1982 Falklands War: HMS Sheffield Hit By Exocet Missile | DCS WORLD Reenactment 

My uncle served on the Sheffield during the Falklands. He was lucky to escape without any physical injury apart from some burns, but he sadly suffered terrible mental damage from what he experienced. He went from an eager young man eager to serve his country, to a shell of his former self.When he finally returned back to the uk he was never really the same. I really enjoy all the content you guys produce even though I don’t play DCS, but I found this one fairly emotional to watch. Thank you to Cap and the rest of the team.

My American compatriots upset at all the sandtable videos against U.S. carrier groups don't seem to be aware of the fact the host is conducting historical sandtables against British vessels and fleets as well. History, especially war history, is fascinating. Thanks for doing these. Interesting to get a feel for the event, through simulation.

I've actually interviewed the bloke that shot the Exocet that sunk the Sheffield, and this is quite literally what he told us. It was taking off, going in in complete radio silence, popping up every now and then, "launching the fish & gtfo".

Im new to all your videos, I don't play DCS but being from a military family I find them on the whole entertaining, This one however was a hard one for me to watch, My brother served on HMS Sheffield during the Falklands war. It wasn't until the day (some weeks following the sinking of the ship) we headed off to Brize Norton for the ships companies return that we found out he was alive, and not as we had been informed dead, as a young lad, I don't think I have ever seen so much emotion, upset, grief and despair, followed by tears of joy and relief for the lucky families who got to see their loved ones walk of the steps of the plane, all in one place. It was seeing my older brother stood there, in ill fitting bits of uniform that he had been given by crews of ships that picked them up after abandoning ship (given to him because his had been burnt off of him, including his boots that melted to the white hot decks while they tried desperately to fight the many fires that had broken out}, that it truly sank in he was coming home. My brother tried to be his jokey self with me, but even as a young teenager I could tell something wasn't right with him, and growing up in a small family home, and having to share a room with my brother, the screams and shouting coming from his nightmare filled nights I will never forget. Still none of this deterred me, and in a few short years I joined the Royal Navy myself, I served for 10 years, and did my bit in the straights of Hurmuz during the late 80's and then again during the 1st Gulf War. I don't think our mum slept much from the 80's onwards! Pleased to say we are both still going strong. but to bring things back into focus, the crew of HMS Sheffield had only 3 seconds notice of the impact from the time the missile was visually sighted, they only just managed to get the "Brace Brace Brace" announcement out over the ships tannoy system as it struck. the ships own Electronic Warfare equipment was unable to detect the Exocet, as the India band was effectively being jammed by its own satellite communications system, a hard lesson for us to learn. Just wanted to share that with you, and whilst I as many others have enjoyed the video, I will always remember and respect those souls that are still on a silent patrol off the shores of the Falkland islands, who will never come home. Thanks.

The assymetrical load out was due to two factors: the Argentinians didn't have many Exocets, I believe a total of 8 in inventory. One per plane they maximized the chances of one hitting. The second factor was due to the fact the Exocet were very heavy, this they needed something heavy on the other wing to balance it out during takeoff. Better carry fuel than another bomb to those really long distances.

With no CIWS, no Sea Wolf, the ship was at the mercy of a next generation weapon. If memory serves they didn't see the Exocet until the last 30 seconds. Very sad.

maybe when the Mirage F1 gets released, someone would mod the Super etendard over that, as both had the same cockpit in real life

Remember that they wer fliying very low (8 mts form sea level) for not being detected by the special radar of the Seffield (remember that sheffield was spewcialized in air defense with a high power radar). To avoid this, the Argentine Navy practiced with oour own type 42 frigates, developing a method called "pecking the lobe". They just flight as high as the ship radar lobe (limited by the curve of the earth) permitted. Ijn certain instances, they nedded to go a litle upper to update telemetry info for the misile. The studies for calculating the lobe range was also made with an University in Argentina. Morover, remember that we only received 5 exocets without codes, and we developed here the system talking between plane and misile. Finally, Have you heard of ITB (AKA inslatacion de tiro berreta) developed by the Argentine Navy to launch naval exocet from land??

