- Running 93 Octane (w/ Sta-Bil and Seafoam as necessary) & Yamaha Yamalube Performance 2-Stroke Oil
I've included several photos of the moped the day I got it, and a couple more recent photos. After having finished working on this one, besides usual maintenance, I purchased a 1982 Honda Urban Express NU50 that I am currently restoring. I will be posting several video portions of the restoration progress.

Wow, what a walk down memory lane for me! I had the exact year, make, model and color. I think it cost $500 or so? I was 15 in 1981. I rode it to deliver newspapers, and of course just for fun. I can remember filling the tank with maybe $1 and riding all day. In the beginning I took very good care of it, but eventually was taking it trail riding with friends who had dirt-bikes. In the end it was in rough shape and I traded it to a kid for a guitar and amplifier. Great job, and thanks for sharing!

Adam, dude......that is such a nice example of the 1981. Great video and great job. It brings back so many memories for me and the irony is that I had a 1981 in 1997 while in 7th grade. My neighbor owned it, and I traded him a 20$ camping tent for it. Many of us in the neighborhood rode it and raced it, tried to wheelie it, abused it, off-roaded it, ran it without oil, ran it on a flat tire, jumped it, and truly put the bike through a torture test designed by children. The express always started even in the extreme cold, it never complained, and never disappointed. I rode the ever-living-shit out of the express....When I got older I realized what a blessing it was to have owned the thing. The 1981 model of the NC50 was truly one of the finest examples of Japanese engineering that Honda ever graced us with. The NC50 design was so minimalistic in size and proportion, but built with the metallurgy of all of the high end models of the day. The thing was indestructible. I will never forget looking down at the "Nippon Seki" brand speedo whilst hitting the powerband. Great stuff. Back then the huge draw to us was that these were quiet, did not piss off neighbors while riding the streets at 12-13-14 years old, and state law was only that you had to be 16 to (actually operate on the streets). No license, no insurance, no registration. A lot of that has changed now. (which makes sense) drunkies.

11:41 Gorgeous! I've had a 78 NC50 Since I was a little Kid as well. I was Today's Years Old when I learned they eventually changed over to Kick Start - Brilliant! (Although I've never had any mechanical issues with the Compression Start Ordeal. Because *HONDA* ) I'm happy to do without that "Auto-Choke" though. I actually bought an 80 or 81 from a kid who assumed the engine was seized as he didn't understand it wasn't a kick start. Then years later, I had forgot you needed a battery hooked up to complete the circuit & sold it to someone else for a rather absurd price (in my favor) who put a battery in it & it started right up so all parties were satisfied. LOL

Very nice restoration! I have a 78 with the stupid wind up foot start. Mine is more of a camping scooter for booking around campgrounds when we go. I'm actually looking at attempting a engine swap though because my oil system is messing up and it's running too lean. I wound up plugging the oiling system and pre mixing, but it doesn't run terribly good, and I don't want to invest $$ to get it back to stock form. Compared to mine, yours is in excellent condition. Looks great!!!

Great bike!!! I picked up the same moped from eastern Ohio last year. All the parts were on it for $500. Just had to charge the battery, clean the carb and choke. I wanted to know what type of tires and where you got them? Thanks in advance from Grosse Pointe. Just found the link to the tires in another comment.

How much did it cost you. To get it back in near perfect condition.looking forward to the next video 👍
@AdamKollipara
@AdamKollipara 6 лет назад
Roger St martin - Based on the condition it was in when I bought it, the total cost I've spent to get it back to stock (original parts can be a lot of $$$), do general repairs, and do extensitve repairs, is approximately $600. I bought it for about $180 on eBay 10 years back, so a total cost of under $800 over that span of time. I've seen '81 NC50s in slightly less of good condition as this sell for $1200+ a few times. Although I never plan to sell this, it assures me that I haven't spent "too much" on it. My only operating costs for it now are the 3-year registration sticker ($15), gas, and oil.

Every state has different laws. Michigan just needs a valid driver's license or moped permit and a 3-year moped registration sticker.

Good places are eBay for new/used parts, Amazon and BikeBandit.com (and the like) for new/universal small parts, and MopedArmy.com for repair help and new/used/hard-to-find parts.

@AdamKollipara
@AdamKollipara 6 лет назад
Yep 2.25×14 is the right size. Also replace the rim strips (14") that protect the tubes from rubbing against the spoke nipples and you should be all set! It's good to apply some motor oil or 2-cycle oil to the tube to prevent it from kinking and knotting during installation.
@melanieescobar1422

Adam Kollipara where do I buy that? The rim strips
@AdamKollipara
@AdamKollipara 6 лет назад
You can find the rims strips on eBay or Amazon. As long as they are 14", they will fit. I use IRC ones on all my mopeds.

Where did you get the air filter?
@AdamKollipara
@AdamKollipara 5 лет назад
The air filter itself can be found on eBay or Amazon. The airboxes & carb/oil pump covers are hard to come by and you have to keep a lookout on eBay or a moped forum, such as MopedArmy.com.

What's your top speed with it?
@AdamKollipara
@AdamKollipara 6 лет назад
william castle - It's completely stock, so it gets up to about 28mph. The stock exhaust restricts top speed, but provides good acceleration. When I bought this in 2008, it had a BiTurbo exhaust that reduced acceleration, but allowed the bike to breathe. With that pipe, it could get up to 33mph on flat road and near 45mph going down a steep hill (and that's also with everything else stock).

Where else can you find parts besides eBay and Amazon? I need a air box
@AdamKollipara
@AdamKollipara 6 лет назад
Eben Moreau - Airboxes and other miscellaneous plastic parts are no longer made nor available from Honda, so your best bet other than eBay is a moped forum such as MopedArmy.com or the "Honda Express Club" Facebook group.

Does this scoot have a 6 or 12 volt system?
@AdamKollipara
@AdamKollipara 6 лет назад
Whit Stearns - Originally it had a 6V system, but since this video I've converted it to a 12V. The battery and all bulbs I swapped for 12V. The rest of the electronics are apparently universal for 6V and 12V based on the voltage ratings stamped on them.
@whitstearns1
@whitstearns1 6 лет назад
All you changed to go to 12v was the battery and lightbulbs? That's incredible.
@AdamKollipara
@AdamKollipara 6 лет назад
Whit Stearns - Yes that was it! The only thing you need to do is make sure the 12V battery has the right connector on it (modify with a compatible connector if you need to) and make sure the 12V battery fits under the seat.

What kind of oil? I need to buy some and I'm not sure what to get
@AdamKollipara
@AdamKollipara 6 лет назад
I use Yamaha Yamalube Performance 2-Stroke Oil, but any Japanese brand oil will work (Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha). Japanese brand oil is a particular viscosity that works best in the Honda oil pump. For those that are bypassing the oil pump, you should still use Japanese brand oil since it runs best with the sassy Keihin carburetors. Also, don't confuse it with the transmission oil. For that, I use either Royal Purple ATF or engine oil, but any premium 30-weight engine oil will suffice.

You're lucky. I brought mine without knowing it has to have a title (mopeds don't have to have a title in Ohio... But since it doesn't have peddles they say it's a scooter, honestly I never knew all the laws before hand) So now I can't get plates and insurance so it's now just a back yard beater.
