1981. Honda CB250N (B). Superdream. Ride out and random engine noise, or so I thought !

Honda CB250N. Superdream.
I took the bike out this afternoon for a run, and I have an intermittent engine (I think) noise. It's never done this before. I suspect the starter clutch, or possibly the bearing in the end of the clutch itself, although I would expect that to silence on pulling the clutch in. Please fast forward to the times in the description to hear the noise...otherwise it's quite a long video. Thank you for any fault suggestions before I pull it apart to have a look. ...UPDATE... I'm 99% sure it's the speedo head itself. I'll strip it, clean it and lightly lubricate it....watch this space...

UPDATE. It appears to be the speedo head itself as suggested by others....thank you. I'll strip it. clean and lightly lubricate it and see how it goes from there. Thanks to everyone that suggested this...much appreciated.

Yep, the speedo was the culprit. The only difficult bit of stripping it was removing the Bezel.....very careful not to break the glass. All nice and quiet again now. Thank you for your help.

Disconnect rev counter then lubricate leave and re connect geoff

It was the speedo internal bearings dry.....stripped, lubricated and put back together, all good then! 😊

Someone has suggested it might be the Speedo, so I'll disconnect the cable and try it again.

Mine was the actual Speedo head.... Disconnect the cable and see if it prevents it happening again. Good luck. 🤞🤞

Hey guys what's the exact fix? Do I take the clutch cover off and do something with the speedo head? I have this exact noise and problem and want to know exactly what needs to be done to prevent it doing it again

I took the speedo head off and carefully dismantled it. Very lightly lubricated the centre bush, and it was fine after that. I didn't need to do anything with the clutch cover. Go for a ride with the speedo cable disconnected, you'll know if it's the head then!

what size sprockets are you running, 15 at the front 41 at the back?

If I get chance later I'll check for you, but I remember checking when I got it that it was standard, so that could be right as I've not changed them. I might be selling the bike soon as I want an Enfield, although I might just keep it wrapped up in the back of my garage. 😊

Yes, 15/41. Had to check the front a few times as it's a bit awkward to see, thought I had 16 at first....

Good question, because I had originally 41/15 and I can't ride - because bike was too strong, to high RPM and so slow. Now I have 36/16 and is much more better - but I'm only solo driver...Cheers!