The report of the board of inquiry into the loss of the Sheffield, which declassified in 2017 reveals the full reasons why the ship was completely unprepared for the attack. The board found that two officers were guilty of negligence, but they escaped courts martial and did not face disciplinary action, apparently in order to avoid undermining the euphoria that gripped much of the UK at the end of the war. Marked “Secret - UK Eyes Bravo”, the full, uncensored report shows: Some members of the crew were “bored and a little frustrated by inactivity” and the ship was “not fully prepared” for an attack. The anti-air warfare officer had left the ship’s operations room and was having a coffee in the wardroom when the Argentinian navy launched the attack, while his assistant had left “to visit the heads” (relieve himself). The radar on board the ship that could have detected incoming Super Étendard fighter aircraft had been blanked out by a transmission being made to another vessel. When a nearby ship, HMS Glasgow, did spot the approaching aircraft, the principal warfare officer in the Sheffield’s ops room failed to react, “partly through inexperience, but more importantly from inadequacy”. The anti-air warfare officer was recalled to the ops room, but did not believe the Sheffield was within range of Argentina’s Super Étendard aircraft that carried the missiles. When the incoming missiles came into view, officers on the bridge were “mesmerised” by the sight and did not broadcast a warning to the ship’s company. While the ship’s company were aware of the threat posed by Exocet missiles, some appear to have thought the Sheffield was beyond the range of the Super Étendard aircraft, because they were unaware the planes could refuel in mid-air. Nobody called the captain. His ship did not go to “action stations”, did not fire off any clouds of chaff in an attempt to deflect the Exocets, and did not turn towards the incoming missiles in order to narrow the Sheffield’s profile. Moreover, some of the ship’s weapons were unloaded and unmanned, and no attempt was made to shoot down the incoming missiles.

Historically, Exocet missiles had horrific warhead fusing that almost never worked, meaning that warheads almost never exploded, and the attack on HMS Sheffield was no different. The Exocets tended to do their damage by the kinetic effects of punching through ship hulls, and the dispersion and explosion of their unburned missile fuel. It’s a weird aspect of the Exocet’s usage in combat.

The Sheffield was attacked on May the 1st... not the 4th ! This is why there are so many unexplained events. The day of the attack was concealed by the Royal Navy. The Sheffield was impacted by bombs from Argentine Air Force Mirage V planes... at 15.30 hs. aprox.

The thing about the Sheffield was the light weight alloy superstructure. It burned like Grantham Towers. Very bright and very hot.

I don't remember clearly, they said in a documentary that Exoset needed also a data link pod something but I don't recall if it was on the other wing, or placed in the airplane... so was it the pod or the tank?

Hi sorry for my bad english but great reconstruction. The Frenchs engineers didnt "link" the plane and the missile and go away because cant help Argentina so arg engineers did that. It didnt work very well the missile didnt explode but the speed and remaining fuel were enough to do the fatal damage .

very nice vid... as a supernerd i have to point out some minimal mistakes: 1) That's an extremely Hot Rio Grande base considering it is located at Tierra del Fuego island and the historical date was mid autum XD 2) As you pointed, both SUE carried AM-39 with them, but no Matra Magic, In their AM-39 configuration the SUE had to remove cannons in order to accomodate electronics for the missile director, also needed to carry a big fuel tank to compensate the weight of the missile at takeoff, and couldn't carry AA missiles, since it was at the verge of max payload already, so correct loadout ingame should be 1 AM-39 + 1 large external fuel tank, no AA missiles and No cannon usage allowed. 3) Too bad CK-130 has USAF sprite and not the correct FAA sprite 4) pilots only exposed themselves above deck for a sweep, then they went back to the lowest altitude possible, and at last they would do the launch, breaking contact at minimum altitude. This was to avoid Sea Dart missile, a very capable missile for the time, that could only be countered by flying under radar. 5) According to british intelligence revealed decades later, both missiles were launched and also both missiles hit HMS Sheffield. Same goes for Attlantic Conveyor... 2 missiles were used on each strike and the last one was used in the controvertial attack on HMS Invincible

Actually the Exocet didnt explode it went straight through the ship but started a fire within the hull..the Frigate succumbed to fire damage under tow..

If you look up what was going on on-board the Sheffield leading up to and during this attack you will be like "What the fak?!"
