I guess the new owner, Edgar Kaiser, wanted his own guy.

I remember Tom Jackson saying, before this "must win" game for Denver, "If we don't go to the playoffs, neither do the Raiders". Denver was hoping to play spoiler.

Why the Broncos still had Morton at quarterback is beyond me. Joe Montana was still available in the 3rd round of the 1979 NFL draft. Denver passed him over in favor of defensive end, Bruce Radford. "Bruce who" you ask? Exactly!
@joegriego3091
@joegriego3091 5 лет назад
Morton went on to be the AFCs #1 rated passer in 1981. 1982, at the age of 40, his body finally broke down and he retired.

@@joegriego3091 I'm not saying the Broncos should have gotten rid of Morton, just that they were unbelievably foolish not to draft Montana when they had the chance.

SingleTax ......I agree Single but did anyone actually think at the time that Joe Montana would become “Joe Montana”? If that were the case not only would the Broncos be in the running for him but every NFL team would be.

SingleTax .....good point Single.....was a big fan of the orange crush but not Morton. I think they went to Super Bowl XII in spite of Morton.

@@SingleTax Are you spewing this nonsense on every classic game thread? Obviously no one knew what Montana would become. Even SF! He had too many check marks based on his college career which was very so-so compared to what he did in the pros. Not having a strong arm was one of them. Very doubtful he would have the career he had with anyone other than SF. But that's being guilty of following another of those never-ending "sports speculations." It is what it is, can't go back and change.

I notice the refs do not hesitate to call a play like they sometimes do today. No instant replay, no one to second guess them, so make the call and stick to it.

One week later would come the NE Patriots at the Miami Dolphins (8/12/80). This was the infamous game when Howard Cosell announced the death of John Lennon

Notice none of the players of that era would pound their chest after a 5 yard gain, a simple tackle? Today's players are all "look at me, it's all about me"! I'd rather watch reruns of old games than the crap today. F Vegas!!

Mark " Gasbag " Gastineau came from that era ( 1980 was his 2nd season ) and he was a pioneer of " Look at me, it's all about me "! Today's players have been convinced that they are entertainers and they think that sh!t is entertaining, Howie Long realigning his shoulder pads after he's blown apart an O-line opponent ( Tunch Ilkin ), sacked the QB or stopped a RB dead in his tracks was far more entertaining to watch!

1:50:42 - Chris Barh is lucky the Broncos sucked so bad on offense, because if the Raiders had lost this game, Al Davis may very well have gotten rid of him.

This could have been the very last game in Oakland in 1980.

No. Their last season in Oakland was 1981. Then they returned in 1995.
