Shirley Muldowney entered the 1980 season closer in third place in a four-way championship battle and overcame the odds to win her second of three NHRA Top Fuel crowns. Muldowney, the 1977 Top Fuel champ, trailed Gary Beck and Jeb Allen and was marginally ahead of Marvin Graham. Surprisingly, Allen failed to qualify, and after Muldowney beat low qualifier Graham in round one and Beck was upset in round two by Gary Cornwall, Muldowney needed only to beat Cornwall in the semifinals to clinch the title. She did that easily, then added the event trophy by besting Frank Bradley in the final.
